There are so many things I love about this fight. The pacing, music, humor are all fantastic, and of course this is probably the movie's single most important fight, in terms of power scaling the fight between Ip Man and the General at the end of the film, but the thing I love the most is the sheer physical presence the actor who plays Master Jin exudes. Every time he resets for another go, you can just feel his determination to win as opposed to him telling us with the types of over exaggerated facial expressions that can sometimes creep into a fight.
All true. It's beautiful and creative and energetic in the choreography, with excellent pacing and visual sensibility. The Master Jin actor conveys the unwillingness to admit defeat, constantly rising from the latest defeat to try again until he finally concedes that he's overmatched. Even then, he's grudging about admitting defeat, attributing it to style instead of the masterful character of his opponent who knows style is less important than inner strength and skill. The scene has playful moments mixed with exciting martial arts action, like a Jackie Chan scene but with more substance to the creativity.

Fun fact about Wing Chun: When Master Jin called Wing Chun a “woman’s martial art,” he was referring to the founders of Wing Chun, who were both women. Some legends say one of the two lived in a Shaolin temple for a while, and when she discovered that the second founder was about to be forced into marriage with a local warlord, she adapted the Shaolin arts into something more suitable for women, in order to help the second lady fend off the warlord’s sexual advances. In fact, if I remember correctly, the “creator” of the two was called Yong Chun in Mandarin, or Wing Chun in Cantonese
@@asoka7752 It is true as what Taco said. I think this exaggerated role of the Ip Man is incredible. Not getting hit, or rarely getting hit. In a quick martial arts fight you don't always predict all the moves even more in different fighting styles.
Donnie's Ip Man movies are incredibly well made. That goes double for the first one. It's too bad they don't showcase Donnie Yen's abilities as a martial artist. While that may sound paradoxical to some, but you should've seen the man back in the 1980's: the stuff he did (and the quality, sharpness he did it with) - was both borderline unbelievable. Not to mention his signature: the spectacular showdowns against the fellow martial artist Michael Wood. Watch "In the Line of Duty 4", - Donnie's best work and one of the very best martial arts movies ever made. There is nothing like that today. P.S. Same re Fan Siu Wong. Watch "Death Games" (1997).
From what my perspective, you can see Ip Man does a gracefully fighting pose while Master Jin does a wildly fighting pose. It's pure, self defense fighting style vs brute strength fighting style. But in the end, Ip Man not just beat him but he humiliated his opponent with a simple object, a feather duster.
Wow I heard ppl say that the Ip man movies was real good but dam this was pure sick moves I think I need to get a hold of these movies because this fight scene was honestly good forget that is fake it's still awesome to watch how they position their moves, this makes me feel like I want to learn how to fight like that👍
You should totally get the whole franchise. However, do note that the films tend to exaggerate a lot of the plot lines to a certain extent. @Meta Man Having watched this film recently I realised how ip man beat the northerner and why the other Kung fu masters lost to the invader. Those masters spent the majority of their time and energy in their students which means they had less time to perfect or tweak their own skills and conditioning. At this point in the film, ip man is still a private master and does not have any students under his regime. He self-trains within the confines of his home. Having dedicated much of his time to the art he has become bored and is secretly seeking out a challenge. Notice before this fight he’d invite certain respected masters to his abode for a spar at his own convenience. On the other hand, the northerner forcefully entered ip mans home without permission demanding a fight from the great master. It’s with this effect that ip man graciously accepts the challenge and allows himself to express his unique distinction with the art. After handing his ass to him, ip man humbly tells the northerner that the reason for his defeat was because of his ego, his mindset. Not down to skills alone. “A wise king never seeks out war but must always be ready for it.”
That totalitarian smirk Sifu Ip Man has on his face @3:26 before the stunning blow.... Priceless!!!! Of course, then you have that legendary beatdown of Fan Siu-Wong.... Donnie Yen is a living legend for a reason....

@@cristeaadrian7419 💯 agree. Need to make it easy on yourself
I think this exaggerated role of the Ip Man is incredible. Not getting hit, or rarely getting hit. In a quick martial arts fight you don't always predict all the moves even more in different fighting styles.
0:11 Jin's buddy is Dennis To, who portrayed Ip Man in The Legend is Born, and also Cheng Wai-Kei (the young man who fought Leung) in Ip Man 2
the most underrated comment
The Fact that i love how the wife was like "just beat em already" lol
*1:45** Correction: *He says; **_"Watch your mouth."_*
But then again, the overall translation is a mess.
1:50 ip man: prepare for the pain
Donnie's Ip Man movies are incredibly well made. That goes double for the first one. It's too bad they don't showcase
Donnie Yen's abilities as a martial artist. While that may sound paradoxical to some, but you should've seen the man
back in the 1980's: the stuff he did (and the quality, sharpness he did it with) - was both borderline unbelievable. Not to
mention his signature: the spectacular showdowns against the fellow martial artist Michael Wood. Watch "In the Line
of Duty 4", - Donnie's best work and one of the very best martial arts movies ever made. There is nothing like that today.
P.S. Same re Fan Siu Wong. Watch "Death Games" (1997).
**Pummels the bejesus out of Jin**
"Are you alright?"
Now that's discipline.
Brilliant scene on every level. The added humiliation of getting his bum smacked like a child in front of his students just made it for me.
Which is to us Asians...the almighty belt.
@@redblade5556 that's only Arab bro
Ip man was a legend person and backbone of martial world
“Ill pay” had me laughing the whole fight
3:22 This is how my mom used them belt/ sandal on me back when i was a kid 😆
i guess she knows wing chun back then
Nah, its 3:52
Wow I heard ppl say that the Ip man movies was real good but dam this was pure sick moves I think I need to get a hold of these movies because this fight scene was honestly good forget that is fake it's still awesome to watch how they position their moves, this makes me feel like I want to learn how to fight like that👍
You should totally get the whole franchise. However, do note that the films tend to exaggerate a lot of the plot lines to a certain extent. So if you're Caucasian, please do not get offended, they didn't mean it in such a way, it's just a portrayal of characteristics of different racial stereotypes from the past. Have a blast mate!
@@ErdingerLi It's all good I'm very tough to get tilted anyways and I'm more interested in knowing his story and what he had to go through because I remember my grandfather saying that he was the best martial arts fighter and that he helped maintain the honor of the chinese in numerous occasions. He also said that he had one of the best combination strikes and that he was flawlessly fast at it when he was young in his prime. If only I had Netflix to watch them lol.
@@christopaci70 sounds like your gramps' a man of culture mate
@@ErdingerLi Oh trust me he was, he will always sit down with me and talk about all the great sports players that used too play and many past history too. I would always listen without a clue because I was too little to understand everything but I always would hear him out about the past world wars and other stuff. He also said that there wouldn't be another one like the great Bill Russell he would always tell me that no one can beat the championship run like he had and I kinda agree with him. He didn't know much about martial arts until he knew about the Ip man Wing Chung movement and he felt in love with it. He is just a very proud man when it comes to his timeline history I guess 😂🤷🏻♂️
@@christopaci70 that's amazing. Thanks for sharing such wonderful moments 👍🏻
I like how ip man slowly transitioned from defense to offense
"The problem does not lie within your style. It lies within you."

Whenever he folds his sleve it's like time to attack
Yeah your best bet is to attack while he's folding his sleeves 😛
@Meta Man You really spam the same comment everywhere :)
@Meta Man
IP Man 1 is such a masterpiece
Asian parents after seeing you get a bad grade: 2:58
That totalitarian smirk Sifu Ip Man has on his face @3:26 before the stunning blow.... Priceless!!!! Of course, then you have that legendary beatdown of Fan Siu-Wong.... Donnie Yen is a living legend for a reason....
Fan Siu-Wong rubbing his butt at @4:02 is the true testament that you don't mess with the bull.... 😝😝😝😝😝😝
Watching IP Man clips i was constantly wondering, why does music remind me of Gundam 00? Then i checked the credits. Sure enough, Kenji Kawai scored all the Ip Man films.
I love his works!!!! Other than Ip Man series he did many HK movies scores as well.❤️
the slow-mo cut to just hitting the ground like a sack of potatoes at 2:21 is such a good edit
without a doubt one of my favourite scenes in this movie
"I'll pay"
"Yeah, you will"
Ip man suble dominance 🤣
"Upon the hands of a master, a sword's most important feature is not the sharpness nor the weight, it's the master."
I still come back to this years later and say damn he beat the brakes off that dude.
lmao; @ 1:07, what Donnie Yen's character actually says is, "Good."
The subtitles completely make up extra attitude, "Yeah you will!"
The battle with Fan Sui Wong is the first and best battle ever orchestrated in the IP Man movies.
Это можно смотреть бесконечно!!!
Бесподобно!!!
No disrespect to the movie, but his kid coming in at 1:30 and Ip Man doing a little salsa at 2:14 made me giggle. The feather duster whooping was just the cherry on top for this scene
I actually enjoy watching Sui-Wong Fan's style more than I do watching Ip man's style...but ultimately Ip man's less fanciful/more economical style is more effective (to win)...
I love the excitement.
This movie is a masterpiece.
English subtitle: I'll pay!
Asian: I'll pay!
Ip Man, "Skill issue, get good scrub."
When he rolled up his sleeve, then you will know he is in serious mode 😊
John Wick: Pencil
Ip man: Duster
Jackie Chan: anything
Fan Siu-Wong, from his stance and his aggressive fighting style, reminds me so much of Feng Wei from Tekken.
Same. They fight like they’re trying to punch your head off.
That's when Ip Man Gets serious! 💪
Jin fights dirty 2:39
Then defeated with a feather duster
