This was brilliant. I have watched several tutorials on how to make patterns and have been frustrated. You have made it click in my brain. What I appreciate the most is you explain what is happening when it doesn't work the first time or what the symbols mean such as the corner circles. I am a new convert from CS6 and let me tell you, it's quite a different animal. Everything has been put in different places, panels, or things like they don't have "save for web "in the same place, etc. thank you
I created a pattern of different-sized dots. Saved it. Showed in the swatch menu for that particular file but not in a swatch file for a new document. It also changed the size of the dots to be the same diameter. What am I doing wrong?

Swatches and patterns swatches do not transfer to a new file, you have to copy and paste the applied pattern from one document to the next
Is there any way to save/export as a .pat file?
Illustrator does not recognize a .pat extension to either save to or open from.
