Building the DIY Plywood Aquarium - Just How Big Is It?

  • Today, I'm starting my biggest project yet - building my giant DIY plywood aquarium! In the video, I walkthrough the current state of the basement aquariums, the reasons for building this tank rather than buying, and get to work by picking up the stand materials, and ultimately - revealing how big this tank is going to be!
This is my first time building a plywood aquarium, and I'm bound to make small mistakes along the way. If you're looking for a true "how to" video, I'd look up some of the Fishtubers who have more experience with these builds. I'm confident that this tank will all work out fine, but just wanted to throw out that caveat. Let's get to building the plywood tank!
Below are Amazon affiliate links to all of the materials I used in this plywood aquarium build. I'll keep an ongoing list here and throughout the series:
    - Pond Shield (Black): amzn.to/4b6QzYm
    - Pond Shield (Sky Blue): amzn.to/48Xbb3s
    - Fiberglass Resin: amzn.to/3u2AUbX
    - Fiberglass Mat: amzn.to/492RE1x
    - Wood Screws - 3 inch: amzn.to/47Seyrk
    - Wood Screws - 2.5 inch: amzn.to/496QJx3
    - Wood Screws - 1 inch: amzn.to/47Qq8mK
    - Wood Glue: amzn.to/3OfVsob
    - Sander: amzn.to/3OihjLH
    - Sand Discs (60 Grit): amzn.to/4bd1tvR
    - Paint Roller Kit: amzn.to/3OeTfcy
    - Paint Brushes: amzn.to/42flPk2
    - Silicone: amzn.to/3SjsOnw
    - Latex Gloves: amzn.to/4b3GTxX
    Plywood/Lumber (so far):
    - 3/4in 5-Ply Birch Plywood: x3
    - 2x4: x12
    - 2x6: x10
    Tools used/eventually needed:
    - Miter Saw: amzn.to/47HVn3u
    - Power Drill: amzn.to/47P35c0
    - Corner Clamps: amzn.to/4b3HeAJ

Hey Troy, this is looking like a thing of beauty already. The sump fits so well, great job measuring and designing. I love Joey and Tamara, he is always building. Rambo is such an amazing co-star all the time. I am so excited for the future of this tank build, I keep wondering if there will be a big ass window? That would be so sweet. No matter, keep up the fabulous work and I'll be watching. Love from Ontario.

Hi, looks good for your first build, I noticed some of your screws haven't counter sunk. Use two drills, one with a smaller wooden drill bit to pilot your holes for your wood screws, then another hi impact screw gun to drive them in under the surface of the wood.
It's not a criticism. it will make it easier with so many screws.
Also using a pilot holes will stop your wood splitting when driving your screws in.
You're always so tidy with your presentation. Your tanks look awesome

    Troy,
Awesome tank build i am going to have to look it up and can you tell us the cost after it is finished. I also would keep in your mind that electrical box and water. Fish splash and you don't want water to hit the panel and cause a fire or shortage. That should be considered before being moved next to it. I can't wait to see this process get finished. I am curious on how do you see the fish with plywood..

  • @harshtruth9148
    @harshtruth9148 6 місяців тому

let me suggest that where your stand legs are screwed into the base board use a 90 degree angle bracket to assure it will not crack or hold......when you screw in on a 45 degree like you did there's a chance it could snap. I would run 90 degree brackets bottom and top of where the supports meet the base and top, it will add so much strength to the structure.

    • @CichlidBros

  • @philliphart6327

I applaud you and like the channel but see a potential issue you might encounter in a couple years in that your vertical support is not underneath the the upper frame. In time, weight will sag to the vertical supports and put the frame downward, screws and all. Then the tank would be only supported on a few points, multiplying the force and possibly collapsing the whole tank. Sorry to be a downer. I do woodworking as an advanced hobbyist so I may be wrong but when I mess with any tank over 200 gallons, I am getting steel frames and just building the cabinets around it.
