when people with accent sing usually the accent disappears bc its different than speaking. we make different shapes and movements with our mouth when singing compared to talking, therefore accent is less noticable. but with "speaksinging" ofc its different. so, the singing without accent is usually not on purpose

    MORE CONTEXT TO THE LYRICS:
“The second single from their upcoming third record Skinty Fia, ‘I Love You’ is described by Fontaines' frontman Grian Chatten as “the first overtly political song we’ve written”. Written from the perspective of an Irishman abroad who is “enjoying great personal success and a sense of cultural pride”, the subject “simultaneously metabolises deep disappointment, and swirling anger, at the current political climate as well as the country’s grimmest historical atrocities, such as the decades of tragic brutality at the Tuam Mother and Baby Home in Galway”.

Lyrics: I love you, I love you, I told you I do
It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well
And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune
To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb
I've eddied the heart now from Dublin to Paris
And if there was sunshine it was never on me
So close the rain, so pronounced is the pain
    Yeah
Well I love you, imagine a world without you
It's only ever you, I only think of you
And if it's a blessing, I want it for you
If I must have a future, I want it with you
System in our hearts, you only had it before
You only opened the window, never opened up the door
And I love you, I love you, told you I do
Selling genocide and half cut pride I understand
I had to be there from the start, I had to be the fucking man
It was a clamber of a life I sucked the ring off every hand
Had em plying me with drink, even met with their demands
When the cherries lined up I kept the spoilings for myself
'till I had 30 ways of dying looking at me from the shelf
    A cloud-parting smile I had, a real good child I was
But this island's run by sharks with children's bones stuck in their jaws
Now the morning's filled with cokeys tryna talk you through it all
Is their mammy Fine Gael and is their daddy Fianna Fáil?
And they say they love the land but they don't feel it go to waste
Put a mirror to the youth and they will only see their face
Makes flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die
Say it to the man who profits and the bastard walks by
And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by
Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry
    Would I lie?
I love you, I love you, I told you I do
It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well
And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune
To be here lovin' you when I'm in the tomb
System in our hearts, you only had it before
Echo, echo, echo, the lights they go
The lights they go, the lights they go
    Echo, echo
Selling genocide and half-cut pride I understand
I had to be there from the start I had to be the fucking man
It was a clamber of a life, I sucked the ring off every hand
Had em plying me with drink, even met with their demands
And I loved you like a penny loves the pocket of a priest
And I'll love you till the grass around my gravestone is deceased
And I'm heading for the cokeys, I will tell them 'bout it all
About the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil
And now the flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die
Say it to the man who profits and the bastard walks by

Every context obviously has it’s differences and historical/cultural peculiarities but I feel we’re all tied by a thread across borders, generationally.. although some Fontaines songs do require additional context for the non-Irish, these sentiments are universal and gives many a vein of solidarity. What a powerful song. As an Irishman it describes something in our nature, and maybe in the nature of everyone, no matter where you come from. You can leave Ireland but it never leaves you. And there's always that love/hate relationship where you love the ideal, but hate how greed and egos have ruined your perception of the country. Maybe I'm biased but I think there's something special about Ireland though, and I can't put my finger on it. We're a nation of immigrants, historically, and maybe that's why I understand the people that travel to Ireland to live here and to make a living, and feel an affinity with them. But any time I've left, it's always been on my mind, like a missed lover.

The brightest minds of our generation, from artists to scientists have been steadily leaving Russia for a better future, there's a huge wave of immigration right now. Saw the lads yesterday night in Italy. I feel a deep connection with Ireland and I think irish and italians are somewhat similar. When they played this song I cried out in anger. I love my country, but I hate it with all my heart since nothing ever seems to get better. Maybe I hate it so much because there is too much love involved. Thank you Fontaines DC for this masterpiece.

Fontaines D.C touched a nerve rue for most of Gen Z I reckon, regardless of what country you live in. There has always been division in politics but never more so than now it seems... both political groups in the United States at least (speaking for myself) are starting to look mighty similar to each other. Preying on feelings of nationalism and the citizen's deep desire for stability, yet never offering solutions to our biggest issues. Slapping band-aids on the cuts of deep, festering wounds. Fontaines D.C is the voice of our generation globally.

he's singing about ireland. in my eyes, the quieter verses reflect his simple but pure love for his homeland, and the beauty that it brings, but the shouted ones show how complicated and agonizing it is to love a country so inbred with problems at the hands of the system. it would be easier not to love it at all than see it go to waste.

This album cannot drop soon enough. This song in particular is just hitting so hard for me right now. For the first time in my life I've found true love. This woman is everything to me and I can't tell her enough how much I love her. This force is just so powerful, so foreign to me. I don't even fully grasp it just yet. I just feel it. Boy can it overwhelm too. Especially when she tells me it's the same for her. It's terrifying, but simultaneously the greatest gift I've had in this life.
Yesterday I fell into the darkness, I succumbed to old demons. Insecurities took hold of my mind, fear ran rampant. I got caught in my head, thinking over and over I'm not good enough for her. Undeserving of a love like ours. I feared losing her, it felt like I already had in my mind. I cried because I was heartbroken, devestated at the thought of a life without her. I spoke to her and she comforted me. Offered words of affirmation, reassuring me. Reiterated the reality of the matter, we're gonna grow old together. She's my love, my best friend, my family, and one day she'll be my wife. We'll have kids and lead a happy life together. She picked me back up from the depths I found myself in. Told me that I'll have her for a lifetime. She put me back together and one day I'll be there to do the same for her when she's feeling low.
I cannot thank her enough for all she does for me, for loving me. For accepting me. I love you Jamila, always and forever.

And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by
Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry
    Would I lie?
I love you, I love you, I told you I do
It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well
And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune
To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb
System in our hearts, you only had it before
Echo, echo, echo, the lights, they go
The lights, they go, the lights, they go
    Echo, echo
Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand
I had to be there from the start, I had to be the fucking man
It was a clamber of the life, I sucked the ring off every hand
Had 'em plying me with drink, even met with their demands
And I loved you like a penny loves the pocket of a priest
And I'll love you 'til the grass around my gravestone is deceased
And I'm heading for the cokeys, I will tell 'em 'bout it all
About the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil
And now the flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die
Say it to the man who profits, and the bastard walks by
And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by
Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry
    Would I lie?

omg i've been listening to this tune for days now, thinking it was likely from 80s or something, only to discover today this album is from 2022 🤯 I'm so glad cause that might give me a chance to see them live

I just can’t get over how talented these lads are. They just keep evolving while keeping their special sound. They evoke the spirit of our great Irish poets with their beautiful lyrics. They are uniquely Irish without being twee. They are modern with a nod to some amazing bands like joy division, stone roses etc.

    lyrics :
I love you, I love you, I told you I do
It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well
And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune
To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb
I've eddied the heart now, from Dublin to Paris
And if there was sunshine, it was never on me
So close, the rain, so pronounced is the pain
    Yeah
Well, I love you, imagine a world without you
It's only ever you, I only think of you
And if it's a blessing, I want it for you
If I must have a future, I want it with you
System in our hearts, you only had it before
You only open the window, never open up the door
And I love you, I love you, told you I do
Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand
I had to be there from the start, I had to be the fucking man
It was a clamber of the life, I sucked the ring off every hand
Had 'em plying me with drink, even met with their demands
When the cherries lined up, I kept the spoilings for myself
'Til I had thirty ways of dying looking at me from the shelf
Cloud-parting smile I had, a real good child I was
But this island's run by sharks with children's bones stuck in their jaws
Now the morning's filled with cokeys tryna talk you through it all
Is their mammy Fine Gael and is their daddy Fianna Fáil?
And they say they love the land, but they don't feel it go to waste
Hold a mirror to the youth and they will only see their face
Makes flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die
Say it to the man who profits, and the bastard walks by
And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by
Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry
    Would I lie?
I love you, I love you, I told you I do
It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well
And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune
To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb
