- For many Naruto fans the third hokage more often than not is the favorite hokage of so many fans. Many fans remember him as the kind old man who led the village and preached about the land of fire, but it's easy to forget that there was more to Hiruzen's time as hokage than just what he did during Naruto's era. He came of age during the first ninja war and was even made hokage during the first ninja war. He went on to later establish Konoha as being one of the top military powers of the five great nations and he would also find himself in a situation where more than one war would break out during his time as hokage. However, Hiruzen would also be responsible for molding and developing several of the most powerful shinobi who ever lived including the famed legendary sannin trio. For Hiruzen Sarutobi, he's the hokage with the longest amount of time as hokage and so looking over his time as hokage is more complicated than the rest. Is he a success or is he a flawed failure as hokage? Grab those ramen bowls!
When it comes to who is the strongest hokage or who is the best hokage, there have been numerous discussions in the fandom and thousands of videos have been made on the topic. However, the fact of the matter is that each person who ever became hokage is worthy of being celebrated. Many men and women have had dreams of being the hokage of the hidden leaf village, but not all of them were even in the running to become hokage. The seven men and women who were given the title of hokage and had their faces engraved into the hokage monument are shinobi who stand out above all the others. During their time as hokage, something about them made them stand out and it was something about them that made them the ONLY choice to lead the village when they were ruling Konoha. Some were brought in to lead the village during transition period and others were brought in as a sign of force and power to the other ninja villages.
Each of the seven hokages has done something truly remarkable during their time as hokage that allowed them to be remembered by history, for better or for worse. In our own world, we have people who write books about the various presidents and leaders who have served different countries, so why not take an honest look at the seven hokages? Grab those ramen bowls for this newest installment of Hokage Legacy, where we take a brutally honest look at the seven hokages and I give my opinion on why they should be respected or why they should be criticized for their time as hokage. Continuing where the last video left off, we're going to be looking at Hiruzen Sarutobi, the third hokage of Konoha, and look at how the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde persona is appropiate when looking at the ONLY hokage to serve two terms as hokage. Hiruzen's legacy as hokage is in my opinion ultimately shaped by how he chose to handle the light and darkness that comes with being hokage, success or failure, it really depends on how you look at his decisions as hokage!

Hiruzen will always be the Kage that allowed the Uchiha to be massacred, Naruto grow up with no knowledge of who he was, and he indirectly created the Akatsuki whivh led to the 4th War. Hiruzen is responsible for 3 wars nd thousands of deaths.

@@animeblakklive7828 when naruto found out who his parents were, the villages were at better terms with each other, konoha actually loved naruto, seeing how some sacrificed their lives so narutos location wasn't known. Compared to back then, minatos enemies were more prevalent. If he told naruto who his parents were he would run his moves, villagers find out, words spread, minatos enemies, literally every other country, find out and attack konoha for revenge. What hiruzen did not only protected the village, but naruto. No way he can just tell him as if nothing would happen

Hiruzen seems to me like a man in philosophical crisis. He drifted between aggression and compassion, no doubt two opposing philosophies he learned from Tobirama and Hashirama.
In his early years, it is likely that his young ideology sided more with Tobirama as young males are likely to be more aggressive and take risks. But as he aged, wisdom showed him the many benefits that cone with compassion, including sparing young lives that were essentially fodder on the battlefield.
Sure, it was young Hiruzen who hid things from Naruto but ended up telling everything once he became the wise old man? Aggression is killing all uchihas after your elder brother dies since there is no one to stop you from doing what you want. Just because you're a black guy doesn't mean you should sound uneducated.

In order to not only train children to be ninja soldiers, but be extraordinarily well at it, you have to have some darkness in you. I really liked the 3rd Hokage because he's honestly a realistic person in an anime. Not everyone is a white knight or an evil ruler, he swings between the 2 like real people would.
No one asked for military expansion. If your neighboring country makes nukes then you're not going to buy chips and be a couch potato. Realistic person, my ass.

I've made it no secret I'm not a big fan of Hiruzen Sarutobi, but I tried to be neutral in this one. He's a perfectly flawed character imo, especially as a leader.
That’s a good way to describe him, I would look at his life as a tragedy, a good man who failed more then he succeeded
A fair assessment not many people bring up the fact he rose to power at a young age. If Tobi was around to ease him into the roll he might have faired better

Military expansion in of itself is not a bad thing.
The problem is it intimidates the other nations. Look at world War 2 and Germany.
However had America been expanding at that time. Japan wouldn't have been as brazen.
If a village or nation down grades to far they become vulnerable.
If they increase military power to far what happens is it scares other villages.
There is a difference between imperialism and nationalism.
Just hearing you say "in a war that saw the death of all the 2nd generation Kage" makes me think this should've had a whole movie to its self.

Thanks for this one I loved it, I’ve been seeing too much third hokage slander lately like he wasn’t that guy yes he had short comings but he was def the most realistic leader we’ve seen with keeping up appearance and getting his hands dirty at the same time. We see how naruto has no time for his kids during peace time how could he have so much time to watch naruto during times of tension other then housing

The problem with danzo was that even if he loved the village he loved himself more he didn't do anything for the village unless it suited his needs as well he just masked as "the greater good" for example he wouldn't consider any alternatives to keep the uchiha alive because he craved their power and eliminations and wouldn't accept any other outcome that didn't give him that, he wanted to be seen like hiruzen but didn't really wanna give his life for the leaf, he specifically kept root from helping vs pain, danzo was selfish and didn't truly wanna better the village unless he could be seen as its hero he even attempted to kill hiruzen, would that in anyway have helped the leaf? No but he didn't care cuz it was never about we with danzo its about me

Danzo was better suited to handle the darkness of the village although he was wrong for killing the Uchiha, Nono Yakushi and attempting to kill his best friend. Hiruzen and Danzo were the perfect balance of light and darkness in the village despite their differences.

Hiruzens duality comes from an inner struggle. He struggles with the influence and mentorship of Tobirama and his own kind nature. A man in perpetual inner conflict. Hes bound to make mistakes. He needed therapy.

Ahhhhhh the main man himself. I really have such a half and half relationship with him. He was a sweet man in instilling the will of fire. But my lord. The uchiha massacre, failing to subdue the 9 tails, not killing oro, being so passive towards danzo actions, military expansion that caused more problems in the 3rd war, it was just a lot of negativity for him. Also not taking care of naruto is my BIGGEST ISSUE WITH HIM.

Hiruzen was man who was to soft to be kage but him and dark counterpart had nearly 50 Years of an effective partnership and he was a man Hashirama and Tobirama would've been proud of
He likely killed the gold and silver brothers soon after he became hokage earning the title of god of shinobi
Hiruzen being one of the dominant players in the second war is a big shock but makes sense with him and Danzo wishing to establish the leaf as the hegemon of the ninja villages. He'd have clashed with Onoki, the third Kazekage and Hanzo during that period as well.
He's a man that's made several major mistakes throughout his tenure but he always tried to do the right thing by the leaf.
Hiruzen is this kind of person that is perfect being a normal employee, but once becomes the boss, everything goes south.

I lost all respect for the third hokage when he dropped off naruto's monthly allowance and told him "not to spend it all in one place" in a very cold manner. Naruto couldn't have been older than 7 years old and he was an orphan, talk about a scum bag
He wasn’t the only orphan in the village, I’m pretty sure there was more and he couldn’t give Special treatment to naruto, and he was most likely busy as the Hokage

Do you think the third hokage could have prevented the Uchiha coup d'état if he gave Itachi an opportunity to try to smooth out the tensions between the Uchiha clan and Konohagakure?
The hardliners in the Uchiha clan would make it even more difficult. The grey haired Uchiha who was one of the three assholes who falsely accused Itachi of killing Shisui, manipulated Fugaku into plotting the coup.
I think it was highly possible if Hiruzen dealt with Danzo properly. But Danzo wanted Uchiha gone. He killed Shisui who had good plan and then threatened Itachi with Sasuke. Unfortunately Danzo had a final word.
Yes. Hiruzen couldve worked it out, and Danzo knew it. Danzo needed the Uchiha gone, regardless of wether or not they were planning a coup.
Danzo's ultimate motive was to get the power to control the Nine Tails and expand the land of fire. He needed those sharingan for his arm.
In short, the Third Hokage couldve worked it out, by a 75% chance of success.

Fugaka was strong enough to control the Nine-Tails? That's news to me. What's your source for that?
I did a video on it a while back. It's from the Itachi light novel, Fugaku was about to head to the battlefield when he saw the kyuubi attack, specifically with the intent of stopping the kyuubi. The elders forbade him from going to the battlefield and to lead the police in evacuating civilians and did so right after Fugaku specifically said he was going to the kyuubi. In the anime, they take it further having Fugaku show Itachi his plan via genjutsu. Kidnap Naruto, then have the full kyuubi rampage into the village with him controlling it. Fugaku's genjutsu was openly praised in that novel by a few people, with Danzo even calling him a generational talent and when he said it, Hiruzen did not speak else of it. There's a lot of info in the novels, which is why the anime screwing up the adaptations of the two Itachi novels was a shame. They got Fugaku's visual powers right, but they cut out the lore and they gave his mangekyou sharingan backstory the same backstory as the one Shisui told Itachi on how he awakened the eye. Fugaku's skill with sharingan wasn't pushover, base sharingan or mangekyou.

No matter what happens I will protect our… no my village. I still believe that protecting the village is the best way to protect people, shinobi, and children…! Anyone who tries to harm it, whether they are my friends, siblings or my own children… I won't forgive them - Hashirama. This is what a hokage means to me and Hiruzen embodied it the most.
Giving danzo carte blanche,letting orochimaru escape,leaving naruto to fend for himself,uchiha clan massacre,it goes on and on. If we're being honest he's really the only failure among the hokage.
He ain't no failure, but look on the bright side, Oorchimaru trained Sasuke after he left the village.

I always found it weird the anime version always depicted Hiruzen as a "victim of circumstance" whenever on screen pretty much and the managa version paints him similar but victim of his ignorance or lack of knowledge anime does that but more "victim of circumstance" that he couldn't control atleast in part 1 anime version
Biggest problem with Hiruzen and Danzo are that we don't saw anything what drove them to that point of view.
Like I can perfectly understand why Tobirama don't like Uchihas, and still he had big knowledge about Uchihas and some even were good friend with him. Madara and Obito we know about them, how they end up on dark path, we can understand or at least see their point of view. But for Sarutobi and Danzo there is nothing, they both said we work in best interest of Village, but everything what they did turned against village. And how ppl around them didn't saw and stop them, like really? What was that big plan? So many random actions and so many stupid moves that almost lead Village to be destroyed many times.

I remember Hiruzen finding toddler Naruto alone in the woods trying to find something to eat because he was broke and Hiruzen doing nothing about that.
Facts: Third hokage is stated to be the strongest hokage with Minato, also Third Hokage is scared of the fourth hokage coffin when fighting Orochimaru. But then everything change when the introduction of the Akatsuki.
hiruzen thought to keep the peace with the Uchiha but would side to wipe them out if they continued to oppose the village (although the they opposed the village due to it's discrimination) reminds me of what hashirama said about killing his own child if they opposed the village so if hashirama we're in sarutobis position would he too opt to wipe the Uchiha out ?

Hiruzen was my favorite Hokage of all of em..
Hiruzen and Danzo's dynamic is similar to Naruto and Sasuke if Sasuke remained evil. Naruto always believed he could bring Sasuke back to the leaf despite him openly accepting the darkness. Hiruzen also knew Danzo was evil but had to bear with him since they were friends.
Only difference is Sasuke was redeemed in the end. Imagine what would've happened if Naruto realized Sasuke was too far gone and decided to kill him or keep him around like a second Danzo.
Hiruzen did not "bear with Danzo's evil" he burdened Danzo with the darkness of the village willingly. Danzo is asked to be evil and was right more times than not. That's why there's a village at all.
If Sasuke was forced into a situation where the village was in danger because of Naruto being too kind he would be forced to act like Danzo. Danzo was burdened by this.
Hiruzen refused to deal with the darkness of the ninja world and placed it all on Danzo while he gave inspiring speeches to Pre-K students. Which is actually important too which Danzo understood and willingly accepted those terms. Hiruzen was to be in the front smiling while Danzo is in the back taking care of things.

majority of these issues wouldn’t have formed if he didn’t share the qualities of greed and selfishness like his best friend danzo. 2 decades worth of prosperity went down the drain because you were the catalyst for two unnecessary wars while not being man enough to commit to solving your problems. this gave rise to danzo doing more harm to the village than good. they both looked after themselves while trying to hid under the guise of “the village comes first.” we lost a clan full of greatness (especially prodigies like shisui and itachi) and gave way to the generation of the 3rd ninja war committing treason against konoha and nations outside of them becoming terrorists. we see his failures get pushed onto a 24 yr old who didn’t even get to have his own family. i believe madara and black zetsu would have manipulated someone, however, the other issues could have been avoided. if you are pro village, then you should have dealt with orochimaru just like how you were prepared to kill anyone else who stepped outta line. he’s lucky naruto did not foster hate and went rogue with sasuke. you can tell he took tobirama’s teachings too seriously and did not try to form his own ideology after that time of peace. i believe tobirama knew his mistakes caught up to him and figured he failed hurizen and danzo with being a better sensei and had to go with the “lesser evil” as hokage. he’s a tragic character written correctly and is the epitome of struggling with balance of good and evil.

2 decades of prosperity led to the world having any chance at all against Madara. Without Konoha's strength the world would have stood no chance against Black Zetsu and Madara which was always Danzo's true enemy he was planning for. The Uchiha were sacrifices because Zetsu were going to use them...again. So that couldn't happen and it saved the world. Thats their own fault for being played by an alien and being liabilities. Danzo knew Madara was back after the Kyubi killed Minato and he knew Madara was going to use them some way somehow their eyes were too precious not to. Hell Danzo used them himself he knew their worth to a villain. Whether the Uchiha loved the village or not it didn't matter they had to go for the village's sake. They stood no chance against Madara and their eyes would only be used as his tools.
@@crunkalac how it’s their fault for not knowing there was a greater power at work? that makes no sense. blaming them for something that was falsely written centuries before their birth is ridiculous. saying there was nothing to do to help the uchiha is a cope out. too many excuses to say you cannot save a clan while in the same breath allowing them to be poorly mistreated and represented. most of the tactics danzo implemented against the uchiha was for his personal gain. he did not know madara was back. what he did speculate was that an uchiha used the kyubi. instead of trying to help the greater uchiha population and understand their plight, he and others of village hierarchy were prejudiced and treated them lesser than. they were one of the founding clans but their pride was stepped upon by everyone.

My biggest gripe is him letting Danzo do what he wants. I get he didn't want to get his hands dirty, but you're the Hokage, sometimes hard decisions must be made. Him letting Danzo do the dirty work did more harm than good, like a lot more harm. You could even say he was thinking of his own reputation as a squeaky Hokage rather than others.
Danzo was suited to handle the darkness of the village although he was wrong for some of the things he did.
Hiruzen is the best Homage in Naruto. The only arguments against him are Danzo's doing of which like it or not Danzo was necessary.
#NotMyHokage. I get he's only human, but I'm tired of that being an excuse to do bad things when you've been taught what's right and wrong. I also get that being in charge of managing an entire village must be difficult, but that's your job to take responsibility. Previous and future Hokages have all managed to handle the balance of facing evil and still be good people in this terrible world.

The most evil thing Hiruzen did was be too soft and too hesitant. Hiruzen should've and could've killed Orochimaru and Danzo, but he didn't because he was too much of an optimist.
Just like how Hashirama should've killed Madara when he had the chance, but he was too optimistic.
On the inverse, Tobirama was a realist and he still did things people would consider a failure as a Hokage, even if he was right.
There seems to be no in-between, you're either too harsh or too soft, both have lead to many issues for the shinobi world.
Hiruzen's greatest moment, was staying as Hokage as long he did even coming back as Hokage, thus keeping that fuckface Danzo away from the seat.

2. It was after War. So the Peace between the Villages was still not 100% good. So everything could have destroyed the peace. That was one big problem
3. Kurama. The Villages was destroyed and needed be rebuild. With that and fact 2 Kuramas attack could brought a new war.
4. Uchiha Coup. Another problem Hiruzen needed handle
5. To fact 2 Naruto wasn`t the only Orphan. Like we saw in Boruto with mugino. The whole Village is like his children and a lot of children lost their paretns because of War and Kurama. So do you really want Hiruzen to treat Naruto better thr other?
6. To fact 2 Minato defeted 1000 ninjas in one battle... What do you think how many enemies he had? And how many of them wanted revange? + all the villages who wanted war. The peace was only there because they feared minato. So if they knew who Naruto is they would attack him, try to kill him or try to capture him. Only for the fact that he was Minatos son. Not to start with if they knew he had Kurama.

I think everyones way too hard on hiruzen especially with all the reconning done to his character. The struggle with light and dark 100% correct about hiruzen. But when it came to danzo, could hiruzen realistically kill him or do anything without starting a civil war, due to everyone who was loyal to danzo? Also, no one ever talks about it but what does the power of hokage mean? What's the power scale? Kages aren't all powerful because they have to bend to the feudal lords will. Also, even with tsunade it seem those old hags (the counsil) has alot of power the hokage couldn't ignore (remember their reaction when tsunade picked up and they where flabbergasted during the pain arc?). As far as orochimaru he didn't let him due whatever he had no proof of his experimentations,, just circumstantial evidence/whispers. If hiruzen could kill his precious student without evidence over whispers he'd be danzo. I don't think it was a mistake him not killing orochimaru, when he got credible evidence, because if he didn't survive to have his arms sealed orochimaru would've never found out about the reaper death seal, or how to undo it. If orochimaru didn't research it in and out,the 4 kage would've never been revived, (upgrade) close to their original strength, and greatly helped end the 4th war. Also, to blame him soley for the many times reconned uchia massacre isn't all that fair. First it was itach,then it was danzo, then it was hiruzen, then its was obito all along and he helped itachi kill all the uchiha for "reasons", then it was black zetsu who planned it from kaguya being seal/birth. Not to even mention he tried every possible means of peace. hiruzen sending shisui on a last ditch effort to try and stop the coup de tate, but of couse danzo interfered like he always did. Idk why he never mentioned it being a last resort to Sasuke or danzos undermining his efforts. But, I guess that was him not putting blame and danzo anymore and ultimately accepting responsibility. For that matter, does Sasuke even know obito and black zetsus involvement?. As far as naruto goes, I don't believe it was just him being intentionally neglectful to him, he treated konohamaru and asuma the same way. We see through tsunade, Kakashi and naruto how hard and busy it is to be hokage. I believed he tried his best everywhere. Like you said, he was perfectly flawed. I mean, he still made sure naruto had a roof over his head and money every month. Not for nothing, but konohamaru and naruto both pulled pranks and caused ruckus just to get the Oldmans attention. That must mean he had some sort of grandfather/son relationship with him; even if that wasn't prominent enough to ease the loneliness and heartache naruto felt growing up. Hiruzen wasn't the worst hokage. you could make an entire video on all 7 hokages and awful their decisions, failure and actions really do make them/ if you really wanted to look at them in that lighting.

I personally feel like if Tobirama would’ve let Hiruzen, Kagami, Danzo and the rest of his team help him. They could’ve beaten the Ginkaku & Kinkaku force. There’s just no way they would’ve lost with that many powerhouses on their team. Especially since they were all pretty much in their prime.

1. Fused Momoshiki used Shikamaru's shadow paralysis jutsu on them to where they couldn't move and Boruto had to throw his vanishing rasengan in order to free them and save them.
2. After the fight vs Naruto and Sasuke, Fused Momoshiki replenished his health and chakra with the scientific ninja tool from Katasuke and ate 3 more chakra pills which replenished him even further and still lost 1v1 to KID Boruto while Naruto and Sasuke were pinned down by chakra rods.
3. Base Boruto using a shadow clone was capable of blitzing Fused Momoshiki and punching him in the stomach, activated his jougan and countered Momoshiki's taijutsu which created an opening for another vanishing rasengan hit to his ribcage all before the real Boruto came out of the sky with his giant vanishing rasengan(that was mixed with both Boruto and Naruto's chakra) to defeat Fused Momoshiki. But the *FACT* remain that KID Boruto did indeed fight *FUSED* Momoshiki 1v1 and held his own and won proving he's already Otsutsuki tier, it's not debatable.
Oh yeah. Hiruzen was a bit of a perv according to Jirayia when, he was considering the idea of peeking into the ladies bath house. Surprised that his wife didn't bust him.
