    I love your yard. You inspired me to try new varieties. I’m now not afraid to plant them closer to the house to provide shade

    You guys crack me up, love the music...bananas were the first plants to go in for me, they give me the tropical vibe for privacy I crave in this huge city...still waiting for blooms, but the leaves are getting huge and finally putting off shade in my barren lot...I've had to bring in truckloads of mulch to add height to my grounds, nobody told me about the flooding in the rains we'd have, great for bananas, not so much the avocado...after coming from a quarter acre lush food forest to this grasshole, I see promise in plant placement...FINALLY...can't wait for the tree fern and banana plant in front of my livingroom windows to give me that botanical curtain of privacy
    ...and my roselle hibiscus to fruit for tea...but the pathways through the jungle paradise of the South beats out any of the pumpkin latte paths of the North...gotta go pound some dirt kids, have fun...!

      Bananas were some of the first for us as well! They add so much tropical splendor everywhere and are awesome for privacy too. Did you say you have a tree fern? How awesome! I would love to get my hands on one of this to plant. I’m sorry about your flooding…that sounds like a challenge for sure. We have certain years here that are wetter than others. But we seem to be shielded because we are on such a skinny part of the island. I wish we could get more rain. We watch it come across the river almost everyday and then it gives up. We got some yesterday which was nice. My roselike hibiscus never reseeded for me, it was definitely a favorite of mine as well. I may see if I can grab one up at our local edible nursery banana river yard. We need to make our plans for the backyard to replace a good bit of our grass. Some wind tolerant things as it gets crazy sometimes. We are thinking dragon fruit trellises and guavas for the tall plants and pineapples, perennial spinaches, potatoes and flowers surrounding. Banana river yard made trellises out of moringa tree and trims them, but I would like to try that too! Hope you have an awesome time planting! Have a great weekend!

      @@IslandsnHighlands yes Aussie tree ferns, got them at Home Depot, I'm sure I'll get some frost damage this far north but I'm keeping several in pots till they get some size to them and I get the ground built up with branches and mulch. The one I had in Lake Placid was a good 12 ft tall, so exotic...

    G'day there. This is the best explanation on banana flowering I've seen on UA-cam. Thanks heaps. It's great. Do you keep your groups of trees to just a few? Do you find better yields if you manage how many trees in each group? I'm a novice... just moved to the other side of the country and a completely different climate... but have three groups of banana trees (grasses 😉). Cheers 🍻

      Thank you! We find they are best splitting the clumps, less to fertilize and they don’t lean as much. The leaning becomes an issue when it has the banana fruit-then you need to prop it up. We usually try to keep two plants together so you have a replacement tree once the mother has fruited and needs to be cut out. The smaller pup will also help with photosynthesis for the mother plant when the leaves are worn out on the mother. So a mother with a pup is 👍

    Thanks for this video to know how to spot flowering bananas . I have the ornamental musa basjoo banana and the top was bunching like romaine lettuce but it was also attached to lots of large pups. So I thought this was the reason it was loosing strength or nutrients so I seperated the pups and then cut the top of the one that was bunching so it can regain its strength. Come to find out it was flowering 😢😅. It wouldn’t have been edible for me either way but would have been so nice to see in zone 7! ( I looked up the video after all was said and done 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤦🏻‍♀️)

      Yes! I watched a video of a company in Uganda that makes rugs and clothing with banana fiber! I would absolutely love to get the machine that shreds the pulp and give it a try. Apparently it accepts dyes even better than cotton! Have you made anything from banana fiber?

    I'm wondering how much watering I need to give my flowering plant. Its got a few bananas already (about 70). Should I water daily? do I need to cover them in zone 11a and how many litres of water do they need?

    • @IslandsnHighlands
      @IslandsnHighlands  Рік тому +1

      Yes you can water bananas every day given you have well draining soil that dries out between waterings. In zone 11a you should be basically frost free- only reason to cover the plant is if there is a frost in the forecast, and even at that some banana varieties are cold hardy below freezing.

    • @IslandsnHighlands
      @IslandsnHighlands  Рік тому +1

      The plant that fruited dies off, but a new pup (plant) will shoot up to take its place.

      @IslandsnHighlands ok so wondering if I should chop and drop the two fruiting plants I have after the fruit ripens. They are in the middle of a cluster of pups and medium size plants on the edge of a drop off in our property. I'd be worried if they fell on their own, they'd take out a few of the others around.
