I just found your channel and this is ADORABLE. I agree that it has a really nice, vintage feel to it. I think it would be a really cute yarn for crochet stuffed animals or anything knit/crocheted in the round. I imagine this would make an adorable kid's scarf, too.

I've been thinking about figuring out self-striping yarn. First, decide on your target garment. Then you have to knit a sample in the bare yarn to the desired width/length of your stripe. Unravel the knitting and measure the yarn. From there, determine the length of your Hank by how many rows and how many colors. Narrower or wider rows are figured using, gasp, math.

I've not been with you since the beginning of the Chemknit's channel, but I've enjoyed the ride! I found the channel shortly after the kickstarter ended. Anywho, thanks for the encouragement to dye yarn to get specific colors for a project, or just to play and see "what happens if..." And thank you for providing videos on cotton and non-wool yarn!
Future video idea - breaking violet (or any other food coloring) on a yarn cake. I rewatched the video on breaking violet on a sock blank donut, and I assume the way the colors struck in the inside of the donut would be similar to what would happen in a cake, but the end result would look different due to differences in how the yarn is neat and orderly in a sock black vs the more organic organized chaos that is a yarn cake. I hope that made sense. Again, thank you for being an inspiration!

I use that 6 meter skein for dyeing stripes and knit it up on a 72 cylinder on my sock machine. Ii always figure that 6 meters will give me 6 rows, and calculate from there - two colors will give me 3-row stripes, 3 colors will give me 2-row stripes, 6 colors (like you did here) will give me 1-row stripes.
I sought out Koolaid dyeing tutorials today, because I’ve never done it, and I live in the town that is the birthplace of Koolaid. It just seems like something I should try.

I remember a few years ago I wound off a skein into 5 mini skeins all attached by winding them around the legs of an upside down tv table 40 times for each mini skein hahahahaha anyway, it worked and I did a gradient from one colour. I'm so glad it was helpful! I wish I had the capacity to show more swatches in my videos but since I'm the only one involved in the process and I dye hundreds of colorways a year the time adds up. I do try to show swatches for self striping colorways because I think seeing how long each color section is in stitches can help.

This is awesome! I’ve always struggled with dyeing yarn as I prefer stripes vs variegated & didn’t know how to do that. I thought the only way to get stripes was to buy/make a sock blank. & even with that the stripes would only be as long as the blank. This opened a whole new world of striped dyeing ideas. Thank you.

I love your ombre dyes. It’s also fascinating to learn about dyes, chemicals, yarns, ‘breaking’ colors, and a million other things. I still haven’t had the courage to dye with anything but tea, but I did buy koolaid, liquid food dyes & two dylon/RIT-type dyes, gosh, over a year ago now. Now I’m more ready to try them because I know how to do stripes! Yea!

I dyed the May Knit Crate Yarn from your Knit Crate tutorial. It looks fantastic! I divided my two skeins into 4 so that I have a mini skein set.
Wonderful! Miniskeins are such a great way to play with different techniques and explore. I made one 100 g skein stretch for 20-30 different projects (tiny tiny mins - some were only 3 g!)

Hi Rebecca! I don't know I missed this one! And I found Wilton's Colour Right collection up here in Oshawa Ontario Canada! In Walmart!!!! And for under $40! And here I had been searching the net trying to find it up here, but all I could find was the gel, and they had a good collection of the gels, unless I ordered through your website. Even Amazon in Canada or US! At Walmart! Mind you, it was a different Walmart than mine, so it pays to check at another store. Like yarn! You can never get the right colours to match? And that is how I found it! Walmart!

I had planned to do more of these livestreams this year. My original plan was to do one every 6 weeks or every other month or so. But then the pandemic shifted everything. :( These are a lot more fun as a livestream because I can see people's reactions realtime. Someday these will come back!

Oh my... this makes me wish I could knit my own socks! I will try dyeing my own dishcloths first, and I know how to knit, but am not sure about socks... do you have a tutorial video about knitting socks? I have so much trouble figuring out how to work with all the needles, but the circular needles always seem too big...

If you can't find the rainbow of KoolAid then you can mix a rainbow with liquid drops. In Dyepot Weekly #35 I showed the rainbow I made for my first ever handpainted colorway.

I do however have a quick question that you may be able to answer from your experience with Kool-aid dyeing.
If you were layering colors on a twisted hank what order would you consider with the following colors - Blue, Red, Purple?
Oooo this is a good question. I might go Blue - Red - Purple. I like to go from "lightest" to darkest (red is more pigmented than purple but it the purple is less bright which is why I'd add it last.) I might also do Blue - purple - red. I'm not sure how much it matters really, but I like to be able to see a difference when I add the yarn to the pot.
Hi, I live in the UK (Wales 🏴), I’ve always wanted to have a go at dying my own yarn and just by chance I have found your channel. I love your enthusiasm and the way you describe the various properties involved in the dying process. I have just watched your rainbow episode where you have used Koolaid, I am not familiar with this product as it is not something that is available here, I can see it is in powder form, is it like sherbert, or is it used to make up a drink? Hi Gloria, welcome to the channel! KoolAid is mostly found in the US, it is a powdered drink mixture (flavor, food coloring & citric acid) that you mix with water and sugar to make a punch. (For Halloween - mixing grape and orange with some gingerale makes a very spooky looking punch! lol.)
I'm not sure about in Europe, but in Australia cordials were simlar but those were already concentrated in liquid form and then we'd mix them in with water.
There is another type of KoolAid in the US, one that has sugar mixed in already and comes in a tub so you can measure out a smaller serving. These packets usually make a whole pitcher.
Is the koolaid dye, long lasting?

I've dyed super bulky before I believe. And roving, although that is not technically yarn. I mostly dye fingering/dk though.

I was wondering to remove some of the extra liquid from the washed yarn ... could we put the skein in a delicates lingerie bag and put in a normal dryer on low heat gentle for a few minutes just to remove some of the extra water ? If so.. how many minutes do u recommend in the dryer?

The zip ties have been interesting. I started with white (clearish) zip ties but mine have absorbed color from dyes over time so they look dark. Amazon shifted the listing to the ones that I was using to have non-resuable zip ties (unless that has been corrected, they've gone back and forth a few times.) so I linked to another listing of black ties that I haven't tried. Mine are 12" long reusable nylon zip ties if that helps.
I am featured in both the Knit Crate Membership crate and the Sock Crate - so there will be a dyeing project in both! (Knit Crate comes with more yarn and more packets of food coloring.)

Does the kook aid dyed yarn keep its color after normal wear and washing?
Yes! I'll admit that I typically hand wash knits so I don't have EXTNESIVE wash testing, but as long as I"ve stored things out of direct sunlight I have a winter hat dyed with food coloring a decade ago that is still super vibrant. (among other things, but this hat get some of the most use!)
Do you have a video on how to make the long skein?

I heard that the kool aid fades off eventually. Is that true?

Hi Cassie, Food coloring isnt' as light fast as commercial acid dyes, so it can fade in direct sunlight for extended periods of time especially if wet. That being said, my kids and I all wear winter hats dyed with food coloring /KoolAid and they have minimal fading. (We just don't store them on windowsills etc)
As for adding blue to the purple - yes! The reason why the purple isn't super bright is that it is made with Red 40 vs Red #3, so adding some pink and bright blue would make it purplier.
Hi there, I was wondering what kind of stove top do you use for dyeing? I'm looking into making a space just for dyeing and I am unsure what kind of quality stove tops would be needed to dye big quantities of yarn. Or should I just go with an oven. Thank you in advance for your opinion!
I use a gas stove top in my kitchen.
A lot of big dyers use catering stands for warming yarn (like you would see at a buffet) steam cabinets where they can layer multiple chafer dishes at one time.

What if you do not have a microwave to heat the yarn in after you paint it? What other method could you use?
You can steam set the fiber for ~30 minutes. Using a steamer basket or crock pot or something with a steam function will work great.

So another question. I've heard it said before but haven't asked. What is felting?
Another great question, Diamond! Felting is the process by which fibers shrink and become disordered. (Think about a sweater shrinking to become a child's size in the washer and dryer.) When fabric is felted, you lose stitch definition and it looks just like a craft felt from a craft store. The process to felt 100% wool requires heat and agitation, so usually a lot of rubbing in hot water or sometimes people will felt on purpose in a washing machine. I felted some oven mitts years ago and they work really great for safely removing kettles from the stove etc.
So I used white wine vinegar. Will that make a difference? I used Kelly Green Wilton. 1/2 t I. 1 cup of water to 8 cups of water and 1T of white wine vinegar. There is still a ton of color in the bath. Why is this happening? Is it the vinegar? Is it my yarn? WOol roving 75%, 25% silk roving. YIKES!!
Kelly Green can take a Loooong time to absorb. I would increase the amount of vinegar and let the fiber cool completely overnight. I have a recent video with it and it gave me some trouble.
Did you wrap the ends? I didn't see you do that but you could have done that off camera. Could that be an issue for the bleeding?
By wrapping the ends do you mean tie it around the large skein? I did.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I ment at the ends of the rolls, folding them closed so fluid could not spread out from there.
@@kathleenmcquade31 OOOOOH from handpainting! I think I momentairly forgot the technique that I used here. I didn't do much wrapping around the ends. I did a tiny bit off camera to just move and wrap it but things stayed pretty separate so I was happy.

Wouldn’t it of been easier to use jars? And just drop even sectioned pieces in and then steam?
Jars could definitely be useful for this situation. I try to mix up the techniques a bit and this is a bit easier for people to do with less equipment available. As for jars, I can fit 5 in my dyepot, but I could have done 3 colors and then 3 more after for sure.
Oooh! What it you put acid in the dye pot, drop some dots of food coloring, NOT mix it and then add the yarn right away?!?! Could be fun and interesting!

Hi, Rebecca! I love your work but I'm still relatively new. to your channel! I was wondering if you've covered this topic somewhere else but superwash always grows significantly when you block it. Does superwash grow while you're dyeing it and then it shrinks back down once it's dry because it's not being pinned into place? If not, what's happening? I've tried googling this but I mostly find articles telling me WHY superwash grows and how to block it and not the superwash dyeing process and whether or not there's growth then as well. I figured you were the best person to ask since you approach a lot of topics from a scientific perspective.
Most wool yarn has a lot of "stretch" to it, and it is easier to stretch it out while it is wet. I'm not 100% sure of the science behind it, this is just from my blocking experience. I think that the "shrinking" back when dyeing has to do with the curl and crimp of the fibers in the yarn. (If you think about curly hair when wet and how it snaps back into the curls while drying.) BUT I'm not sure if this is a superwash/non superwash thing as much as a wool thing. I'm sorry that I can't help answer better!
