Good day, sir. I bought my Barbour Beaufort wax class jacket way back in the late 80's from Slivermans on the Mile End London E1. I fully waxed my jacket every two years, and It's still going strong.

Hi Ash, I've has my Beaufort since 1985. I've mainly re-waxed it myself, except for 3 occasions when I wanted a full clean and wax service to refresh the lining from the factory. It still looks like new when re-waxed; it's without a doubt my best long term clothing investment. It has never once leaked even in the most extreme of Scottish weathers, not even at the seams, (good waxing application there). As far as venting goes......open the cuffs and open the main zip when the rain eases and you'll be fine. I also own Goretex and Event jackets........they don't shame my Barbours.

    There's no bad weather.
    There's only bad clothing.
Rewaxing my Barbour is a joy I always look forward to at the end of summer.
Afterwards I always feel completely happy that autumn is coming. And as soon as the weather turns, I throw it on and enjoy the rain and the wind.

Nice report Ash. I have an Olive Border bought new in 1981 so it is now 43 years old and it is in fine fettle. I must confess that I have never rewaxed it as in my view there is a problem in wearing the coat whilst driving as the wax gets transferred to either the cloth or leather upholstery. There is a thriving market in vintage Barbours and mine has a rare two warrant label so is still worth well in excess of the original cost. Toodle Pip.

Hello Ash, great review video. Fall is approaching here in central Minnesota as well. The end of your review made me think of my dad. He would borrow, my latest winter jacket and give it to my older brother. That’s a separate story all together. So, I’d always find myself getting a new fall/winter jacket. Sadly, both my brother and my dad are deceased now. My dad’s been gone almost 19 years now. So, thanks for jarring that memory for me. Take care.

The Beaufort (like many Barbours) has many great details that often go unnoticed but elevate it above other brands. Breathability is aided by ventilation grommets in the armpits. The front pockets are rounded, instead of rectangular: in rectangular pockets, small items get lost/stuck in the corners, whereas you can easily grab them in a rounded pocket because they settle in the middle; also corners accumulate lint and dirt, but the Beaufort pockets have drainage grommets for water/sand/grit to exit, from wet things like gloves/hats etc. The “raglan sleeves” (the way they attach at the shoulder) prevent leakage and also make it roomier - you can wear it over a thick bulky sweater/sportcoat/vest and the Beaufort will ride on top of it all nicely without making you feel like a sausage, and still have free movement at the shoulders (even better than an “action-back” norfolk-type shoulder). The velcro cuffs keep your wrists snug but can be instantly undone if you have to go into action. Details like these have much thought and experience behind them, and make much difference outdoors when your coat’s doing its job. (I’ve also heard that the zipper ring can be used as a bottle opener, but I’ve never dared to try.)

    • @Olyfrun

Great comment- I'm of the opinion that an action back without a central pleat is rarely enough without impinging on ones' silhouette.

My Barbour Beaufort is one of the many reasons (and to be honest not the least important one) why I love Autumn so much. I enjoy every aspect of the Barbour experience: wearing the jacket of course, equipping it with the lining and the hood in Winter, rewaxing it every other year in Spring, even looking at it from time to time during the exhausting Summer we're doomed to in Italy with the confidence that Autumn will come again. Nice video as always and - if may add - lovely shirt.

A great review of a great jacket. I acquired a Beaufort to celebrate early retirement and losing over 4 stone to reach my ideal weight. It is a superb jacket covering most of the seasons. The fit is perfect for me and lends itself to layering. The game pocket I use to carry a waxed canvas sit mat and has enough volume to hold a copy of The Sunday Times. For me, a worthwhile long term clothing investment.

@@MrBaertigerchristthe variation Beauforts (SLs, Anniversary Ones) all seem to have the poly sleeve lining. I think the Classic and Original models still have the tartan lining in the sleeves. Bonus point…if you have a sylkoil Classic Barbour the tartan lining is 100% cotton. If you have a normal Sage or Navy thornproof version the lining now contains some artificial fibres (so it can bobble a bit)

I bought my first Beaufort jacket at the Pembrokeshire County Show back in the early 1980s, where Barbour had a tent. Since then I've also worn a Rohan jacket that was obviously modelled on the Beaufort design, with the bellow pockets, fleece lined chest pockets, zip-in liner and zip-on hood. This cost £240 back in about 2007. Instead of waxed cotton there is a water-repellent technical outer layer combined with a breathable waterproof membrane. There's nothing anywhere these days that I can find to match this jacket.
I've just acquired a pair of Tricker's Stow boots in pull-up leather, "Winter Smoke" colour. It is an oiled leather, maintained by application of a neatsfoot oiled leather cream (from Saphir). The fact that they are also constructed with a Barbour welt, means they will go very well with the Barbour Bedale jacket that I am now considering.

A great review Ash - my first Barbour Beaufort (with hood and liner) lasted 1995 to 2020 when I took pity on a family friend who needed a jacket for dog walking in the winter - the replacement is still going strong, along with several other Barbours that have been acquired over the years, all for different purposes. I also have a Barbour travel bag that has had a donor pocket stitched to the outside by my tailor. These are really great items of clothing and surprisingly they command amazing prices at auctions and in second-hand shops!

I acquired my Beaufort off Ebay a couple of years ago for AUD200, it was a previously unworn version that was nearly 20 years old. Pristine zippers/studs and in the original check (full length) with cotton sleeve linings. After wearing it for a while, it fits like an old friend and is my favourite outdoors jacket for winter and those cooler days in autumn/spring. They are not so commonly seen here in Australia (Driza-Bone is the norm), and people and friends have often commented on styling and utility. A big plus that I find in this jacket are the high cut armholes as they provide for an excellent range of movement of the arm. I am yet to apply any wax to this jacket as I rather like the patina that has developed throughout the material. It gives it that "lived in" look -> which it actually is !!!
    Another excellent video Ash.
    Carry on Sir!

I actually used to enjoy the re-wax process ! Always think you buy cheap you buy twice! How many conventional jackets would a Barbour outlast over 20+years ! It's a classic bargain ! Have a pair of Meindl walking boots that are older than my son , he's 21 and like your jacket he's accidentally " borrowed" them. Think Meindl have been going for a couple of centuries. It's great seeing some companies still in business making quality classic products that last when so many have in built short lifespans and are just after our money every couple of years.

Interestingly, my Bedale does have the nylon lining you described. For your US viewers, the same repair and reproofing services are offered out of New Hampshire. in fact, when a front snap went missing (I don't believe your son was involved) they reinstalled one while I waited (a.k.a. shopped) and would not accept any payment. Side note - Barbour's Wellington boot socks are the best with 3/4 merino wool. Now I have a hard time finding them though. Maybe next visit to the UK?

I have an Olive Beaufort that I bought back in 1985 when I joined the Crime Squad (the standing joke was that we all had a crime squad Barbour), it was like a uniform item.
Over the years mine has worn well and still fits me, it goes back to Barbour every 3-4 years for a re-wax, it comes back looking like new. My jacket has a different colour lining, the fleece body warmer is attached using press studs which I prefer to a zip. it has also had the sleeves lengthened by about an inch.Barbour can also add extra pockets and add leather reinforcement around the bottom of the cuffs which I had done should you ask them to.
The only drawback with a waxed jacket is that it will mark the seats in your car.

    I agree with your assessment.
My Barbour is 30+ years old, it has travelled the world with me: In the field and in the city and during multiple years of three seasons of rain, sleet, snow. It is simply the GADA coat.
I had to send it back to the factory at year 20 to be completely resealed but between year zero and year twenty I did the seam sealing myself using Barbour wax.
I have a few legacy pieces in the wardrobe - two pairs of leather boots and a couple of (now vintage) watches. If you want to buy into longevity for your purchases, Barbour is the right choice.

Hey Ash, while looking to purchase a new Barbour Beaufort last night I came across the Barbour supply field wax parka for £349 then googled it clicked shopping and very are selling the garment for a very good price of £175 so I shall have it tomorrow evening. Same 6oz cotton with fixed hood which I need as I spend most of my time outdoors. This garment is made in Bulgaria and not the northeast but I’m looking forward to many years of service from this garment. Have a great day sir.

Classic Beauforts have cotton lining in the sleeves too. I'm not sure if the regular sage and other colours have it but the anniversary model does have nylon in the sleeves. Not quite sure why.

I’ve owned my Beaufort for 40 years and to date it hasn’t had to go back to the factory, though it’s now showing some character, especially at the cuffs, so I’ll send it back to Barbour next Spring for refurbishment. I alternate it with a Schoffel and re-wax every 2-3 years to keep it perfectly waterproof. It is a little too heavy and non-wicking for summer use, but other than that it has served me incredibly well. I love that you can dress it up with a pair of brogues, or enhance function with wellington boots.

Thanks for a great review. It is a pity to notice the change of arm lining material in this recent model. I bought my Beaufort a year ago (still with a warrant from Her Majesty the Queen) and it has the tartan lining in the arms. I use mine frequently in spring and autumn on top at a sweater or a jacket while commuting to work. It goes perfectly well with both jeans and more dressed trousers. A very versatile garment that gets a beautiful patina after some use.

Enjoyed your review. I recently purchased a Barbour Classic Northumbria. Wish I had done so years ago, as, with layering in cold weather, this jacket fits my needs perfectly. I especially like the length, and bought a size up (44) to make it even bulkier! But I was disappointed when I bought a so called matching hood. Immediately returned it: although advertised as "olive", it was brown. The cotton was 6 oz. Totally incompatible. I noted that it was made in Moldova. Could that be why? PS - I have one of the few manufactured with NO Royal Warrants!

Ash, I have the Beaufort and wear it often. The zip in liner is great. I picked the Beaufort specifically as it is longer than a suit jacket so can wear it to work. I do wish the sleeves were a little longer but otherwise can’t fault it. You didn’t mention the secret feature that the zip puller can open a bottle of beer.

Good morning Ash. Great review. I own quite a few Barbour jackets including the Beaufort. I use it while shooting pheasants. I also have a nice quilted Barbour that is nice for around town and looks quite nice with a tweed waistcoat and a tie. I also have a half dozen tattersall shirts and a couple of flat caps and a large canvas game bag by Barbour. I purchased my first Barbour in 1983 the Gamefair and it is still in use with a very nice patina. 😂. Cheers Ron

I have a sage Border from 2012, had the sleeves lengthened a tad and have had some minimal tears patched here and there on the corners of pockets and placket but it looks great and adds to the cbaracter. I have mine rewaxed every year at their NC store and they always do a fantastic job. Detachable hood. I live for Fall & Winter mainly bc i get to break out my handsome Border coat. 3/4 length suits me fantastically; i think the Beaufort is just a tad too short for me (I'm 6'00"). Only thing I lack is the zip-in Gilet but will get that this year. I love the fact I have an heirloom, revered garment, that'll age well with such character and speaks gentleman.

The non fabric sleeve lining must be a recent (ish) change. Just checked my Beaufort that i bought in the Barbour shop in South Shields about 3 year (?) ago and that has the tartan lining in the sleeves. A great jacket and very useful when out in the rain when watching rugby as the jacket length is just a tad longer than a Blazer, so no wet hems. My daughter bought me the matching hood so to avoid losing it i store in the back pocket. Well worth the money.

I really enjoy your reviews and videos, Ash. As I myself am in the market for a 2nd Barbour jacket (I own a Century wax jacket which is quite fitted), I've been doing some research and was quite surprised you mentioned the polyester lining of the sleeves. I think you own the 40th Anniversary Beaufort Waxed Cotton Jacket that indeed has polyester lining in the sleeves. The regular and Classic Beaufort have cotton lining in the sleeves and thus avoid the 'sweaty arms' problem. I'll be traveling to London next week and can't wait to visit a Barbour store and try on a Beaufort and a Bedale.

Hi! Just to let you know, I've been shopping for a Barbour jacket over the past few days. When I couldn't find the style I was looking for in my size, the lady at the Leadenhall store directed me to their Covent Garden branch, which apparently has the biggest range. The Covent Garden store is in Long Acre, not far from Leicester Square tube station. Good luck!

Excellent video, Ash. By any chance did you purchase the Anniversary model?
I similarly purchased a Classic Beaufort before the summer for approximately £200. I chose the Classic, non-Anniversary model because the sleeve lining is constructed in cotton as opposed to polyester. I’m a London City dweller and wanted a model that I could wear both with a jacket underneath, as well as a t-shirt in the dryer and warmer months. The cotton aids breath ability to complement such wear.
While polyester sleeves get hotter and more sweaty, they also have the advantage of being durable as well as facilitating the donning of the jacket over a suit jacket (i.e. reduced friction).
I sized up and asked Barbour to shorten the sleeves so that I have more space around the shoulders and chest. My jacket is also therefore longer, which I like. The team were fantastic.
I’m sure that if you wanted to replace the polyester lining with cotton, the alterations team would certainly oblige.
    Best wishes,
    Ayrton

I can attest to the versatility of the Barbour Beaufort as a true 3-season jacket. With the addition of the zip-in gillet and maybe a roll neck sweater I routinely wear it during the colder parts of the winter; down at least to 10°f (-12°c) if not colder before I switch to a parka. It is truly an heirloom garment.

The Beaufort & bedale is the only 2 models I think still made in the U.K, although I have the Bedale I was before debating whether to get the Beaufort instead. In the end went with Bedale cause of the sleeve lining being cotton making it more breathable since I have the Ogston which has polyester lining makes me sweat buckets. I also got a lining on discount & I keep it on for warmth for living in a colder place & when the jacket get super wet the cotton lining also start to feel wet but the quiltlining stop that feeling but the sleeves falls victim. The Ogston is now more like my into town winter/cold fall jacket since I sweat less in cold & bedale is a fall warm winter jacket to town or work.

I paid £70 for my wax jacket a few years ago.. Brand is Oxford Blue made by Halley Stevensons of Scotland. This is the one the Queen sells at Sandringham. It's a wonderful coat and fitted me better than a Barbour. I'm more of a muscular build so found more room to the Oxford Blue meaning I could layer underneath, better. I would advise gents to look around. There are good deals out there, don't necessarily restrict yourself to Barbour or Orvis. Try on. Get the right fit for you.

I have both a Barbour Beaufort and a Northumbria jacket from 1990's. The Beaufort is essentially a Steve McQueen style International with a leather collar. The Northumbria is an original pattern in heavyweight thornproof waxed cotton. Both jackets have the optional pile winter lining that is absolutely essential for winter use as they are remarkably uninsulated even for moderate cold weather. The major problem I find with the Barbour jackets is their lack of durability especially where the wax cotton folds at the cuffs and pockets. I had a Belstaff Lincoln wax jacket prior to the Barbours and it was significantly more durable in this respect although the lining disintegrated that saw its sad demise. What I will say is that Barbour has repaired the Northumbria and I found their service to be superb, I will be sending the Beaufort to them for its repairs.

A classic. I wanted a Barbour jacket last Autumn, a British made model, but found the Beaufort (the best looking one if you ask me) was too short in the arms for me (I’m 6’3”). They make longer models, but couldn’t find somewhere local to see if the arms were longer.
They also can’t be machine washed, so will start to smell after a while. I’m not sure I’d want one in my wardrobe once Spring/Summer comes around.

Dear Ash, thank you for the video. Long time listener, first time commenter here. As much as I like the style of Barbour jackets, I have two issues with my Bedale: 1) the sleeves are too short, to the point where not only my shirt cuff, but also a bit of my sport coat sleeve is peeping out. I gather it's part of the style, but do you think it's acceptable to wear a Bedale with a sports coat despite the sleeve showing? And 2) the sleeves on my Bedale are fraying (a known problem, I heard) and soon they willl need some sort of binding, corduroy or preferably leather -- do you think it's a good option? Thank you for your help and good luck with the channel, I'm looking forward to new episodes.
