Kevin, I was a carpenter and we always mixed the saw dust and glu t o gether before we put it in a crack then stuff in and it looked great. We usually done it on oak or walnut trim. High dollar stuff, but you done a great job! and they look great!

I have 5 slabs drying right now and have thought about doing the same with them. The only thing I would do different is fill the cracks before first treatment of oil. They really do look great. Be proud of your work.

Probably you should've glue them first before applying the butcher oil..

Don't they have to dry for some time before sealing the wood? Anyone please comment.

Great job Kevin. Custom made cutting boards, each being unique. I bet there's a market for them.

Hi. Nice job. Walnut is a good wood to engrave. It is hard, because it is a slow growing tree and the grain is so close together, but will allow you to do the things you did with minimum effort. That is why rifles and shotguns traditionally had their stocks made of walnut. The checkering on them are easily done and stands up to rough usage. Also, don`t know about Gorilla Glue, but Tite Bond food grade carpenter`s glue is FDA approved and once it is cured it will last outdoors for decades. I use it in my bird house projects. Joe

Those are really nice end grain cutting boards. End grain is the best because it is the easiest on knives. Nice job.

WOW ! I pay around $ 15 per lineal foot for 1x6 as it has to be brought in. We do have birch up here and I have a big 48 in circular sawmill so it's almost free. Maple and oak are avail south of me near the border with you folk.Aside from that we have plenty of fir, pine, spruce, aspen and cottonwood. That piece will be a great board for your son bud. I am envious eh. I know of a few food safe oils but I just use olive oil.

@@Robinson-Homestead Just find someone with a portable bandsaw to come and do it on site. My circular has a 3/8 kerf. These little/big saws just take an 1/8 kerf with little cleanup/loss.. Big time losses in what is valuable one in boards. Many of them will saw for a portion of the wood sawn. I am drooling just thinking about it.

I have to cut down a black walnut I planted decades ago as it's 7/8 dead now. The base where it flares has big main roots coming off and the most amazing grain you can imagine. I'm hoping to get the best cutting board from it with just my chainsaw and sanding like you did.

Beautiful finished product. Some observations: To prevent cracking, Chinese chefs traditionally soak the boards in salt water for 2 to 3 days. And after drying, drench the boards with hot cooking oil to seal the wood.
Easier to premix the wood dust with the glue before applying them with a scapel. Good job.

@@Robinson-Homestead You don't want to use cooking oil. While it's a good oil for temporary use, over time the oil does go bad inside the board and then you've pretty much wasted your wood. You want to use food grade mineral oil(not mineral spirits) for a few coats, and then you can use mineral oil with wax, and polish it.

Beautiful wood. I believe the oil was stained too darkly. And I agree that you should have applied the glue before the oil. Check out "Next Level Carpentry" who has a Christmas Video on using CA Glue. He uses CA Glue for sealing and stopping cracks. And yes, "Next Level Carpentry" also uses beeswax and for other surfaces he uses rub-on "Masters Gel Polyurethane".

No judgement here at all. I’m just wondering if that butcher block sealer is actually food safe. My understanding has been that only butcher block or mineral oils should be used because vegetable or olive oil will go rancid. Also, will oil penetrate sealed wood? Not criticizing whatsoever, just curious. Love your videos Kevin, Thank you.

    • @TheWoodHaven

Hi K Uvodich, That Watco Butcher Block sealer that Kevin used says right on the can that it is safe for food contact. It's nearly impossible to see, but it's right on the front label. The mineral oil he used was also food grade. Beeswax is another good choice. Everything Kevin used to seal that cutting board was food safe. One thing I've learned about Kevin is he does his research.

To show the grain really nice in the camera. Squirt a mist of water. Sealer should be any of the three listed: Olive Oil, Cooking Oil, Linseed Oil. They will leave a natural color, not to dark.

Fantastic Workmanship! I definitely will make some of these for Christmas Gifts. I might just wood burn a pattern on some or the initial of the family. You have inspired me to salvage some of the wood my husband cuts for our furnace, from our bush. Already ordered the Butcher Block Walrus Oil and Wax from Amazon. Thank you for this excellent tutorial.
