    One thing to note for the do it your selfer... please use brass chisel or you can cause a fire. Metal on metal sparking on top of gas is probably a bad idea

    Dear Scotty, THANK YOU for another great mechanic training video. My great uncle Ferdinand Javier Venezuela the III once showed me how to drop the gas tank ...his fuel pump was much different though. It was inside several white bags that he just dropped in there. He asked me if I wanted these fuel pumps in my 81 slammed Lincoln Continental and I say to him "No Way Jose", my car is all original equipment!

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому +10

    yes, pressure test it first AFTER changing the fuel filter, could be a weak pump

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    @rogersvids Na, it could be tons of stuff. If the pump is wearing out, generally you will lose top end speed due to lack of pressure. cold starting stresses the entire fuel and ignition system, and minor glitches in anything can cause a first time longer crank. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @Compwhiz128 fuel filters keep crud out of the carb or fuel injectors. Most cars have the big fuel filters AFTER the fuel pump, and only a tiny screen before the pump. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    @XxgunsxX1 Yes, but if you noticed, I didn't have to remove the fuel pressure line from the pump assembly as it stayed connected to the steel lines on the top of the tank cover. In thise case, the lines had enough flex to leave em on during the process. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    @dangerline95 they just bolt or snap off with special tools if they have internal clips. BUT, most modern cars have em inside the gas tank, requiring removal of the tank, so they rarely get changed.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    @bumpyfruck yea, but I've never had one blow up on me yet, as I work outside with a big fan, and the vapors don't collect to blow up. If you work inside, yes.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @Ed3891 no, they are different. Depressurizing it removes the pressure on the high side line that goes to the engine. But really, I never bother, it just squirts a little gas out then

    thanks scotty! even better that i have found with our ford is that the ring is accessable from the boot under the carpet covered by a metal plate glued and sealed by screws.. so thank god dont have to lower the tank at all.. you have helped so much. so a HUGE thanks from Australia

  • @Michiganborn1969
    @Michiganborn1969 13 років тому +3

    Great video & Mustang! I wonder when Ford started putting the 5.0L back in it? Another tip I was told to tell if your fuel pump is bad is to take the gas cap off, put the key to run, then put your ear in the gas filler line. Also I heard that b/c of recent high gas prices more people are running out of gas & that's what causes the fuel pump to fail b/c gas acts like a lube for the pump.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @nismo2ful basically, yes. But some have access holes you can get the pump out from inside the car through that opening when you take the cover off

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    @suburbanator91 this is about tank dropping fuel tanks, which unfortunately most American cars are. Yes, many foreign cars have access panels. Always check before doing all that work. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому +7

    it could be the security system, that shuts off the fuel injection from working. Have a guy like me analyze that first, it requires a dealer level scan tool to figure that one out

  • @PACKyourSHITfolks420
    @PACKyourSHITfolks420 12 років тому +6

    You don't always have to take the fuel tank off. Sometimes there is a cover under the back seat, and you can pull it out and replace it that way. Much easier.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @Compwhiz128 You can't have a mechanical pump under the seat, it would have to be an electronic one, mechanical ones run off the engine. Do not run on empty though , it runs crud through the system and clogs up the carb. Scotty

    For everyone out there, don't matter my mistake. Be sure the connect the ground wire bc I had pump go bad in freezing weather. In top of which I was traveling to diff state. So I did all the work in AutoZone parking lot laying in the snow and freezing weather. So before putting truck bed back on and reinstalling of course I'd test it. But didn't work and I went thru about 4 new, including having to rewire. It was super bowl Sunday and I was late. Finally a guy passing by asked me if I had the ground connected. Nope. Totally didn't realize I needed it connected. I thought it was for electrical surge protector. Started right up. Just a simple wire coming from an area I didn't think important caused me so much grief. So don't forget about it.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @amirr007 tons of things can do that, start by checking the fuel pump pressure and if it's low replace the pump. Pray it's that simple, the rest is VERY complex to analyze.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @TonyInTopeka the old pump wires should have gone to a pump with a plus and a minus on it, for positive and negative. Route the wires the same way on your new pump. If your pump has no plus or minus, get one that does, they have to be marked.

    @xMarinex93 generally not, a bad pump will burn out quick and never start again. often dirty injectors, try my video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and have that done. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    only way to correctly analyze it is to hook up a high level scan computer, run it, and when it shuts off, the computer makes a data movie which is then analyzed. The ONLY way, so do that and don't guess, all good mechanics have that equipment

  • @scottykilmer

    @623bullet of course check for leaks anywhere, but I doubt you used that kind of fuel in that short period of time unless its flying out a leak. I would assume an incorrect gas gauge sender myself. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @ts46176 I work outside with a giant fan blowing fumes away from me. So I've never had any problems with fire. IF you work inside, yes, definitely use a brass punch to stop possible sparks. Scotty

    I had my cars tank changed cause it had to much rust on it. THE IDIOTS at the shop used LIQUID Gaskets so my fuel pump got CLOGGED and my car stopped.... a 1 hour trip took me 10 hours car stopped and goes for 5 mins..... • @scottykilmer

    yes, replace the fuel pump. But if you want to test the fuel pump voltage you would have to get test wires connected close to the pump and measure it there

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @MrMrtiki tis true , tis true. Don't crank a car that say E on the gas gauge, cause that'll burn the pump out. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

    they often last a LONG time, but if it's soft and ballooned out, auto parts stores sell fuel line hose

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @IndigoBipolarGemini Yea, those oldsters are getting hard to get. Realize you can remove codes just by disconnecting a battery cable for one minute. and you can access those codes using a paper clip and watching the check engine light flashes. Get a cheap manual with directions for that, all auto parts stores or amazon can sell you that. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    realize only oem factory fuel pumps last very long in those things. BUT, also check the wiring, it could be going bad to the pump or the fuel pump relay could be bad.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @lilwabbit109 No, there is no access panel to do that.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    yes, a torch would tend to blow things up. But I can't believe air tools won't get it off, my earthquake air gun always worked on any I had to get off. Try a long cheater bar, socket, and extension and pray. Push comes to shove, cut it off with a hacksaw and get a replacement part to put it back on with using fuel injection hoses and clamps to reinstall that.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    tons of things can do that, including a clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump. Check those first.

    The only thing you forgot to mention is that you should peel back the carpeting in the trunk &/ or pull the back seat out as that is where it it can be as well. The Toyota Corolla is the best example of the pump being under the back seat, as well as the Subaru's. The GM W, H, & K platforms are cars where it would be under a panel in the trunk floor; they do that cause the rear sub frame goes under the tank and would require dropping the rear sub frame 1st to drop the fuel tank.

    I did this once on my '95 F150. It has two tanks, which was nice since we could still drive home, but bad because gas from the rear tank found it's way in the front tank, causing it to spill out the filler cap (which changed it from "I'll get around to it eventually" to "this needs to get done NOW!")

I heard your supposed to change the fuel filter with it, but i got a little dirt and metal in my gas tank while changing the pump. should i replace the filter now or run a tank or two of gas through the old filter so i dont clog up my new one right away?

    @623bullet you should never hear the pump runing in a Honda, so replace it now, and the filter. Scotty
