Someone posted that Bonham would have laughed at Ringo, Keltner, etc. Here's the deal; drummers are a tight group. I am one and have played for close to 30 years. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and I will tell you, Chester Thompson, one of the great drummers in the world, told me that Ringo was great. Drummers know it. It's the public that has a problem with his down the middle style.

    • @mikkysteaders

I am glad you mentioned Chester Thompson, one of my favourite drummers. He was brilliant when he helped out Genesis on their live gigs, Frank Zappa and Steve Hackett too. Another humble drummer.
Btw, I love Ringo, no doubt about it. I have played drums for about 10 years now, though most people would say I am a bassist/guitarist, my Dad (who was a drummer in the 70's and 80's) still refers to me as a drummer too.
However when I listen to Beatles songs like 'Rain', 'She Said She Said' and 'It's All Too Much' I do question myself as to whether I am any good... I mean Ringo played some very complex stuff, but got overshadowed by the other three... Some of the drum fills have such odd timings... Heck even songs like Firth Of Fifth or Cinema Show by Genesis have easier drums (in my opinion).
I love The Beatles for everything they have given us :) Peace out!

Ringo is the king, most modern rock drumming is rooted in his playing. The most important thing in rock is that backbeat. Nobody does it like Ringo.
Other guys play much more complex stuff. But even those guys agree that Ringo is a king. Where he lacks intricate chops, he always has the right part for the song. Always kicks that bassline in the right spot. Perfect fills, simple and clear. The Beatles would have sounded like crap with a guy like Bonham or Moon pounding away..
Listen to Ringo's parts. Incredible. Musical. His drumming makes your ass move. That's a real drummers job- accent the music, make the asses move.
When I was younger I felt that way about Charlie Watts - boring boring boring. Later I came to understand that it takes discipline to stay out of the way, and play the music instead of just waiting to get your shit in.

Somebody posted that these 3 three drummers were "amateurs"???? Jim Keltner an "amateur"?? Henry Spinnetti an "amateur"?? Ringo was the BEATLES drummer: an "amateur"?? Bonzo would have had GREAT time watching this. These 3 guys had a great time! LOVE this tune.

What an astute camera operator to notice and hone in on the eye contact at 3:33. That kind of connection is the heart of ensemble performance.

When I was 8 or 9, the Beatles were reaching the top and Ringo was my inspiration to play the drums. Over 50 years later, he still is. His left-handed, right hand kit style blows me away and what a great timekeeper. Being married to Barbara Bach doesn't hurt his reputation either.

When you think about it -- all those Beatles recordings that still hold up today - Ringo was the foundation as the drummer - listen to his drumming on A DAY IN THE LIFE - brilliant - and watch the concert film The Beatles Washington DC 1964 and you see and hear the Ringo the others fell in love with as a drummer - it is preserved on film - he plays amazing!

In that Wash, D.C. show Ringo really showed what kind of drummer he was on that last number Long Tall Sally. Just unbelievable drumming. The other 3 knew he was good, hence the firing of Pete Best.

I loved hearing from Ringo, Ray Cooper and Jim Keltner. Disappointed not to hear a few words from Henry Spinetti, though to be fair, we did see a decent segment of him playing in this video. He's done great drumming with an impressive list of artists including Joan Armatrading, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and plenty more.

Think if you watch the concert DVD the drummer who is "on" all the time is Henry. Just saw him this week doing the Gary Brooker tribute night and again he was faultless. BTW Just learned Henry was the drummer on Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street".

What people can't seem to get thru their THICK skulls is...Ringo was PERFECT for the Beatles. Ringo is a human metronome, he keeps absolutely perfect timing, his fills are one of kind and he's a fucking GREAT drummer...Charlie Watts was perfect for the Stones, Bonzo for Zeppelin, Keith Moon for the Who....shut up already about Ringo...fer crissakes

But would anything from the Led Zepplen style of drumming fit any of the songs they are doing here? I don't think so. I would bet that Bonzo himself had respect for these guys as it is usually is only the fans who disrespect professional drummers like these guys. People sometimes will put down for example, Ringo, for playing with another drummer and in this case there were actually three drummers playing together, plus percussion players, but these guys all play in time together, and it fits.

Another type of drummer, nothing to do with any of those who play here. Better or worse is very subjective but Bonzo was a rock drummer exclusively and unorthodox, to my taste he doesn't even enter my top 30.
