I rewatched this film recently and saw this scene in a new light. Initially, I had the attitude of "well these jerks deserve it for starting a fight." But Jen really is very naive about the jianghu. She flaunts the Green Destiny sword openly. When those martial men see it, they come over to find out what connection she has with Li Mu Bai. She boasts that she defeated him. Either she's a lying thief who stole his sword, or she's a true enemy of his. So maybe they challenged her because they are friends of Li Mu Bai, or maybe they challenged her because they wanted to become more famous by defeating someone so strong, or maybe they wanted to trounce a lowly thief. But her bragging caused this misunderstanding. Even when they attack, they are careful to explain to her they are attacking. They do ask for a match with her. At no point does she ever display any courtesy or respect towards them. Just based on her age, she should be a little respectful of a senior martial artist. Even if she is stronger. Her rudeness escalates the situation and turns potential friends into enemies. During the fight, she spouts poetry about how great she is and continues to insult her foes. The degree of offense she causes ensures bad feeling. If her intent wasn't to kill them all, then she had to know that this poor behavior would create a rift between herself and others. Their intent in challenging her may have been good or evil, but how she responds reveals her extreme naivete. When she runs crying to Michelle Yeoh's character, Michelle tries to explain this to her, but she still fails to understand.
It's the subject of the movie, she represent the young people who wants to be the best in a short time, without any moral. And this path send you to death.

Something lost in translation at 3:47. She did not refer to herself as a godess, but a xian, which is an immortal being beyond all worldly matters, including gender. This is echoed near the end of the poem when she vows to defeat Eu-mei (a female-only monestary) and Wudang (a male-only monastery).

Beautiful piece of comedy right there.
I think it's supposed to show the moment she realised he was wearing an iron bracer. It's not that she's hurt necessarily, it's more like that strike was more solid and painful than it should have been. So the next thing she does is rip off his sleeve, and expose him as a fraud.
Fantastic! Loved it! As a former martial artist there were some very clever little tidbits in the sword fighting. One where she breaks all of the ringlets on the other persons sword. That is supposed to be like the Grandmaster sword with the ringlets that will catch the blade of an attacking sword, but she just sliced through the ringlets making that sword more useless. It was just a blip in the scene but a clever detail for anyone who knows the different weapons. Actually it was a pretty neat display of a variety of weapons of the time. I appreciated the authenticity of that aspect. Very well done fight scene, even though of course in reality you would be hard pressed to find someone who really had those skills, but in the mythology of course they do exist, and perhaps even at some point in time they did in reality as well. After I saw my Grandmaster astral project one time I started to believe some of the mythology just might actually be true! 😊😊👍👍😉😉

It's the wire work that helps make this crap movie very pathetic. The action choreography also makes it pretty much crap as a movie...... my nickname for this smelly turd...Crouching Crap, Hidden Shit And yes, I love Kung Fu movies. I've watched HUNDREDS... When Bruce Lee died, HK, China, Taiwan and several other countries cranked out HUNDREDS and hundreds of Kung fu movies..to find his replacement The Jose Theater, in San Jose CA, would show 3 for $1....and changing them regularly....I virtually lived in that movie theater. Even mixed with violence the poetry in movement is enchanting and filled with calm. We would be lured in a swordfight and end on our back just smelling the aroma of the thea and wondering what happened. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" won 4 Academy Awards (2000) and was remarkably directed by Ang Lee... who also directed many diverse movies... staged in China, England, USA.

Those who gave Oscar to this movie are stupid.
He make too many white ppl movies anyway.
lol Gou trying to turn slowly after he realizes he pissed the champ cracks me every time
0:29 why did you have to cover the subtitles
He said something about the wine being in the other restaurant and she told him to get it I think… can’t rlly remember
Funniest scene of any Kung fu film. She really makes me laugh - and the final Kata is just awesome.
Did she really say “I leave no trace” with a straight face as she destroys that inn??
🤣😂
that's exactly what I was thinking
To be fair, it was mostly the other fellas who wrecked the place xD
Haha solid point!
@@gregoryf9299 Another thing I've reacted to during all the years since I first saw the movie in this scen, is the guy at 2:31. I have loads of questions regarding his weapon, it looks like a damn calculator haha! What's he going to do? Bore her to death with numbers?? :D
Absolutely mind blown by this sequence, wow! Zhang Ziyi totally blew the roof with this performance!
0:29 The waiter says, that's some food I gotta go to the other restaurant to get she responds, "Then hurry up"
Pretty bad when we need a third party to tell us what's being said instead of being able to read the subtitles due to incompetence.
Thanks for the translation! Really appreciate it.
If I had to translate it into English:
"Boss, this is going to take awhile. It's stuff that's only available from the large restaurant."
"Better get going then."
@@bellgrand Thanks. Appreciate the assistance.
@@bellgrand I feel my translation was way more accurate.
Incredible balance, flexibility and skill. So many actresses can pretend to be tough but they lack the grace and fluidity of Zhang. She is convincing when she fights; love it.
She was an professional dancer before she was an actor. I guess that’s why.
@@LadytheKingsmother Yup, I definitely think so!
I remember having the super resolution DVD of this when it first became available....This deserves a 4k HDR 10 remaster if it doesn't already.
This scene is a tribute to Cheng Pei Pei who played Jade Fox in this movie. She was a star of wuxia movies in the 1960s which typically had restaurant scenes like this one.
this always happens to me when I order tea at Starbucks. They told me not to return.
You too?!
Wow, I'm not the only one? I don't feel so lonely any more...
😆😆😆
Maybe your last name is Gou
I feel as long as you tip well, it's okay.
This is a perfect movie. Pure art. Pure mythology. Wonderful.
I agree.
This channel's subscribe advertisement is annoying. It blocked a good chunk of the subtitles. Not all of us are fluent in Chinese
Give it a dislike.
You cannot help but fall in Love with her and Michelle in this great movie!
Fact.
The way that guy sits down in the chair around the one minute mark is how I'm going to sit from now on.
Every time I watch this scene, that one guy using an Abacus as a weapon just cracks me up. He repeatedly jumps into the fray only to get swept aside instantly every time!
His abacus is actually very lethal🧮 😂
I have very much same feelings seeing my boss entering the canteen when I am just enjoying my coffee during a ten-minute break.
I love it when Ziyi is playing the role of an aggressive woman. 😍
I love how irreverent and rude she is, it makes it hilarious! "Southern Duck? Who can remember such long-winded names!" hahaha
I saw the movie in Honolulu when it was released. I loved it. Michelle Yeoh is a goddess. And Zhang Ziyi is hot. ❤️❤️
Michelle Yeoh's motorcycle stunt in Supercop is astonishing.
This was what China used to be like before communism. People used to be able to fly life was good.

One of the best scenes in Chinese moviemaking history....No offense to Yeoh but only Ziyi could've pulled this off because of her youthful innocence and classical dance training

Quick grab your weapons a master has arrived
That one guy: *grabs an abacus*
He's the town undertaker counting profits.
He's reliable; you can count on him.
Beautiful, I've forgotten the elegance and beauty powering this.
I always rewind this scene over and over again and played slo motion on the DVD back in the day it is such a masterpiece epic scene.

one of my favorite movies. I always have a box of tissues at hand
That forehead slap is fantastic. They did a really good job of the sound effects in this film.
I love how Gou sort of realizes he made a mistake and just tries to turn away. Like it's going to be that easy.
I'm surprised I had to scroll down this far to see a comment about this. It's actually hilarious how she takes offense of their long-winded names (and his especially) and informs him he will be the first to feel the blade, and his comedic reaction is like, oh shit, maybe I should've kept my mouth shut. Beautiful piece of comedy right there.
This will always be one of my favorite movies of all time.
this is one of the greatest movies ever made
Love this scene, the fighting, the stunts, the dialogue, the flute music in the background. Brilliant!
Love how your logo is so huge that it covers the subtitles. Ugh.
The best martial arts director ever.
I love that little wrist flick she does at 1:58 *and* I appreciate them showing how that would really hurt if you're not trained right.
I think it's supposed to show the moment she realised he was wearing an iron bracer. It's not that she's hurt necessarily, it's more like that strike was more solid and painful than it should have been.
So the next thing she does is rip off his sleeve, and expose him as a fraud.
@@Flangel66 well actually no some martial arts include accessory pieces like hung gar kung fu iron rings
Fantastic!
Camera work is better than many modern movies.
The guy at the end trying to sneak out always cracks me up.
Those days were awesome when gravity didn't exist... damn Sir Isacc Newton had to ruin it all.
HAHAHA
Yeah I tried to do a quick hop and spin in place really fast and that did not propel me smoothly 30 feet into the air. I just felt really dizzy after and fell over.
Yoda: my cane you hold
This movie totally needs a sequel. One of the best combinations of great choreography, great acting, beautiful cinematography, and engaging storylines. I know there was a 'sequel' but it was phony because it wasn't connected to Ang Lee and didn't have the incomparable Zhang Ziyi.
Everytime she spins up to the second floor I get goosebumps!!
Seen this movie many times, never gets old
It’s a pity Zhang Ziyi never conquered Hollywood the way it seemed she was going to. She was such a beauty.
I think she is happy.
she got eaten out at the great wall and settled
@@nickclark18 ?
I believe she wanted to stay clear of Harvey Weinstein.
Just like another beautiful woman, Annabella Sciorra wished she would have.
Hollywood is over-rated. She had a lucky escape.
She’s my favorite artist . I love to watch all her movies !!!
This whole fight scene is beautiful. Better than hollywood puts out.
I love these Chinese Kung Fu movies. They used to have earlier versions of them on TV on Sundays. Flying around, walking on the walls and ceiling. Great stuff. The hopping vampire ones were funny as hell.
Hahaha! I remembered that hopping vampire film!
Good job on blocking the subtitles with your logo. Well done.
I always loved how she sneered and showed disdain for them as they had a go at her. Best bar fight scene ever? Restaurant?
In case anyone wanted to know what the subtitles say when the image appears, here's my crack at it:
"Boss, this is going to take awhile. It's stuff that's only available from the large restaurant."
"Better get going then."
I didn’t appreciate this film when it came out. I thought that there were more beautiful martial art films than this. However, when i became older, i came to realise how beautifully this film was made.
First time I saw this, I saw it on video so I rewound it to make sure I'd seen what I'd just saw. A friend of mine said that she saw it in the movie theater and at the end of the scene people stood up and clapped.
the wire work was amazing in this movie....
Great movie and I’ll always remember the great ending of that last scene.
I love this movie so much and I remember 13 year old me falling in love with this actresses.
Love this movie. The sheer ridiculousness is amazing!
Pantomime!
My favorite part is when, at 30 seconds, you cant read the subs because out of all the screen space available to put a subscribe notification we chose to put it exactly over the subs. Really conveys the intent of the channel creator. Director nailed it and knocked it out of the park.
that movie is still incredible
For the Gen Z watching you have no idea how revolutionary this film was. It was perhaps the first time I was crazy over a foreign film. It’s a masterpiece
I also watched this when it first came out. Theatre in NoCal. It still holds up as a good flick!
2:47 Why did she have to burn my boy Gou like that? 😂😂
Naturally that scene was shot with wire work but it was shot beautifully that's for sure.
Not really
It's the wire work that helps make this crap movie very pathetic.
The action choreography also makes it pretty much crap as a movie...... my nickname for this smelly turd...Crouching Crap, Hidden Shit
And yes, I love Kung Fu movies. I've watched HUNDREDS...
When Bruce Lee died, HK, China, Taiwan and several other countries cranked out HUNDREDS and hundreds of Kung fu movies..to find his replacement
The Jose Theater, in San Jose CA, would show 3 for $1....and changing them regularly....I virtually lived in that movie theater.
Most were crap......but there were actually a good many with good stories
Sometimes I think the wire detracts fromthe scene. Zhang had so much skill and flexibility she could have overcome them all without flying.
THAT MOVIE IS A CLASSIC. GOOD STORY. LOTS OF ACTION.
This is a really beautiful fairytale movie.
I still love it every time I see it.
I got to be honest after all these years this movie still holds up
Martial Arts movies were never the same after this came out
This is about the only movie I've seen where I wanted to buy another ticket as soon as it was over and watch it again.
I love you Zhang Ziyi
That final flourish when she finished was awesome she busted some amazing moves .
@3:38 that spinning high jump is so satisfying 😌
Even mixed with violence the poetry in movement is enchanting and filled with calm. We would be lured in a swordfight and end on our back just smelling the aroma of the thea and wondering what happened. This movie is still not outdated and holds so much envigorating moments that it can compete and outclass any other movie of today (by far). 💥👌
