  • Hey Banana lovers; I’d like to share a controversial video on how and why I trim all my Banana plants Rhizome Leaves to promote faster growth, Flower, Blossoms, and Bananas. (Yes it really work) to promote new growth and to produce Banana hands quicker.
Don't forget to Check out my Banana Group
    / floridabananalovers
    (CONTROVERSIAL)
Pruning - Trimming Banana Plants, seems to be a subject that is very controversial.
    (DIFFERENCE IN PHILOSOPHY)
Some people say trim and some say not to trim because each leaf is a solar panel, collecting energy to produce a large load of carbohydrates via photosynthesis. Less leaf tissue = less photosynthesis = less fruit.
    (BY COMPARISON)
It was referred to this is why we have a concern when insects are eating plant foliage because they are reducing the photosynthetic surface area of the foliage.
    (LOGIC?)
But what is the logic of removing leaf tissue that is still photosynthesizing?
    (PROVEN TO WORK)
    However with that said,
I have been punning for years, and have seen great results when trimming like in the video and had no issues at all.
    (JUST A THOUGHT)
Note:. The banana plant wants to have leaves. If you cut the leaves it wants to grow new leaves. So it makes more. But as you know, the leaves expire over time as the plant gets taller. The lower leaves start to yellow and fall off anyway. On top of that once the leaves above mature they block a good bit of sun from the lower ones in essence lowering the efficiency of said leaves. At the end of the day only keeping the newest and most productive leaves at the top makes sense. As quick as they grow and produce pups it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try and see for yourself. As you may know, the Gardening world is full of myths and legends,s and misinformation. I tend to try things for myself stick with what works. At times I go against the grain like with using Horse Manure, yet another controversial subject. . But in the end, my results speak for themselves.
    (FORTUNATELY)
Fortunately, I have been getting nice size hands of Bananas that have been plump and that have ripened just fine. no diseases or issues.
    (DIFFERENCE IN OPINION)
Just because one has a different philosophy and approach in doing things, why would it be wrong just because some disagree? It’s been proven to speed growth rate and quicker to produce.
    (OPEN-MINDED)
I’m always willing to try and learn new techniques, been like that all my life. I always say, do what works for you it never hurts to try something new, as long as it's easy and carefree. May the Banana Gods be with you! :-)
    (SHORTER GROWING SEASONS)
Taking that into consideration that there are many places North of us that have a short growing season and for them to be able to grow bananas even a few weeks quicker would be the difference between the bananas freezing or having a nice harvest. so for them, this may be the difference between fruiting and harvesting or not. They have nothing to lose by trying this method. As it turns out I had a lot of Northerners who had fruit for the first time and thanked me for the video.
    (OPTIONS)
You have the option to trim or not, that is totally up to you, I am one that just likes to share my experiences with others so that they know what others are doing with their permaculture. Trimming is extra work that is not needed but by trimming it sure does make the plants landscaping look more beautiful as well. So I feel trimming serves a few purposes.
    For the disbelievers:
NOTE: Google on deleafing banana plants. some commercial growers use this www.promusa. org/ Deleafing (take out the spacing in URL)
This is from the above link: ....... Impact
A study conducted in Guadeloupe at a time when only Mycosphaerella musicola was present, showed that although deleafing reduced the weight and diameter of fruits harvested at 900 degree-days, their green life was significantly increased1. In highly infested plots, leaf removal increased the green life from an average of 7.7 days to 45.8 days. Since the presence of necrotic tissues during the last month of fruit growth seems to be responsible for the physiological changes linked to early ripening, the authors suggest that in severe infestations, yield losses could be reduced by deleafing one month before harvest.

Thank you for your help I live by St. Cloud fla n only been here a few years I love gardening but live in an HOA n only garden we can have is something that’s off the ground.I love your set up it’s beautiful. I planted a kavendish banana in a pot it got to big so I planted it in the ground n also planted a Valencia orange tree both about 7 mths ago n they are both doing well especially since I trimmed my banana tree like you said I had to take off like 6 leaves.I also been playing around with some pineapple as well two of them are starting to take off.I lost my wife a few yrs ago so I live with my daughter to take care of my grandchildren while mom n dad work,Child care is expensive so I get to be a part of thier lives n mom can save a bit more so it’s wonderful being here for them n I recieve more love than I ever dreamed.I will hit the button n look forward to seeing more of your wonderful place. Thank you n stay well.

Banana plants require lots of daily water and lots of fertilizer. if you do not give them both, they tend not to mature properly. my water table is shallow, so they get plenty of water.

I rent and can’t put things in ground due to mostly concrete. My bananas in big pots I got from a rubbish bin at construction site. I have 100s of plants in the small space and I could have more it’s just a lot of time on top of full time work. But yes to have a bit more space would be a blessing

Also another cool use for Banana leaves is turn them into a beautiful looking natural wall paper. After letting them dry out and brown, if you soak them in water being careful to not break them they will turn soft and rehydrate so they can be handled wiithout breaking and flattened out. Then cut out the ridge stem in the middle of the leaf and then roll some wallpaper glue on the wall and stick the slightly damp leaves.

I bought a house with tons of neglected plants because no one took care of them after the previous owner died. Currently, I'm trying to clean up the mess that is the banana plants along with a dozen other projects. There's lots of dead stalks inside what is a big group of plants well over 10ft tall possibly even 20ft. There's no flowers on any of them. I'm trying to pull out all of the dead stuff so they can breathe. I got stung by a surprise sattleback caterpillar the day before yesterday while trimming. I've fed a lot of the debris to my animals. I suppose once I get all of it out of there, I should take some of it and put it back in there in a bit of a neater manner. Some of the junk I've pulled out of there is moldy and kind of gross with all sorts of things living in there. Your video has been quite helpful seeing how you care for your plants.
I have some 10-10-10 fertilizer, but I'm a bit weary about using fertilizer.

Thank you. Just saw the message. I sent a request. Do you help with more than just bananas in the group?
I have lots of citrus trees, pears, peaches, and other fruit trees on the property as well. I'm slowly getting them cleaned up, but it's taking a while and I've been reading about each different type of tree before trimming it because each kind has a different method to pruning it. You can't trim a peach tree and a pear tree the same way without having issues and citrus you shouldn't cut away anything besides watershoots and damaged/dead branches. I probably shouldn't do more than cut away dead/damaged stuff at this point/late in the season. I'm on the panhandle, we get a little bit of a winter here. I don't want to stress the trees too much and end up having to wrap them for the winter.

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  9 місяців тому

yes, your plant needs at least five leaves. here is an article, about deleafing; Impact
A study conducted in Guadeloupe at a time when only Mycosphaerella musicola was present, showed that although deleafing reduced the weight and diameter of fruits harvested at 900 degree-days, their green life was significantly increased1 . In highly infested plots, leaf removal increased the green life from an average of 7.7 days to 45.8 days. The authors also note that intense deleafing (leaving less than 3 leaves on a plant) negatively impacts fruit weght. However, leaving 5 or more leaves should not significantly affect yield. Since the presence of necrotic tissues during the last month of fruit growth seems to be responsible for the physiological changes linked to early ripening, the authors suggest that in severe infestations, yield losses could be reduced by deleafing one month before harvest.

Banana leaves are extremely nutritious for humans but they have too much fiber that the body can't digest, so another use for them is to run them through a slow masticating juicer for a super healty green drink or to add to smoothies.

I do not remove the pups till they are over two feet tall. I also leave at least three pups on the plant to get full grown so they will replace the one that fruited, because you need to cut that one down after it is done fruiting.

Hi.Great video you got here. Here's some other things if you'd like to experiment with.
    Fertilizer programme:
    Month 1 - 5: 16:16:16 (150g/plant/month)
Month 6: MOP (100g/plant - one time application on month 6 or when you see the last short leaf before flowering comes out) + 12:12:17:2(100g/plant/month)
    Month 7 till harvest: 12:12:17:2 (150g/plant/month)
For the suckers. 2 ways to go around it.
First: Only keep 1 at 3 months old and another at 8 months old.
Second: Only keep one once the flower comes out.
Choose only sword suckers as this is the one with vigorous growth rate.
As for leaves. Maintain 8 leaves while growing, 6 once the flower comes out and 4(excluding the small leaves before flowering) once you cut the flower. Cut the flower around 2 inch after the last bunch.
    Just sharing. Happy gardening everyone.

  • @almillar

Only removing damaged, dying or dead leaves is beneficial. They grow appox 42 leaves and fruit. The object of the game is to generate as much energy as possible during that period to support a large bunch of bananas. Maybe the increased growth you are experiencing is due to the hügelkultur system starting to work after there has been enough time for it to break down and feed the bananas. Removing good green leaves is not necessary (except when maybe needing to increase airflow or sunlight penetration). The chop and drop will be helping the plants which may be helping too. The extract you provide from musa website is talking about removing sick leaves, not green healthy leaves. Im in New Zealand where we get a lot of wind damage, so its really important for us to have as many leaves as possible (including pups). Anyway, thats just my experience.

Does giving the plant a dry session "trick " the plant to flower. Will the banana tree survive a dry session like that. How much can they dry before it kills that plant 🤔 does the banana tree in a small pot in the ground also trick it to flower. These are tips for flowering vines. Small pot and once foliage is set on the vine to give it a dry spell to get it start flowering. No nutritious soil either. Would dead heading the whole tree trick it flower when comes back

Get yourself a "corn knife" from tractor supply... or Amazon. They're a perfectly hooked knife with a flat grind on one side and bevled on the others. It's so perfect for banana plants that I now can't imagine growing them without one. As a warning... IMMEDIATELY WD40 and wipe any steel blade after cutting... whatever is inside of Banana plants is nearly instant corrosion for anything other than high grade stainless... and the hooked blade is an absolute PITA to sharpen.
Ps: if you're worried about snakes... copperhead favorite food is cicadas. They'll gather at the bottom of big oaks in Texas at night. Got tagged in 2019 by one fang through the top of my shoe in 2019... feels exactly like your finger feels immediately after you just smashed it bad enough that you'll loose the nail... but the feeling is the whole limb and it lasts for 24-48 hours. Literally the exact same throbbed burning complete with the cold sweaty nauseous all over feeling... Zero star experience, but snake bites in the US have a 99+% survival rate these days which is the only fact that kept me sane during the ordeal.
