Looks great, that! The character affected by the crack and the now ties really sets it off.
Nice project, and good use of a block of oak. Here's a few ideas:
1. If you had a few powerful bar clamps you could have tried closing the split up a bit before fitting the bow ties. Then, when you released the clamps, the oak would have put the ties under tension, holding them tightly and precluding further movement.
2. An easier way to drill at the desired angle is just to set up a bevel (or chunk of cardboard cut at the desired angle) on the underside of the block and keep drill parallel to it.
3. If your going to be using the block outside, it's better NOT to trim the feet so they set down flat. Better to leave them cut straight across so the corners dig in and keep the legs from splaying any further.
Chopping wood is very therapeutic, but you really can't beat a chilled beer! Nice work again!

Beautiful work Matt, I really like the appearance of the bow ties. I recall something on an American channel and they called them butterfly joints, joining floorboards perhaps to repair a gap? Love watching your cool headed approach to problem solving. I'm never likely to be a carpenter but love watching others working with wood.

I have a big oak log as a chopping block. When it started to split I took the sap wood out with a long 20mm sds bit (such as plumbers use for going through walls) then glued in a length of dowel rod. It relieved the stress in the growth rings and the log stopped splitting.

Instead of using table saw to square up the end, try using router sled

Hey, I have that same knife, along with the wider-bladed one and I love their steel. The best carving knife I've used, though, is the hollow-ground Flexcut... OMG.

Nice but I'd have to skip the legs. Splitting wood ful-tilt with a felling axe needs a low, strong and stable base... You don't want that blade meeting your feet.
Hi Matt, if you need an adaptor for the router dust collection, I'd happily 3D print and and stick it in the post. I can make virtually any size, square or round section
