Cousin Mam Binta my mama never measured any ingredients either. This video also helps me to appreciate the wood burning stoves I saw in other peoples homes. They may have taken some of us Afurakans out of Afuraka but they weren't able to take all of the Afurakan out of us Afurakans in amerikkka. These videos are so much appreciated because I personally feel that they show the real Gambia as opposed to the commercial romanticized versions I see on youtube. Thank you cousin Mam Binta and Sister Marie. Trench...

@@africandiaries Sister Marie, thank you for sending her my message. I am keeping my fingers crossed. She is a natural cook and teacher. I can tell cooking is a passion of hers.
I found my love for baking in gambia and i learned a lot about improvising for the many tools or ingredients you dont have at your disposal . I think it made me a better baker because necessity is the mother of invention and all bakers need to be creative and inventive
Don't rush your food. If you want it right then let it cook. I love how you keep it real. I know I have a lot to learn but after that I would take it to the next level. There is always so much to do and so little time.
Hi Ladies, thats a wonderful style of Baking which i will call (WATER STEAM BAKING) I think this style of Baking is much more better than the Electrical Baking in the oven, because in that it can get Burnt, but in your style, it can never get Burnt. So congrats for your new style of Baking, and i think it will taste Nice for sure. Thanks.
Yes, exactly - it can never get burnt... so we didn't rush the baking at all lol ! It did taste good, Mam Binta is very creative in her baking lol! Thank you so much for your comment
That must be a very nice cake. I can imagine the taste. It also would be a very nice cake with pineapple, or mango. Next time i'm in Gambia i'll gonna search for that cake
Thank you for sharing. Use baking powder instead of using bicarbonate of soda. Bicarbonate of soda is too strong and can make your cakes bitter. There is not need to cover the pot with the cloth, the lid alone is enough. I did a similar video showing how to steam cakes a white ago. If you have foil or some baking paper you can cover your cake tin and tie it with string first before you put it in the pot. You could also use sand like someone suggested.
Bicarbonate of soda is fine, just be careful and not add too much. A splash of lemon juice will make it the same as baking powder 👍🏾 Excellent job you did 🙌 The flour and milk etc is called a batter as opposed to dough.
@@africandiaries @mahawa diaby this is same as on the video just instead of water use sand, I explain 🥰 : sift sand before, put it into cooking pot and lets heat, put pan with cake batter inside on heat sand and cover like that on video... you can use any sand ... voilà 😀 that’s it and hope i am clear ... much love to you 💕
I think the word you could not think of was ‘batter’ in English. Cake batter. But what you made looks more like what is called banana bread in the U.S.
You two are truly amazing, you gives us hope for young Gambian women. And Marie is very generous with her channel. Well done girls. I'm coming for a piece of that tasty looking cake.🙂

Have you ever tried to turn the big pot upside down and put the pan of dough under the big pot? Or does this recipe require steam?
Hmmm no we haven't tried that!
Well the method is basically steaming
@@africandiaries I think it would cook much quicker without the steam, and probably will taste better without all the moisture.

This is Africa, not the west. No need to be obsessed about hygiene. I have never had a bad stomach from food in Gambia 😊
