She didn't mention how "purity" is such a gross word to use. Many autistic people can and do consent to sexual activities. I am someone who defines myself as high functioning and I didn't discover I had autism until I was already through puberty. I have had sex and consented and I never want to be thought of as "pure" for my autism. How disgusting
My guess is that they think autism makes someone more "childish" or optimistic, so therefore "innocent" and "pure." They seem to forget that even optimistic children aren't all that "innocent" and "pure." No human being is truly pure.

I've heard people call autistics (and other young people with disabilities) "pure of heart" but I thought it was a compliment. I guess it isn't?
@@Em_Elizabeth sometimes it can be a complement, but other times it's really infantalizing and rude, usually the people mean well but it can be harmful
@@Em_Elizabeth it's a positive stereotype. Like the Asians are smarter stereotype. By calling whole certian groups of people "pure" it's taking away their individuality and putting them on a pedestal. It's kind of dehumanizing because it's like saying they're not "normal" they're pure! Positive stereotypes also often lead to a bad outcome if a person in that group doesn't fit in the box the majority gave them. I might be wrong, but that's how I feel about it.
I also think that “high functioning” can give people the wrong idea. Like, definitely don’t underestimate me, but maybe don’t overestimate me either. Because it shocks the fuck out of people when I have meltdowns because I’m what they consider “high functioning”.
I can see why people would be upset about the term “high functioning” but ppl really need to think about it.. Use this as an example; someone whom has autism that could sit and concentration on a movie, right? That would be considered low-functioning. Someone whom is bouncing of the walls and can’t sit long enough to pay attention.. Would be considered high functioning. It’s not a literal medical term. It’s just labels, honestly. If you go based on medical terms, It’s Level 1, 2 or 3 of a legitimate spectrum scale for ASD, with their being symptoms and behaviors that are shown from one or more of those levels. Still need a medical diagnosis nonetheless
@@ifiwsaflowridbearose but high functioning makes some autistic people seem better when we are not. Also everyone functions higher and lower at different points of a day I am "high functioning" but I dont function most of the time. Most autistic people are not employed. I do think there does need to be some clarification label but that would be saying aspergers. People dont like the person who it was named after but it isn't about him.
I entirely 100% agree with this, it’s like when people say “high functioning” they usually attempt to erase the struggle that that individual autistic person faces. My partner experiences the same issue a lot.
I am not autistic but I have similar struggles with severe ADHD. People who don’t really know me are always surprised by that because I’m intelligent or because I’m “doing well.” I could never sit through a movie and just because I put in invisible effort that neurotypical people don’t see doesn’t mean it’s not there. I think people shouldn’t be put into boxes of how they’re expected to behave because of pointless labels they’re given about their “functioning”

“Special abilities people have this purity...” just no on so many levels. There is no need to infantilize us. Autistic people are just as complex, if not more complex, than neurotypicals. This myth of “purity” is also part of what leads to the problem of disabled peoples sexualities being considered taboo.

As someone on the spectrum, being infantilized makes me feel so gross, either it makes me feel like predator bait or a charity case, and I don't like it. Like I'm not a child, I'm in no way a pure little thing to either protect or defile.
I saw on Facebook that the girl who bullied me throughout school and made my life hell for years apparently was diagnosed Aspie and HP... So yeah autistic people can be assholes and mean girls! Now I think of it she probably mirrored teenage behaviour or used bullying as a shield to protect herself, but hey it's not an excuse... I have at least 2-3 friends who suspect that they might be neuroatypical and they are awesome. Saying a certain population of people is "pure and innocent" is hella infantilizing and gross.

the fact that the variety interviewer compared an autistic person to an inanimate object just because they are non-vocal is so disturbing and abhorrent, does she also think that people who use sign language are inanimate?? it's simply a disgusting level of ableism

The movie is terrible and damaging. But what concerned and bothered me more was her response to everything. She freaked out on everyone who was disappointed and trying to educate her, then went to every news outlet and said she wouldn't apologize, called everyone out for being overdramatic and not understanding, then said she was sorry, shouldn't have said anything, and blamed it on wanting to protect Maddie and Maddie's projects so much that she got over defensive. All respect lost for Sia. She's out of her mind
exactly! when i first heard about the situation i was like “hmm maybe she can still save herself if she apologizes and redos the whole movie and stuff or cancels it” and then i read the tweets and was like “oh god nope there’s no saving her”

Apparently, Maddie told her several times during filming that she was uncomfortable filming some of the scenes, to the point that she apparently had breakdowns, and that the autistic community would not respond well to the movie, and yet Sia ignored her. Sia is so far up her own ass that she wouldn’t even listen to the person the role was written for (yeah, apparently Sia’s comments about hiring a nonverbal autistic actress are bullshit and Maddie was always who she had in mind for Music)

Aside from the obvious mockery this film made, the relationship between Maddie and sia freaks me out in general, it sounds like Maddie is very pressured into a lot of Sias work, not to mention sleeping in the same bed as sia at sleepovers, and “twinning” with her, idk if it’s just me but this doesn’t sound normal, sia is an adult and Maddie is a minor! Just imagine if the genders were changed to a man and a girl!
I totally agree... it’s a really weird relationship & Sia even said she never wanted to do a movie or music video without Maddie, so it’s kind obvious this movie was always meant to star maddie... it’s like obsession and grooming. Very unhealthy!

As a autistic teenager who isn’t the stereotype, I’m an actor as well. I believe, acting is acting so people will play roles they don’t have/do in real life (But I definitely agree with your point). But the things I find harmful is; Sia could have kept trying to find an autistic actress, and Sia used really harmful stereotypes. Lastly the thing that disgusts me the most is that the characters around Maddy’s character treat her horribly, and the ‘supportive’ characters treated her horribly too!
Edit: The only time when I felt a neuotypical actor didn’t make a mockery in my opinion is Benedict Cumberbatch (Who played Alan Turner). And I am also a writer, so if you want me to write a good script I will!

Glenn Close made a wonderful statement about this sort of thing. Include absolutely everyone in the casting process, and then the best actor for the job should be chosen. She also mentioned the grey area of A-list actors getting projects greenlit faster, and that's why controversies like "Ghost in the Shell" arise.

Yes. If I'm not mistaken, it was in that moment she said that no autistic person was in the staff bc the environment was not proper for a actor with autism (?). She practically said she didn't want to adapt the worlplace to a worker that is autistic, which is strange. Plus, she promoted Autism Speaks which I don't think I have to explain further what is the problem.

before this video I had no idea how horrible those terms are. I used to use terms like that because it's how my parents would describe my older brother, but I absolutely am dropping it out of my vocabulary from now on.
I also never knew how bad autism speaks is before I saw illuminaughtii's video on it last year. I wish my parents would take the time to educate themselves on these things as well; it's difficult when I'm the one learning and by extension trying to educate them, only for them to say that I'm being too sensitive or some shit like that
@@deerkota im so sorry. I think the best thing to do is to find people who do have autism and then see what they say is ok and what is not. Personally, I don't have autism, so I make sure to learn and educate myself by watching others who do. Sometimes parents simply can't relate and mess up at times. We have to cut em a bit of slack since they grew up in a time where talking about mental health was unheard of. I think trying to educate them slowly but effectively is the best situation. I hope things go well- and I hope your brother is doing well :D
@@ohhmangos there are so many issue with these terms. Me being called "high functioning" is scares me that those being called "low functioning" might feel like I'm better than them or something when that's not the case. We're all equal.
And those deemed as "high functioning" often have there struggles dismissed because "they can deal with it". "High functioning", in my understanding, is basically a really problematic term for an autistic person who's better at masking. Masking is hiding our stimming or "acting neurotypically". I was shamed a lot for stimming as a teen, so now I bite the insides of my cheeks, cross my toes in my shoes and developped dermatillomania. I have a lot of scarring from the skin picking and cheek biting, but it meant I would get yelled at or get bullied by my younger sister.
I cant believe she stated that she pressured an 11 year old who she has an almost familial connection to (god mother) to create this literal mockery of autistic people. She even states she made an 11 year old cry she was so uncomfortable with acting she had to do on a moral basis, and acts as though its no big deal. If this is how she treats someone so "important" to her, I just cant imagine her actually trying to accommodate the other child actor at all.

yes my respect for kristina went up after she posted this. i already loved her but it’s so refreshing that she supports autistic people like myself.
When Paige talked about the functioning labels, I almost cried because in Austria you have to write an essay to graduate called VWA. I wrote mine on Hans Asperger and his role in the Eugenics-Programme. It is not remotely well-known enough. My brother got diagnosed with the „Asperger’s-Syndrome“ (yes, still a separate diagnosis here)
It is just a subject I care a lot about so seeing Paige talk about it made me so happy. And I want to thank both of you incredible human beings for talking about it.
The ICD is has been updated and the next version starts being used next year and then the diagnosis will change to autism spectrum disorder too.
I feel like ableism is so ingrained in our culture and this movie, if you can even call it that, is really the product the absolute ignorance and misunderstanding of disabilities like autism. Like I’m an autistic and I’m still learning about the ableist stuff I do towards my own group. Like the “functioning” language, and even making fun of horse girls and people like that. Like why would I make fun of peoples hyper fixations when I have so many of my own. Ableism is so woven into our culture that we say and do ableist stuff everyday without even batting an eye.
Also you probably won’t see this but I want to thank you for making this video and educating yourself on these issues. It really means so much 💖✨🥰
As an autistic person, the trailer itself made me cry with how bad it was.
That interview, specifically the part about the horrible functioning labels, reminded me of exactly why I was denied any kind of help relating to my autism growing up. My family was told that since I'm able to speak and have a high IQ, that I wouldn't need services or therapies to better understand my peers or society in general. I struggled so much as a child and teenager to fit in and understand the unspoken rules that everyone around me seemed to understand that I wasn't privy to. It took until I was 17 and found educational videos on UA-cam to teach me why certain topics aren't appropriate in certain situations, why a particular idiom means one thing and not another, why I should pay attention to body language to see if the person I'm talking to is getting bored of me talking about video games. Because of ableism, I was denied everything I was supposed to have learned years ago, and to this day I am still trying to make up for what I missed out on

i can usually understand idioms and vague- ish language because i was a voracious reader as a child and have always been really interested in literature, but i suspect i might be autistic, or have some comorbid neurodivergency because i do have a lot of struggles and life experiences that other autistic women and girls have. i'm sorry to hear that you have struggled to fit in, unfortunately this world was not built for autistic or neurodivergent people, and there are a lot of people who could care less about us. i'm so angry that the community is being used as inspiration porn, being infantilised and being endangered by this movie's promotion of unhealthy practice/mindset by caregivers. so many autistic content creators have spoken out about this, yet i always see people who know nothing about the community trying to speak over us.
i really hope you stay strong, are able to find an outlet for stress and can someday be your true self and have more joyful days! :)

I had no idea that Leslie Odom, Jr. is in this movie. That's so disappointing. I'm a huge fan of his work and that is just extremely upsetting.
I also feel awful for Maddie in this situation. I feel like actors do get blamed for a lot of things that are directorial choices and she was clearly uncomfortable. Her whole relationship with Sia is honestly very disturbing and she only turned eighteen in September, which means that she was a minor for a lot of or all of the filming (and during most of her weird dynamic with Sia).
But most importantly, I am appalled by Sia. This movie is just indescribably bad. I used to be a fan of her music, but I never paid attention to her personal life. I'll never hear her music the same way again and I am just disgusted by this whole project. I really hope that it fails.

Ok I’m 13 and my little brother is autistic and yeah it can be a little hard for me sometimes but honestly I feel awful for him because he’s constantly bullied by his peers for reacting differently to different situations. Even my own dad says that he doesn’t actually have autism because my dad wants this picket fence perfect family, even though he shows many traits of it and has been diagnosed by two doctors. And the teachers and EAs at our school just sit back and do nothing to accommodate his environment to be less overwhelming for him and act appalled when he has an episode. I think this movie is incredibly harmful and seems very much like a type of satire. I have zero respect for Sia at this point because there is no excuse for this.
it's nice to hear that you're accepting of your bother and you don't let your dad misinform you. you can advocate for your brother's needs if you feel confident and really want to do it. whether it's sooner or later, i'm sure he'll appreciate it.
Personally I enjoy Sia's music but if she does something wrong I'm not going to support her. People need to realise even if you enjoy what some produces you shouldn't support them if they do something wrong.

Yes! I used to be so into her up until recently. Her music is great and she has beautiful vocals with a impressive range. However, she can’t hide her true personality after this. It is disgusting to see her response to the criticism that she has received from a group who absolutely deserve to call her out and question her morals. Yes her intentions were good to spread awareness and give those with Autism a voice, but these tweets and interviews are just further silencing them and basically saying “Shut up. I know more than you. I googled beforehand”. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen many people talking about it and it is so infuriating. I wish I could still listen to her music without having to give her my money or streams.

I love how Paige said I love you in ASL at the end. How sweet. And I really appreciate how she says disabled isn't a bad word. I am not autistic but have a disability and this really spoke to me.
I really hope that people won’t go after Maddie as much as they should go after Sia. It’s not Maddie’s fault, she’s only 14 or 15, it’s not like she was a full fledged adult and was able to properly consent to doing this. I just hope that the attacks are focused on the right person, Sia, not Maddie.

It’s so important to realize that Sia’s song “snowman” going viral on tiktok IMMEDIATELY after this controversy was NOT a coincidence. Her fans purposely banded together to make the song into a trend in order to soften the damage her reputation was taking. Please stop using the song for your artsy and beautiful videos-I really want to support you but I can’t support you and Sia at the same time. If you want to listen to the song it’s fine but please be aware of the reason it’s been shoved in our faces for so long.

Personally I feel like these conversations around representation shouldn’t focus just on the actors- like obviously that is very important but I think there’s also a lot to be said about like even if you do cast an allistic person to play an autistic character or a cis person to play a trans character you can still have autistic or trans writers and directors and autistic or trans people to help the actor create a more authentic representation. To me, the issue isn’t just that marginalized groups are being left out of their own stories as actors, but that people feel comfortable enough to write stories about us without consulting us in any way at all. I don’t really mind if the actor isn’t a part of the same community as their character as long as they are consulting people who are and listening to them.

Thank you for talking about this, I am autistic myself along with my whole family being ND. Seeing the movie really hurt me, and others in the autistic community, especially those who aren't able to "function" as well, like the character they are trying to portray. I don't think Sia should have ever done this movie. It was clear she didn't actually care about autistic people. This isn't representation, it's just another slapped together a movie to further push the narrative that we are less. It's clear that Sia does see us as less, because she can't be bothered to hire an actual autistic actress, or work with autistic people in general, instead working with Autism Speaks, which ISN'T for autistic people.
There was already a review, I believe it was in an Australian publication, where they not only addressed the problems addressed in this video, but said it was a crap movie besides all the controversy. They said it was full of boring cliches and just not good. That made me so happy. Nothing about us without us.
I have now read dozens of reviews both Australian and USA, they all say that it is a crap movie.

The difference between neurodivergent people and neurotypical people is just that neurodivergent people have developmental disorders or mental illness. Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, and Autism are all examples of neurodivergence.

This is so important! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this video, as a neurodivergent person myself I am commonly misunderstood by everyone around me (except for my also neurodivergent best friend and family members) and content like this, especially from such a large creator, is amazing to see. Plus, Paige is a, pardon my french, fucking wonderful creator and this is a *perfect* collab.
I have ADD/ADHD so idk if im neurodivergent or neurotypical (I just got diagnosed) but as someone who hasn't been discrimminated against, looked at weirdly for how I acted, or been bullied for that specific reason, I am so sorry. This movie is truly harming everyone who is neurodivergent- but especially autistic people. I just want to let you know that some of us out there support you all as real human beings and do not look at you as "weird" or mentally damaged. It took so much energy from me though and it got to a point where I had to stop because I would be doing it 24/7. Thats when my therapist, psychiatrist, family, and myself realized there was something. Honestly it sucks how many girls there are that dont get diagnosed because we internalize it and then go on fits because we hold in our emotion for too long. I hope your doing okay btw.

Truth be told, I never knew about the link between the functioning labels and the Nazis, and I've called myself higher functioning since I was diagnosed nearly 2 years ago. It's honestly terrifying how the term has moved into modern day terminology and how many people on the spectrum (including myself) have used it without knowing its origins. I’ve been a sub & follower of yours from the get go & hair tutorial days, and as a 22yr old autistic woman myself I can’t express enough gratitude for this video. Thanks so much to you & Paige for collaborating on this! I was finally diagnosed this past April. Up until that point I’d been misdiagnosed with OCD, CPTSD, and depression. I was also in and out of therapy for 11yrs. My diagnosis should’ve been autism from the start, that would’ve saved me so much pain to know that there wasn’t something fundamentally wrong with me. I’m just tuned into a slightly different frequency than most. If I had grown up seeing autistic representation, more girls talk about being autistic, and knew what it actually was from those who had it I would’ve known sooner. I would’ve given myself some patience or grace. I would’ve avoided a massive burnout episode that I’m still struggling to recover from. We need accurate representation terribly because there is so much harmful misinformation about what autism actually is. We function, live, socialize, and see things a little different from neurotypicals, but at our core we’re no different than most and we want a lot of the same things as everyone else. So why Sia would take an opportunity to express that sentiment and crap all over it I’ll never know. What I do know is that the more autistic people that speak up on their platforms the more accurate representation we will get, and the irony there is not lost on anyone. Thanks girls, so so much!

The strange thing for me is that, I was diagnosed with being on the Autism spectrum when I was 3 years old. At the time they used the term PDD NOS since the spectrum term wasn't common yet.
I got speech therapy and went to a preschool for autistic kids. This ended up helping me a lot talking wise.
When I was 11 in middle school, my mom told me about autism and how I was diagnosed with it as a kid. I remember researching it after that online. All the smaller things that I didn't think much about suddenly hit me. Why I loved wearing head phones so much to drown out sounds. Why I struggled with social interactions, I figured I was just quiet and shy.
However, the opposite is true when I talk about things I know a lot about such as academics or medical science. I would go on full on rants about the different body systems as a kid to whoever would listen. I still love it and plan to pursue a career in the medical field.
Thing is, I wasn't aware that I was particularly different. No one told me otherwise, I was really just labeled the smart quiet kid a lot. Only speaking up in the classroom to answer questions most of the time.
That's how I saw myself really, so finding out the name to all of this was surprising.
So when I heard about this movie just now, just no. If a movie about autism is going to be made, it has to be done right. Ask autistic people directly about their experiences. Have them on staff, let the autistic character's actor actually be autistic. It makes sense doesn't it.

The thing I despised the most was the force restraining in the video. People don't understand that force restraining has LITERALLY killed/seriously harmed and gives nerodivergent people trauma.

One of my favorite comments that best sums up the fact that the only organization Sia consulted with for the movie was Autism Speaks was “Sia only consulting Autism Speaks for her movie about autism is like only consulting the KKK for your movie about Harriet Tubman”
What is even better is that Autism Speaks put out a statement saying that they weren't involved. The only interaction that people have been able to find is Sia retweeting their posts. It is yet another thing that shows how little research she actually did for the part. (My take is that when people were questioning her on twitter when the trailer dropped she was saying things that she thought would placate people and her knowledge level was so poor that each time she dug the hole deeper).

Hi kristina, I’m a long time subscriber, but also an actor on a TV show in Britain. I’m also disabled. I have cerebral palsy, and i play a disabled character. Ive been advocating for representation for 3 years of my career, and have had people tell me that its just a character, we shouldn’t limit the ability of able bodied people to play these roles. Ive even been told that I shouldn’t be on TV because I’m disabled. We definitely have a long way to go for equality in media, but i rarely see anyone talk about this on UA-cam. Especially among the able bodied YT community, so I genuinely want to thank you for speaking up, and for bolstering our voice. I came to you bc of Kaitlyn bennett roasting, and love your content, and now my respect for you is to the moon. Thank you for having our back.,

I’m not too informed on this topic... and I always thought saying ‘low functioning’ and ‘high functioning’ was okay, so what could I use in place of those terms that aren’t problematic? Pls lemme know ❤️ I wanna educate myself
The reason why people don't like the turm "high functioning" is because it's saying that those people have less struggles than people who considered "low functioning." It basically discredits the issues that those people on that end of the spectrum have to go through. People also don't like the term "low functioning" because it's basically saying that those people will never be able to function in the real world like people who are considered "high functioning." I personally like saying "people who need less help" and "people who need more help." I say that because it means that "high functioning" people still need help, and they have struggles, but they need less help than people who are considered "low functioning." It also means that people who are "low functioning" are still capable of doing things, but they may need more help. Hopefully that helped you learn a bit more ❤

If you feel like you need to differentiate (few circumstances where it is necessary) there is high support needs and low support needs. They reflect the amount of support someone needs to achieve rather than talking about what they can do independently according to neurotypicals.

When I first heard about sia making a movie I was actually really looking forward to it because her music, lyrics helped me a lot over the last years struggling with depression, anxiety and others things.
Then I saw a tweet about the topic of the movie and that there’s drama going on. So I read the tweets and first got very defensive for sia because I thought her reasoning behind recasting the autistic character with Maddy because the actress felt like it’s too much and that she doesn’t want to do the role anymore. I know I was obviously not getting all the info which I totally feel ashamed of myself.
I realized how bad and disgusting the whole situation is when I watched the trailer for the first time.
Honestly I never thought she could fuck this movie up this bad. I felt so disgusted with the way Maddy portrayed the character because you could clearly see that she was doing it so overly dramatic and disgustingly mocking the whole autistic community with it.
I don’t get how anyone involved could look at this movie and thinking this was in any way or form ok.
It bothers me that Sia is so wrong and aggressively defensive that she’s not even able to realize that she may had good intentions going into this movie idea but clearly failed in the process and should be emphatic and grown enough to just not going through with it and just telling that and why she messed up -.-

Most real caregivers are more than likely just as upset about the representation. (I'm a paraprofessional in schools, and things like this upset me because of the ways it misrepresents the kids that I work with.) I am not autistic so I do not speak for the community. However, my older sister is severely autistic and is nonverbal. (Much like the character in the film from what I can gather)
She is unable to be left alone unsupervised because she could be a danger to herself (ie she also has pica and will try to eat things that aren’t food).
She is out of the school system now and I am her part-time caretaker right now while my parents are searching for something who we can trust to become a caretaker, as both my parents work and I am a student. We have seen so many daytime care facilities that terrify us, that we would never leave her alone in (plus covid is making checking out places much more difficult).
The idea of the holds have always been terrifying to me, and the idea that this film would show the holds as being acceptable to use show the danger that this movie will have. I would NEVER do a hold like the ones shown on my sister even in a last resort. They’re distressing and dangerous.
I’m scared for my sister and others. I hope people are smart enough to listen to the both of you and don’t watch this movie.
