At this year's Goodwood festival of Speed Yamaha showcased the XSR900 DB40 prototype. and many people including me think that this might be the upcoming R9.
They could do both, an R9 and XSR900 because they would share the same engine. I think a retro sports bike would do well in the EU and the UK, but not in Amerika.
A more telling harbinger would be changes in geometry. If the geometry of the chassis and suspension are the same then it is just a naked with a pretty face. If the geometry changes then we may be on to something legitimate.
Geometry isn't going to change. Rake and trail are pretty much set with the existing MT09 chassis and the swingarm is clearly the longer one off the XSR900/Tracer9, so the wheelbase will almost certainly be the same. That being said, the MT/XSR chassis is already very capable and given a front wheel-oriented riding position and higher-end suspension components, could be a very capable sportbike. Remember, naked bikes used to just be crashed sport bikes without fairings.
