This song is every mantra I say to myself when I’m feeling depressed. Focus on gratitude, servitude, sincerity, and look don’t take it all too seriously.
on the surface the lyrics are really optimistic but the anxiety inducing guitar riff gives off a really overwhelming sense of dread and makes the lyrics seem more ironic, almost as if the vocalist is trying to kid himself on that everything's fine, backed by the beach boys-esque vocal harmonies and doo wop adlibs that youd typically find in a much more up beat song
The atonal, the vocal disharmony ,the insistent guitar riff, it ain't the Picture This, the sweethearts Kodaline, and it ain't a begrudge. It's just, the country went through 10 years of an Ireland collapse after the financial crisis. Could ye not write a fucking rock song, no? Nice to see the likes of the Fontaines reflect at least an essence of the societal psychosocial disaster.

In 2019, Fontaines D.C. made their debut with "Dogrel," an album that managed to capture the audience's attention with its energetic punk sound and direct, fiery lyrics. In their second album, "A Hero's Death," the Irish band chose to embark on a new, more mature and reflective path. The central theme of the record is the human condition, with all its contradictions and vulnerabilities. In "A Hero's Death," Fontaines D.C. delve deep within themselves with a sense of yearning, but they are not surrendering nihilists. They find something precious at the bottom of their fears and use it to rise and see a glimmer of light. A Change in Perspective In their first album, Fontaines D.C. focused on their hometown, Dublin, and its culture. In "A Hero's Death," however, the perspective broadens to embrace universal themes. The gritty streets and restless characters of Dublin are still present but now serve as a starting point to explore the anxieties of the human soul. A More Mature Sound Fontaines D.C.'s sound has also evolved. "Dogrel" was an energetic and straightforward punk album. "A Hero's Death," on the other hand, is a more mature record with a more diverse and complex sound. Fontaines D.C. have moved away from the raw punk tones to embrace a more refined sound that incorporates elements of post-punk, rock, and folk. A Substantial Album "A Hero's Death" is a substantial album that confirms Fontaines D.C.'s talent. The Irish band has managed to grow and mature without losing their anger and poetry. There's a career's moment in some bands that nothing, nothing can go wrong. That's the moment of Fontaines DC. Peak of the hill, this is rock'n'roll relevant, raw, brilliant
The worst thing about music in 2020 is the need for people to do this. Go look up any modern punk band and the comments are full of people who are so used to everything being neatly pigeon holed that they can't help themselves from doing this. It's always the same bands being mentioned. Go seek out a Viagra Boys song and check the comments. "Oh they sound like The Fall! They sound like Joy Division! They sound like Iggy Pop!" Blah blah blah blah blah. Fontaines DC sound like Fontaines DC, nothing else needs to be said.
Wow. One song cured your depression huh?... millions of dollars, humans treated as lab rats, decades of research and development and you found a cure that is free and accessible to all?
A lot of folks seem to miss the point of this song. It's not a mantra about how life is great. Rather its about how life being good, comfortable, and being a decent human being isn't enough. It's about how accepting the notion of "life ain't always empty" leads to the end of ambition. It's why the last fantastic refrain of this song goes against being safe. Against being thankful. And how we have to die a heros death to truely live. Being a decent person isn't enough. Fight the power.
My fave band of now, great music and lyrics, pure poetry. I hear Joy Division, The Cure and Iggy Pop in their music. Seen at Lytham festival, bought all their albums on Vinyl, booked tickets to see em in Leeds in November. Love em

One year later after your post NME make them `Best Band in the World`, it`s hard to argue with that, all competition considered in this time in recent years, decades even in rock history. This band could easily survive in an earlier era when they would have had some serious gifted bands to deal and compete with, but unfortunately the state of real inventive talent is so rare it gives these boys a clear run, absolutley no competition in this sad 2022.
