Judy Garland on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
Taped & Aired: 24 June 1968
The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was taped at NBC-TV in Rockefeller Center, New York City on 24 June 1968.
Judy wore her glittering white sequined pantsuit and bright red neck scarf, which she wore for several appearance and concerts during this period but did not sing during this appearance due to a writers strike.
Judy talked about her upcoming engagement at the Garden State Art Center from 25-29 June 1968, in Holmdel, New Jersey.
She also bantered with Johnny, talked about her career, MGM, Mickey Rooney, and told some Vaudeville stories.
This appearance was Judy's first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson although her first appearance on The Tonight Show is considered to be on 29 September 1955 which devoted a segment of its show that night, from 11:45 to 11:59 p.m.

Bravo to those that left the commercials in! They really give you insight to what was the norm back in 68. Too Cool!
Though you can clearly see the affects that all the substance abuse had on her, she was still such a charming, sweet lady. It's so sad that she went through so much pain in her life.
My dad worked with Judy at the London Palladium. Because of her reputation no-one else would work with her. But we were short of cash. My dad really did NOT want to do it. But he worked with her for a long time and said she was one of the most professional people he ever worked with. On the last night she came and shook everyone’s hand and thanked them. He was shocked by the way she looked, but he’d worked with the best and always said she was in his top ten. This wasn’t that long before she died.
Johny was such a gentleman... today's "talk-show" guests would destroy this wonderful but tragic lady.... there will never be another Johny and there will never be another Judy....
She wasn't even old. yet she looked/acted like she was in her 70's. poor soul.
Judy was far stronger than she appeared. She would never have considered herself weak. If she were as weak as everyone believes she would have died at 27 and not 47. Having a chemical dependency does not mean that someone is lacking in strength. She could be a very tough woman when she had to be.
I care very little what anyone else says ... even in the final years of her life, Miss Garland was (as Carson so graciously confesses to admit) ... a truly unique performer ... the likes of which (and the level of sheer native TALENT of which) this generation, to be sure, has never even begun to experience. I am very, very thankful indeed that the 'Jean Hansen's Experience' has taken to care to up-load this show in its entirety. Once again, thank you for a professional service of real value.
She had to keep working but should have been retired; her husband blew her fortune gambling. Tragic story. She was a phenomenal star.
Johnny was so good...he knew exactly what he was doing. At first she is so nervous, then before you know it they are genuinely laughing together. SO good.
I love Judy and this was a nice interview. She did appear very nervous and out of sorts.

Yes, Johnny was wonderful. His passing marked the end of an era. There's a great tribute to him by The Kennedy Center honors here on UA-cam.
I saw her on Dick Cavett and he treated her really well and I was nervous. Cuz he's kind of Dickie sometimes. Lovely to see some of these people have such Grace and patience and kindness
Oh she is so frail and tiny. I just want to hug her. I remember the day she died. They just wore her out.
I want the US to be like this again. Minus the racial discrimination of course. I just find this era wholesome and classy.
She was a great entertainer and person. The studios did a job on her, starting when she was a kid. RIP.

Well the tobacco industry pushed their drug onto the unsuspecting public at that time. Everybody smoked and it was accepted/expected.
Carson had a lot of class; Judy was clearly out of sorts here, looks and sounds like maybe one too many tranquilizers; but he was aware of it and handled her with respect and dignity, and audiences fell in love with her, she a rare talent for touching the audiences heart.
A year after this appearance she'd be dead
Look at how thin she is, she's sick here and he knows it but is a gentleman and treats her with compassion. Watch some others interviews, they were unnecessarily cruel to her.

Agreed. Johnny does wonderfully to keep things light and optimistic. Judy had only a year left of her life here. Watching her is kind of painful because she appears so much older than she was. 😢
Judy and Mickey always glowed and smiled whenever they would talk about one another. That’s true friendship.
I dont know what is but I just cant stop watching her. It's somethig magnetic. When shes perforning its just mesmerizing. I dont feel bad about her life. They'll never be another her. Like Michael Jackson, Elvis, Prince etc some people are just born with extra doses of talent.

One more year and she would be gone. This was hard to watch. And she was only 45! She looks 60. What a shame because she had so much going for her. Extreme talent.

Watching Miss Garland is absolutely heartbreaking. Her eyes look so sad, she looks twice her age and she can barely form a sentence. What a sad and tortured life she lead. Basically everyone she came in contact with did nothing but use her. It seems her only joy in life was her children. What a tortured soul.😢

Chandrabali Sattir ... Thank you, and your points are just as interesting, re: Lucy's aggressive brand of comedy. Insightful take, indeed. Lucy wasn't slapstick, by any means (at least in the beginning), but she was the "mischievous, scheming woman," which was a niche all her own, really, and why we haven't seen another Lucy, ever. (And, sorry, Debra Messing, you ain't even on the same PLANET as Lucy.) Lucy's character was predicated upon a likable American woman in an unconventional situation (Cuban marriage!) plotting and scheming to get around her husband's rules in *conventional* American "can-do" ways. To me, that was the whole basis for her comedy, and she aced it. Vivian was the "stand in" for the TV audience ... along for the ride, but also the butt of the jokes from the unconventional couple at the center of it all. Lucy never really made squat in entertainment until she and Desi sold that unique formula at a crucial juncture. Judy, however, had already been a staggering box office, recording, and radio superstar because of her 1. Incomparable voice and 2. Her onscreen charisma and appeal. Like Lucy, Judy may not have been a Venus de Milo, but both women were pretty girls and their superstardom and charisma made them more glamorous than some of the sexpots. I just think that Judy's troubles were more magnified because post-War America did not want to even PONDER "beloved Judy" as anything less than happy, much less strung-out on pills and slashing her own throat. To her credit, after films sucked the life out of her, Judy remade herself into a female Sinatra --and became even bigger. Judy always had the movie-star glamor about her. The public loved her and happily accepted her as the female Sinatra, but only to a point. When she started dying in front of their eyes on TV talk shows, mainstream America looked away. It was too much. Lucy became ragged and sounded like a barroom pool-hustler, but whatever dignity she lost in private, America didn't see it before their eyes. She managed life better than Judy.

Always loved Judy Garland! This video kind of makes me sad.... because she didn't seem to be happy and kind of nervous. Such a wonderful woman and one of the very best entertainers of all time! RIP Miss Garland
She looks so good here in this interview, it is hard to believe within a year she would be dead.
That answer, "Retire" (when Johnny asked if there was anything she'd never been able to do, but had always wanted to do) is based in very deep, painful truth. A LOT of her problems were due to the way she was viciously overworked by studio moguls during her heyday, when they compelled her to put in endless long hours, often when she was suffering terribly from various ailments (chemically induced and otherwise), all of which contributed to and exacerbated her drug problems, stress, and depression. She was really exploited, and she never quite got over it.
David Whiteis Her problems stemmed from lack of diciplen. She wanted to be super rich, because she wouldn't have had to do shows like this to help promote herself. Even if she was super rich, she would have ended up abusing drugs alcohol. Some people have little self control, despite their great talents.
brkitdwn that's unfair. Showbiz was all she knew and she worked to feed her children. Judy was never really rich and she never learned how to manage money.
brkitdwn So you also had a mother who made you take uppers to perform when you were exhausted and downers to go to sleep after. I think that was when she was around 4 years old. I am doubtful that you would have done as well. Learn something before you speak or write. 🙁

She owed 1/2 million dollars at this time and had 3 kids, she was penniless most of her life.

Damn, Liza Minnelli looks and sound just like her! This my first time ever seeing Judy Garland as an older woman, I'm so used of seeing her in young days in The Wizard of Oz and Meet me in St. Louis. RIP Judy and Johnny

Judy had about 1 year left on this earth from this original televised date. She sadly seems timid here. Obviously a tortured soul but still greatly loved by her fans still.

Johnny's show was still being filmed in New York at this point. The Garden State Arts Center was, and is, in HOLMDEL, NJ, and still at Exit 117.

THE greatest influence on Judy was Kay Thompson who perfected her phrasing, her act and worked out ALL her wonderful movements and gestures. Kay Thompson was Liza's godmother. You will notice that 'concert Judy' is not the same performer as the simple and sublime Judy at MGM . The difference is a girl and a woman.

Yes, very. Even as a professional, I've read she had real stage fright, so that may explain her needing to warm up and relax even in an interview. But she's really very engaging.
My God, she is like a tiny frail bird here. I don't know how she did it. Performing since age 3, all of those long hours on set then working on stage to audiances of thousands and having 3 kids in the middle of a huge career.

I miss her dearly. When I sit down too today's television I am disgusted with programming. Judy and let's never forget her supporting cast have always been the best when it comes to her movies/singing. My DVR is already programmed to tape "Meet Me In St Louis" tomorrow night. Once again Judy you are missed so much!

Compare Judy here at this age to Madonna at the same age. It is apparent the toll that the studio execs took on this woman and contrasts with how Madonna is -how Judy should have been, healthy, fit and wealthy - in control of her own life. Two extremely strong women, from two different eras.

To see Judy Garland this way makes me sad but the reality the body can only take so much. You're right Len Welch - she looked age when 45 years old she should be feeling great - Hard to believe the little time she had left. I hate all those studios that started her on pills to keep her making films and downers to keep her down. It is surprised she survived these many years. I blame those horrible people that had doctors to give her uppers and downers.

In the end the pills got her. I for one am glad to have had her in some of my favorite musicals. She was easy to fall in love with.

Judy is so special. It's quite shocking to see her so frail here and as some of the comments say- like a much older lady yet only in her 40s. I wonder if Marilyn Monroe would've been the same had she got to this age. Lovely lady & talent.
Two coincidental tie-ins. The next guest was Bennett Cerf. His Random House publishing company paid Judy a $30,000 advance for her memoirs and provided her a writer. Not long after starting, she abandoned the project; Cerf sold what little was written to so-called ladies' magazines. I wonder if they met backstage... awkward. The commercial that followed was for Salem, Judy's favorite cigarette.
Wether following the yellow brick road or lamenting the one that got away her story is our collective story her star burned out too early but her legacy shines a bright light on our collective conciseness there is no place like home
