@@mahteef how lol. Ofc shes showing her photos as examples (hint: its what her channel is all about bozo), and explains why to shoot backlit, pros and cons, what it means and how it affects your photos. If you didn't get anything out of this video, you have a learning disability.
Hi Julia, I am a recent graphic design graduate and am helping my partner's sister build up her brand. She asked me for a photoshoot for her website, and I offered to help. I've got the most beautiful native australian park behind where I live, but I've never really done portrait shoots. With just 15 minutes before she arrived, I quickly looked up outshoot photography and landed on this video - such a lifesaver, and I feel that I have some absolutely gorgeous shots as a result of your tips. I have no idea that shooting into the light is the way to go, I would naturally have done the complete opposite! A big thank you - thought i'd just share my story with you, as I know I enjoy hearing it from my clients too :) Have a great day!
The ability to use backlighting as well as you do is one of the things that makes you stand out from other photographers, the only person I think comes close is Irene Rudnyk. Done wrong it isn’t the best look which I have discovered when photographing wildlife from a hide (blind). For landscapes we often shoot the light source itself with sunsets and sun stars. In those situations, when we want the foreground the be exposed correctly we bracket shots. With seascapes a reverse grad is the world’s greatest invention. Another great video as always and Im really pleased you’ve got a sponsor now. For what I consider to be one of the best channels for understanding photography, talking sense and appreciating light you are massively undersubscribed.
I almost never comment on UA-cam vids, but you deserve serious kudos for this tutorial. I’ve searched for awhile for tutorials on this subject and everyone always leaves it so many important details. Thank you for being thorough and going over how and where to meter on the subject and then the tip of under exposing and bringing it back in post.
You have no idea the happiness and how my day is made when I get a notification that you have uploaded a video! Saturday I spent my day watching every single one of your videos! I remember reading a comment from a year ago that said “how do you only have 2,000 subscribers when you’re so great?” You’re just amazing Julia!
I totally agree with you, Julia. I take pictures with backlight and I definitely underexpose at least one stop. Regarding the post-production, I totally agree with you. Thank you for sharing Julia! I am happy to see photographers who use the same technique as I do.
You are definitely my favorite female photographer ! Your contents are always improving and you are such a huge inspiration to lots of amateur photographers out there :D
Seems like one of the most advanced techniques of photography, yet you made it extremely easy to comprehend! This is one of the best videos about photography, EVER!
The more I do portrait photography the more I find myself using this backlit technique. Your photos always look so well lit, and I think I’m subconsciously just trying to emulate that lol. Thanks for all your tutorials and keep up the great work!
I am thankful to see your channel. I've been working as a portrait photographer for quite some time and your work makes me inspired to go out and shoot more projects. You are so generous to share your amazing talent thanks so much!
8:00 yeah i think it is really important to not "destroy" your photo with HDR looks. In my opinion HDR really takes away the mood of a picture. Great work as usual Julia :)
I just love your tutorials and how to the point they are. Love the before and after shots as well. You’re definitely my favorite photographer to watch & learn from on UA-cam! Thank you for sharing!
these past few days i have been watching your videos non stop and i have learned so many things from you. i have tried high frequency/low frequency editing in photoshop for the first ever tome and i have also learned how to focus quickly for moving subjects, and i have learned so much!
Thank you for this video. I have always loved back lit photos but always felt I needed a fill flash or reflector which is tough since I am usually alone (no assistant). Great tips. I would definitely love to see more videos like this. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE how you include examples when explaining. ❤️👍🏼📷
Thanks, I am going to have a go at backlight photography, and your videos are really well structured and give great information about what needs to be done. I love how you do not over complicate things, and have good simple steps people can try out.
You are a refreshing teacher of your craft. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in a way that is so easy to grasp. I look forward to taking what I have learned from you in this backlighting tutorial and practice, practice, practice!!!🌞
I'm on the same page most of the time. I do shoot for B&W so there are times I need the harsh light to create the edginess in my images. That being said even then I do like to implore back lighting but with some type of reflector so I can get the look I am trying to achieve. AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR YOUR KEEN INSIGHTS! I love your work!
If you’re shooting back lighting, wear black to not affect your subject’s colour and reflection in their eyes. If you wear a bright colour it can make your subject have a slight bit of your clothes’ colour. Only applies to shooting closer up with a wide lens
Reflectors and natural reflectors work well. I also use a speed light either on or off camera with a defuser manually set correct exposure, or sometimes -1 stop. Whatever works for you.
Great video!!! There are so many long photography tutorials on youtube explaining the exact same thing, however you manage to cram both gear, shooting and editing into one video in under 10 minutes and yet it all makes so much sense! Loved it!😊👍🏻
Have a photo shoot coming up once we get some green on the trees and I’m totally using this. Thank you for the video and information. I’m newer to photography and your videos are a great resource for me
I‘ve learnt so much from you, Julia! I‘m already experienced with LR and photography but still there are some knowledge gaps that you fill with your videos. Much love from Germany 😇❤️
Thank you so much for making these videos, it inspires me every time I watch them and gives me the information I want without it being overwhelming, which I find happens to me when I am watching other photography videos online... and then I get discouraged....but You make it so easy to understand and you share all of your methods and camera information ... definitely gives a novice like myself confidence to continue on the portrait photography journey 💕 thank you so much Julia! Please keep these videos coming! They're truly a joy 🙌🏼
Great tutorial as usual. I photographed my classmate with 85mm f/1.8 at 1/100 so her face and background were totally overexposed but it did look cool and dreamy. I see that you use much faster shutter speeds so I'll give it another try thanks
that was good advice with using natural elements as a reflector for at least the face....I often forget to look around for them, when I am in the zone with some beautiful backlight in front of a good background :)
I love your photography, but your voice is one of my two favorite female photogs (shout out to Irene as the other). I could listen to your channel for hours while I work (and I do)
Thank you so much for making this (and other) videos available. I learned a lot about back light - natural reflector and post. Please contine your photo work as it is amazing
I have one video about the lenses I use while photographing a wedding: ua-cam.com/video/LUsCaJopSSs/v-deo.html but I would love to make more wedding photography related videos soon :D
Thanks alot Julia for taking time explaining yr technics and tips. Im a begginer and apperciate yr style and the way explain things. Yr a great photographer and great person.
So glad I found your UA-cam channel. My photography is similar to your style and love all your tips and tricks. I also like to use natural reflectors too. I have a white blanket that I bring and lay on the ground sometimes to help light reflect.
I've always wanted to know how this technique works. I will certainly practice on my next photoshoot. You are my favorite photographer Julia, you're such a inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing
Hey, Julia! I'm a complete newbie with cameras, just got my first camera like 2 weeks ago, the Canon M50. Took it out for a walk for the first time yesterday and took about 80 pictures during golden hour, and to be honest out of all the 80 pictures there were only 3 really really good, which kind of upset me a little bit. I hope this rate will improve with time, but your content is really helpful, so thank you! Leaving a like and subscribing!
I’m so glad I found you! I love this back lighting video.... it really sums it all up and I plan to watch every video of yours. I already started a play list and started adding your videos..... please keep the videos coming..... I haven’t watched all of them so I’m not sure if you cover this but if you could explain how you get your settings.... sometimes when I shoot wide open at F2 and maybe 200 iso, I can’t get my shutter speed to go up past like 1/60. What can I be doing wrong? Do I have a setting wrong on my camera? I’m shooting in full Manuel mode and that shutter speed is a big pain
Love your photos, never miss any of your videos! ❤️So interesting and explained really well. Can’t wait for the next video and more tips! Also, would like to see a video on cameras, your favorites and why? 😉
a) you're so pretty- you could be one of those models/photographer combo deals lol b) love these tips and insight c) more wedding photography tips please d) you should be an audio book reader... you've voice/accent is awesome!
Thanks for the clear tutorial and informative video. I'm going to check out your other videos. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the background sound/music. I was trying hard to concentrate on what you were saying and the extraneous sound was distracting.

Great great video. Question though, which metering do you use? Is it spot metering? Thank you.
My guess is spot metering on the face for correct exposure then she stops down -1 or -2
Great video! Very helpful and relaxed. Please keep it up! .Thank you Julia!

What metering mode do you use for backlit portraits? Do you ever get any lens flare when shooting backlit I seem to get a lot.
Great video and images.
