    You and Irene Rudnyk are both phenomenal fashion/portrait natural light photographers. You both use exactly the same kit and yet your styles are so distinct from each other that even I, who never photographs people, can see it. I love the subjectivity of photography and how we all see different things and you definitely had some awesome shots in this video. You said at the beginning of the video you struggle to introduce them, how about "Hey mush! I’m better than you could ever hope to be, just watch and learn!" How about it? Do you think it would work?

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 років тому +3

      Ooh that's a bit of a uhhh... strong.. intro haha I might just keep working on it and see how it naturally evolves over time ;) But thank you so much! I really love hearing your insights, I also love photography so much simply because of it's subjectivity as you mentioned! There are just so many possibilities and no rights and wrongs 😊

      Julia Trotti Just be yourself, say what you are doing and then let your camera speak for you. I don’t know if you look at many other portrait/fashion photographers on UA-cam, but you are definitely up there with the best. Even though I don’t photograph people I watch a lot of portrait channels because you see the light more in portraits and that can then be transferred to still life. You work the light as good as anyone in any genre, which somehow I doubt you’ll accept, and once you work through all the comments about your looks that’s what people want to learn. You are better than you know, there’s beautiful shots of ladies, there’s shots of beautiful ladies, you take beautiful shots of beautiful ladies (and men). You have a great channel and it’s obvious how passionate you are about your craft and that you want to share that passion and to me that’s far more important than a great intro.

    5:38 with the lens flare is soooo gorgeous! I am really excited to try out the backlighting on the hair. I tried out an 85mm this past weekend and I'm kind of obsessed. I like that you can open the aperture a bit to get some more background but it also allows you to collapse the background to make the person really pop. Thank you so much for your incredible videos.

    Hi Julia, it looks like this was a Golden Hour shoot which Maddie and I plan to do. I was also interested in this video because you are using an 85mm lens. I am selling to old Canon EF lenses and hope to use that money to defray the cost of that new lens. We are planning the Golden Hour shoot if it ever cools down as its been so hot. It will be an evening shoot as I can't get her up that early so, I'll take evening.
    I have a 18-55mm, 75-300mm, 50mm and this would be my 4th lens. I have never shot with the sun behind the model until I ran into your videos and I was shocked how much I love them! I did notice in Golden Hour that you did take some sun into her face and I am guessing it was because how warm the color is on the skin ; I will try that. I did really struggle with my new 50mm and the shots were all bad. I feel i know what I did wrong.. I did not reprogram the camera (Canon Rebel SL2) when I went from my 70 to 300mm zoom to the 50mm fixed lens. And...I had the servo "on". I also shot in Aperture Mode as it seems you do. I had the camera set for the zoom and to its lowest AP mode so the Camera was not instructed to lower to the 50mm F1.8. Last i was using the screen to compose and it appears you prefer using the view finder and YES..I was NOT focusing on her eyes but rather the whole scree. So I am learning.
    I am trying to NOT let all this new information overwhelm me but I have a young lady that is NOT a model, loves to pose, is super photogenic and I just want to capture better shots. I would love you to fly over here and do a shoot with her.. (in my dreams) I just need to give her more proper direction in a shoot. But thank you Julia for all I am learning...

      I thought the exact same thing. A video with a regular person would be more informative. Shooting a very attractive girl that does almost all the poses, without instruction, is like playing a game on "novice".

    Your thumbnail photo is gorgeous Julia .
    Amazing work .
    Just a couple days ago Julia , you had 6.8K subs.
    Today , *7.2K* subs here on You Tube. Congratulations .
    Not to long ago you were under the 5 mark.
    I know you most likely don't care about the subs , but it is a testament to , not only excellent work,
    but to the person you are.
    You're going to get very busy with comments Julia.
    Eventually as you grow, and you will here, some of the comments left will be a little , well I am sure you know.
    Don't let them dissuade you from what you love doing .
    My suggestion, block them.
    You've always responded back to us with wonderful replies to our comments.
    That won't be as easy to do going forward.
    We'll understand this.
    The whole hearted comment is a great tool.
    I will say, it's nice to get on the ground floor with a winner.
    Like getting into a band before they go huge.
    _I wish you all the best that life has to offer_
    _and may that be all ahead of you_
    _very merry holidays_

      Hey, yep I change all my camera settings manually throughout a shoot. I think there are a few shots throughout this video where you can see me putting my model in a location, taking a photo, looking at the picture, adjusting the settings and then start shooting. • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 років тому

      Thank you! I personally would choose the 50mm over the 85 as I find the 50mm would be more versatile overall. But it really depends on what other lenses you have, what you're upgrading from and what you shoot mostly! For me, when I had to purchase my first lens, I got the 50mm as I knew it would be versatile for different situations: portrait, fashion, travel, weddings, etc. But then one of the other first lenses I got was the 85mm because I wanted to get more into portrait photography and loved the look of the lens for that. I hope that helps!

    ive noticed depending on your photoshoots you tend to keep the same settings on your camera the same is that just by choice??
    besides the fact you know what your doing im just curious !!!

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 років тому +1

      That's why I like to shoot in Manual mode instead of auto or aperture priority, etc, because I adjust my settings for the lighting conditions and all my photos turn out the same, which make post processing so much faster and easier for me. I only change my settings when the lighting conditions change, so usually when we move into a new spot!

    Hi Julia, I love your picture so much. I love color in your picture. I can't set color like your picture by my cannon 750D. Example: at 3:36, The color is amazing, Could you tell me how to do that. You did that with Picture style, lens or lightroom... Please me!. thank so much. Love every video

      Thank you so much! I shoot in standard picture profile and then I use my Lightroom Presets to change the colours of my photos. That photo you linked me to was edited with my Disposable Film Lightroom Preset: www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets/#/disposable-film-lightroom-preset/ and if you have a look there, I have a lot of different filters to change the way an image looks :)

    What was the white balance settings? Do you always keep it in Auto? And I assume you had ISO 100?

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 років тому

      I always keep my white balance on manual so it doesn't change in between every shot :) And yes, I normally keep my ISO as low as possible - so 100 during these outdoor photoshoots!

    Great video, Julia! Just out of curiosity, as I've never shot with an aperture that wide - are you doing a focus and recompose method for these shots or is there another technique you use/prefer for portraits with very wide (1.2 - 1.8) apertures? Thanks for your time :)

    Julia at 5:32 how did you get that rainbow effect on the lens?

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 років тому

      The Canon 85mm 1.2 is notorious for creating these rainbow lens flares when shooting backlit :) None of my other lenses really do this!

      Yes, but I only use them to protect my lenses - not to change the way a photo looks :)
