The Philippine flag was first displayed on May 28, 1898, after the Battle of Alapan. The flag was formally unfurled on June 12, 1898, during the proclamation of Philippine independence.

The Japanese occupation of the Philippines, if you really think about it was not too long ago, I remember my grandpa who also fought in the war, telling me horrible stories that were happening at that time. My grandpa was born in the 1920s, and my parents were born in 1956 and 1958. I guess this is why the effects of the Japanese occupation is something I am more familiar with. I grew up hearing stories from my grandpa. Growing up I met elder ladies who were among the women taken by the Japanese, more familiarly called “comfort women.” When I go back to the history of the Philippines, sometimes all I can say is “Can we catch a break? Please just leave us alone!” There are good things that came out of these invasions but the web of suffering and pain is so far, wide, and extensive. That is why it is very heartbreaking when Filipinos lose sight of their identity and what makes us a great nation.
This maybe why filipinos are resilient our culture is the collaboration of all this struggles and mishaps... Thats why despite of all struggles we are facing each day we can still smile, be happy and thankful to god 😊😊😊 Thanks pierre for showing love and interest to philippines..
Great singing is I think also a result of struggles. There is a reason why I think people who had a lot of struggles like African-Americans as well as African-Latinos or European Roma ("gypsies") created great music and Filipinos also. Music is one way to feel less sad. One famous Filipino song, Payapang Daigdig (Peaceful World) was composed in Manila when it was totally ruined after WW2. It is beautiful and haunting and maybe Pierre could react to it.
Bayan ko also it became the theme song during the people power revolution vs. marcos senior regime and also lupang hinirang philippines national anthem... the song writing of this songs is really exceptional it describe the situation and emotion they felt at that time.. music trully convey emotions that trancends time 😊😊😊
@SB1897.5Bayan Ko was written by Jose Alejandrino, former Defense Minister of the First Republic. It was originally in Spanish and later translated. Singing it was not allowed during the American colonial period.
17:57 how did they communicate? Magellan brought a slave as a translator for his expedition. According to some sources, this slave was well taken care of because he knew a lot of languages. Same sources also say that he was originally from somewhere in the Philippines, taken west to Europe as a slave, and because the expedition went past the Philippines with him still part of it, that slave was the first person to circumnavigate the globe, even before the expedition came back home to Spain. Magellan didn't make it, as he died in battle in the Philippines
About how Magellan communicated the Filipinos back then, he acquired a slave before from Malacca (in present day Malaysia) which he baptized as "Enrique" and he is the one who acts as interpreter. Malay and Filipino languages has similarity so it might be easier for him. Another theory is Malay is the lingua franca of maritime Southeast Asia at that time, so it is easier for Enrique to communicate.
There is actually a tagline in my city,."Wala pa ang Pilipinas, naa na ang Butuan"...There is no Philippines yet, But there is Butuan. The Balangay artifacts are in our museum.
great video sir. from bini to philippine history. philippine history is very good. some stories are saving more than 1000 jews the philippines help south korea in korean war also accepting the white russians
42:20 I beg to disagree. The Philippines then already had an organized national army headed by General Antonio Luna who learned modern military tactics in Europe.
Magsaysay, the best president the Philippines ever had. Btw the Philippines national flag came to be during Aguinaldo's term. It was his design and was sewn by Don̈a Marcela Agoncillio and family. But before that we had so many more flags that was used by the katipuneros during the Philippines revolution against the Spaniards.
The current Philippine flag you mentioned was waived on June 12, 1898 by General then President Emilio Aguinaldo when he declared the independence of the Philippines from Spain (Though it was disputed that it was not him but another person that was given the honor to waive it). Since then, there were minor revisions of the flag but the base was just the same (blue, red, yellow, 3 stars, sun, 8 rays of the sun). But I also read that the flag already appeared one month prior on a battle in Cavite too so that is why during May 28, it is also declared as the National Flag Day. The independence day of the Philippines was changed to June 12 (the independence from Spain) on the 1960s so the June 12 is the one we celebrated. We only commomerate July 4 as US-Philippines friendship day. I cannot find an exact reason why thte changed was pushed but I think its because the July 4, 1946 was only granted by the United States to us peacefully and it was a fulfillment of the Tydings-McDuffie Law in which we will be granted independence on that day. If June 12 is chosen, it is the one that is dramatic since we granted out independence through a revolution.
Im glad u react this video sir about the philippines, not only Ppop artist, hope you can watch and react of philippines "Open door" documentary video, have a great day😊
We've managed to correct the American narrative that they "granted" us our independence. We now celebrate our independence day on June 12 (and have been doing so for some time), since it was on that day in 1898, when Philippine revolutionaries under Aguinaldo, declared our independence from Spain. Actually, the Spanish colonizers were no longer in control of much of the country by the time the first American soldiers set foot on Philippine soil. Unfortunately, the Spaniards, proud white Europeans that they were, could not accept losing to their former colony, so they "agreed to lose" to the Americans instead. A fake naval battle was staged in Manila Bay and the Americans marched into Intramuros, where they accepted Spanish surrender. And that is how we ended up being a colony again.
That is true but the first Philippine Republic had its own leaders quarreling far worse than the PPop fandoms, or its own military still celebrating fiestas even while retreating from US forces. The Philippines might have fallen apart even if the USA had not come or fallen to other colonial powers like Germany. In fact the German navy was also in Manila Bay in 1898, waiting like vultures just in case the USA decided not to take the place, and considering how Germany was in those days it could have been far worse and more like the Japanese occupation but longer.
1:09:00 Corazon made a lot of mistakes in her reign and one of the biggest mistake is the declaration of 1987 constitution and after that, numerous rebel groups and terrorist group emerge as the constitution makes the capital more powerful while the other provinces felt the neglect and paid taxes which will be be accumulated to the capital like an imperial manila.. Also, this video did not explain the real reason why marcos declared martial law.. even though magsaysay made an effort to fight communism, during marcos' term they are the one who made a lot of chaos in the country.. neighboring countries in southeast asia are also submitting to communism too at that time so marcos have to decide as soon as possible.. the problem with the constitution at that time, there is no way to stop the martial law after everything was controlled.. most of the people who cried over human rights, are activists/communist..

57:56 We celebrate independence day on June 12 commemorating our independence from Spain. Our true independence from foreign entities was on July 4, 1946. But, we haven't experienced absolute independence. We are still under the regime of our own greedy people. 😢

Magellan's expedition has a polyglot slave interpreter (Enrique of Malacca) who speaks Cebuano and other dialects in the area but no detailed records was provided for him. All we know is he was bought on a slave trade in Sumatra, brought to Europe as an intrepreter. He may be the first person to circumnavigate the world. Note: Aside from.Warsaw, Manila is the most destroyed city after the second world war. It became the theather of war between US and Japan who want to take control over the strategic city.
The Philippine flag was first flown on May 28, 1898, after the Filipino victory at the Battle of Alapan, and formally unfurled on June 12, 1898, during the declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite. It was designed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Philippine Revolution. The flag was sewn in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, assisted by her daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad.
This is really deep diving. Wow! I learned a lot beyond the teachings from school about Philippine history. One thing that sticks to my mind is that BINI Aiah hails from the same place as Datu Lapu-Lapu. The famous Visayan warrior who is responsible for Magellan's demise that the entire island is named after him. I wonder if you have visited his shrine during your visit there 🤙
@NeonReactionsPierre Aiah is BTW but you might already know this a devotee of the Sto. Niño, the Infant Jesus. His festival in Cebu, the Sinulog, is right now. His image was what Magellan brought to Cebu, and they say was found again when Legazpi returned. There is a historical debate on whether the Cebuanos really said "Kastila, Kastila" when Magellan made them burn their old idols, as the Italian chronicler Pigafetta wrote, or whether they actually were saying "Pastilan" which is a curse word in Visayan until today.
57:51 that was the intended Independence Day for the Philippines but we reverted it back to June 12 when Aguinaldo first declared it over the Spanish and July 4 became the Philippine-American Friendship Day instead.
Interestingly, the rise of P-pop seems to coincide with the real economic rise of the Philippines. For the first time since independence, the Philippines is finally experiencing real sustained economic growth after being seen as the sick man of Asia for decades. I don't think this is a coincidence though. Japan and SK experienced a golden age of their culture during their own economic booms. Another interesting thing I noticed is that it is seldom talked about, in favor of other countries with a lot of hype like Vietnam and Mexico (not hating on these two awesome countries tho) when it comes to rising economic situations. No matter, it still doesn't change the fact that the Philippines been one of South East Asia's fastest growing countries (and it has taken the top spots many times now) for a good part of this decade now. Another third interesting matter is how it is achieving this awesome economic rise. Most economic tigers usually do it via export driven focus of manufacturing cheap goods but the Philippines is doing it a different way. It is literally doing it via exporting it's people via the heroic overseas Filipino workers, and taking advantage of outsourcing. Not of goods, but the outsourcing of services. If you have talked to a customer service representative over the phone, chances are, that person is a Filipino living in the Philippines working the odd hours to align timezones with the business hours of western countries. It truly is one of a kind place that likes to do its own thing quietly in its own little corner without much fanfare, but its people will flash you a genuine smile when you notice them.
Yes, in fact some of the sponsors of BINI like the Urban Smiles Dental Clinic or the Filipina fashion label Charlotte Folk or Penshoppe cater to the new middle class of the Philippines. Several BINI and SB19 members are from struggling backgrounds like most Filipinos. Many of their Filipino fans see themselves I guess when they see their idols. In the 1970s, Nora Aunor was extremely popular for similar reasons, a poor girl from Bikol who rose to stardom. I still think the Philippines needs own industries to sustain its growth because richer countries can always decide not to get labor from overseas depending on who is voted into power. But the music industry could take off, even as ABS-CBN is way smaller than the K-Pop companies. Tourism is also an industry that is doing quite well in the Philippines. PPop helps promote it. There is a lot of hope for the Philippines which really was poor just two decades ago, most skyscrapers in Metro Manila are from this century. Hope that the rise continues.
Yea, PH is a really great place, and as I was there I fell in love with the hospitality and the smiles ... and the "not so western way" of living. Buhay ay di karera....
There was a Spanish Officer that originally came from the Spanish Colony of Rio de la Plata that served and died in Manila. His name is Fermin de San Martín. And he had a brother. His brothers name is Jose de San Martín. Also known as the "Liberator of Chile, Peru and Argentina".
Thank you for learning more about our history... The narrator forgot another title of a paramount ruler of a confederacy in Luzon, it was called Lakan...
The Mock Battle of Manila was a staged battle that took place on August 13, 1898. It was a covert operation between the Spanish and American forces to end the Spanish-American War in the Philippines. Filipinos was already winning the Filipino-Spanish War.
Thank you for expressing curiosity and interest in our country! Being German, you might be interested with Ferdinand Blumentritt. He is also German and he became Jose Rizal's close friend/confidant. I think he also helped translate two of Rizal's famous novels into Deutsch. So knowing our history and how many cultures blended with ours, you will now understand why our music became what it is today. Literally a melting pot of everything! No matter how hard life was throughout the many occupations, we became more creative with our music and even with our humor. (Maybe this became our collective trauma response as a nation. lol) Our independence day is not the American fourth of July but June 12, 1898 as proclaimed by our first president Aguinaldo. It was our independence from Spain. But really, I don't think that is an accurate claim since we were still under the imperial America for several decades after (even today we are still part of their proxy war with China). I think that the actual independence day is still part of the national conversation - as to what date should it really be. And to encapsulate what happened to us really and why we are still impoverished despite all the efforts to independence, this is Rizal's famous quote, "Why independence, if the slaves of today will be the tyrants of tomorrow?" So after the colonizers finally left, we thought the evil already left with them. Only to find out that the evil never actually left, but stayed among ourselves. 😞
This is why Depression is a rich people sickness in the Philippines because we Filipinos are tough whatever happen to our society we always smile and we keep fighting for a better future
To be honest Manila area is one of the oldest City but a lot of the surroundings are too dirty and polluted also people from those locations are too hard headed to have a sense of cleanliness that is the way they are we do have other cities that people on those location are responsible and has a good attitude towards cleanliness because some other cities don't have that mentality which is bad. It's more like every city has its own level of respect and cleanliness the only Filipinos can agree is being hospitable and nice and that's it the others thinking are not the same.
Most people living in Manila are not originally from there. Massive migration to that city happened after WW2, the times when there were still a lot of open fields in Quezon City and Araneta Coliseum stood alone with little around it isn't THAT long ago. In the province especially towns where everyone knows each other, it is easier because people are ashamed to do bad things the neighbors might talk about. In bigger towns it is different.
Youll be surprised that Filipinos were much more interconnected by sea rather than mountains. Filipino dialects were varied due to the division of the mountains rather than the sea. Thats why filipinos are much more united and “in-harmony” than single land countries like the US and UK since filipinos has less mountains.
Fun fact The president who sent Filipino troops to help South Korea during the Korean War was Elpidio Quirino. In 1950, Quirino urged Congress to approve the Republic Act 573, which deployed 7,420 Filipino troops to the Korean Peninsula.¹ The Korean War was a conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, supported by the United Nations, led by the United States. The war started on June 25, 1950, when North Korean troops invaded South Korea. The Filipino troops, known as the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK), played a significant role in the war, particularly in the Battle of Yultong. On April 23, 1951, 900 Filipino soldiers fought against 40,000 Chinese troops, and despite being outnumbered, they emerged victorious.² The Battle of Yultong was a turning point in the war, and it helped to secure a strategic location for the United Nations forces. The bravery and sacrifice of the Filipino soldiers during this battle earned them the nickname "The Fighting Filipinos". In the end, the Korean War resulted in a stalemate, with the signing of the Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953. The war had significant human costs, with estimates suggesting that over 3 million people died.
I can say.... this video incapsulated 60-70 percent of the Philippine history... just saying.. possibly not even a quarter of the "true/complete" history of the Philippines... but thats just my opinion/observation as a Filipino myself.... Im just glad to hear in this video that Panay was never conquered by the spaniards hehehe.... im originally from Panay, BTW... Anyway thats another bunch of historical topic of discussion/debate.... So in this video i can say its 60%-70% of the "known" or common knowledge about the Philippine History was tackled. There was a skip.... just for example... this video skipped to mention the former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who, just like her father, focused her term in the development of the Philippines economic and industrial growth.... c'mon people RORO is such a big help for us who's from visayas and Mindanao areas. Lets not skip her.
the 4th of july is considered the philippine-american friendship day.. philippine independence is celebrated on the day that aguinaldo declared independence on june 12, 1898 and that was the day the flag was formally raised.
About the British invasion of Manila, the Brits got really lucky. The ruling Governor General at the time was dead and the new one was on his way in about a year or two. Manila only had their Bishop as the acting governor-general. He had no military experience and the city only had a token force to defend it. The Spanish administration fled to Pampanga when the Brits successfully took the city. Also, anecdotes say the Brits employed Indian soldiers. Some of them stayed. Local legend says these soldiers invented Kare-Kare in an attempt to recreate curry. P.S. if you check the photo of the Malolos Congress (when the first constitution was made), you'll see the Philippine flag hanging around the hall.
There's a far more deeper real history before the colonialization. Most Filipinos focused only during and after colonialization. They're still lost to this day. Philippines is a slave name given, a camouflage to cover the truth. Captors knew the real story behind this nation, that's why they searched and conquered it. But in the near future, this nation will be awakened to the real truth, and will rise because they have a purpose (mission) in the last days. Maybe it's not coincidence that you are drawn to the nation, you are invited (chosen), maybe BINI is just the gateway to know more and grow your curiosity towards the hidden truth.
26:35 I think history will repeat once again. Seeing the Philippines is the center of conflict between the US and China they might use our country as the battlefield. Poor Philippines can't even say no to it 😅🙂↔️🤧
Record said that Magellan had a servant/slave that understand the language. The servant was bought by slavery at the middle east and said that he was much farther east that Magellan want to get the spices/trade. Since he can't go east due to treaty of Paris, he goes west as far as he can believing that the world is round. And so the servant of Magellan goes back to heast austrenatian brothers and slightly understand some.
Flag; Its sown and used in the battle in 1898,during pres EMELIO AGUINALDO,and raised during our first independence day Colors blue for peace, truth and justice, red means bravery patriotism, the triangle means equality,3 stars major big island, luzon visayas and mindanao and 8 sun rays represent s 8 provinces who triggered revolution which put martial law under spanish occupation
Just for context, Magellan communicate with the locals with the help of a captured slave from Malaccan Sultanate who they named "Enrique". It is said that Enrique there might be the first person who completed a full Circumnavigation.
Thank you, sir! We're thankful that you appreciate our country. This may not be a so important info, but last year the members of SB19 were each awarded of the Murillo-Velarde map, nicknamed as the "Mother of all Philippine Maps". The map, in fact, played an important role for us to defend our teriyorial right over the West Philippine Sea against a neighboring country UNTIL NOW. Only few personalities are awarded with replicas of the map. To be awarded with this means that you have made a significant impact for the country. The map was also featured in the boy group's MV of "What". This goes to show that music and history are greatly connected. I've attached the article for you to know more about it. Thank you so much for appreciating our culture. We still have a long way to go but we'll get there. As mentioned in Bini's "Blooming" - "malayo pa, pero malayo na." Thanks Pierre! 🫶🏻 www.google.com/amp/s/entertainment.inquirer.net/583274/why-sb19-was-given-replicas-of-the-1734-murillo-velarde-map/amp
Our ancestors had a lot of written documents. The issues were 1> they were mostly written on leaves and 2> the Spanish burned most if not all of the archives when they conquered Manila, only to later start studying the language/culture and write about it themselves in Spanish.
Our name also change after colonisation. We doesn't have surnames we got that during Spanish era to make census easier. my surname is Natividad thats Spanish af. Im Filipino in my 20's
They also have content about how Magellan explores the world they have as a translator slave but they don't know if the translator says a wrong message to Filipinos. Then the war begins

Thank you for your reaction, love it
The Philippine flag was first flown on May 28, 1898, after the Filipino victory at the Battle of Alapan, and formally unfurled on June 12, 1898, during the declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite. It was designed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Philippine Revolution. The flag was sewn in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, assisted by her daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad.

The flag was designed by Emilio Aguinaldo... adopted after the United States overthrew Spanish authority in 1898.
I wonder if you have visited his shrine during your visit there 🤙
Yes I was there, saw the statue and the big painting of the battle.
@NeonReactionsPierre That's awesome! I truly appreciate you being there in one of our country's historical place. Eeeyyy! 🤙
Philippine History, lezzzzzgoooowww!! 🇵🇭
57:51 that was the intended Independence Day for the Philippines but we reverted it back to June 12 when Aguinaldo first declared it over the Spanish and July 4 became the Philippine-American Friendship Day instead.

Stacey: my presence is a present
the Philippines: your presence [here] is a present [to your country] 🤣🤣
17:19 Speaking of Joanna, happy birthday to our best leader! 🤣
Very detailed information of my country❤️👍
Glad you liked it
Thank you Pierre!
My pleasure!
Salamat Pierre
Love the deep dive Pierre!!!
Seeing the familiar topics, feels like it took me back to my fifth grade HEKASI subject now known as Araling Panlipunan.
general Douglas macarthur was controversial in the us but considered as a hero in the Philippines and even south Korea
Thank you for learning more about our history... The narrator forgot another title of a paramount ruler of a confederacy in Luzon, it was called Lakan...
Pierre I will share to you a link of our blogspot, I have written articles here about PH precolonial history... descendantsofmariapoloin.blogspot.com/
Good and worthwhile reaction.
(Maybe this became our collective trauma response as a nation. lol)
Our independence day is not the American fourth of July but June 12, 1898 as proclaimed by our first president Aguinaldo.
Watching Pierre ❤❤
Love this new content Pierre ...
thank you so much!

In 1950, Quirino urged Congress to approve the Republic Act 573, which deployed 7,420 Filipino troops to the Korean Peninsula.¹
The Korean War was a conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, supported by the United Nations, led by the United States. The war started on June 25, 1950, when North Korean troops invaded South Korea.
The Filipino troops, known as the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK), played a significant role in the war, particularly in the Battle of Yultong. On April 23, 1951, 900 Filipino soldiers fought against 40,000 Chinese troops, and despite being outnumbered, they emerged victorious.²
The Battle of Yultong was a turning point in the war, and it helped to secure a strategic location for the United Nations forces. The bravery and sacrifice of the Filipino soldiers during this battle earned them the nickname "The Fighting Filipinos".
In the end, the Korean War resulted in a stalemate, with the signing of the Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953. The war had significant human costs, with estimates suggesting that over 3 million people died.
favvv filo reactor so genuine and the dedication is🔥
thank you so much!!! I really appreciate that
Because of bini you know more about Philippine history ❤bini to ph history
"I SHALL RETURN" famous lines of Douglas MacArthur in 1942
4th of July was changed to Phil American Friendship day and Independence Day was set back to June 12 ... the ending of the Spanish occupation
❤❤❤
There's a far more deeper real history before the colonialization. Most Filipinos focused only during and after colonialization. They're still lost to this day. Philippines is a slave name given, a camouflage to cover the truth. Captors knew the real story behind this nation, that's why they searched and conquered it. But in the near future, this nation will be awakened to the real truth, and will rise because they have a purpose (mission) in the last days. Maybe it's not coincidence that you are drawn to the nation, you are invited (chosen), maybe BINI is just the gateway to know more and grow your curiosity towards the hidden truth.
❤❤❤
Pierre! Watched this with you while ironing my clothes on a quiet Saturday night. It is rather therapeutic! 😊
Perfect, thank you
Philippine Independence Day was changed to June 12 commemorating the independence from Spain.
asia has a lot of war and is interesting. Korea, Philippines is always a buddy team all the time.
The vibes
Pre-colonial: money money, gold gold gold, trade trade trade.
Spanish colonial: depressing, suffering, organization, order, boring
1920s: chaos, global culture, anxiety, garbage, metal, death, goodbye once glorious Intramuros (until now, the glory is not reinstated).
❤💯
Magellan didn't really communicate purely with the natives, he had a slave interpreter named Enrique of Malacca. (17:58)
We have great movies in the 1950s - 1980s showing the daily lives of filipinos.
Flag; Its sown and used in the battle in 1898,during pres EMELIO AGUINALDO,and raised during our first independence day
Colors blue for peace, truth and justice, red means bravery patriotism, the triangle means equality,3 stars major big island, luzon visayas and mindanao and 8 sun rays represent s 8 provinces who triggered revolution which put martial law under spanish occupation
❤❤❤🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Just for context, Magellan communicate with the locals with the help of a captured slave from Malaccan Sultanate who they named "Enrique". It is said that Enrique there might be the first person who completed a full Circumnavigation.
thank you :)
48:38 i heard from somewhere that the attack on pearl harbor is strategical to invade Philippines.

Thank you pierre
You're welcome, thanks for being here!
Meanwhile my parents' surnames:
Father - Imperial Primavera
Mother - Belleza Morante
🤣🤣🤣🤣
They also have content about how Magellan explores the world they have as a translator slave but they don't know if the translator says a wrong message to Filipinos. Then the war begins
Hi Pierre.. Maayong Adlaw nimo diha.. 🤙🤙🤙🤙🌸🌸🌸🌸
