I know you haven't gotten a lot of views on this video, but it's honestly the best review of the SRT+ that I've seen so far. You answer a lot of compatability questions, especially the PAL ones. The only ones I have left are about Famicom games, especially those with expansion audio, which no one is adressing. Thank you.
Thanks man! I just started this channel, so I don't expect much right now. And yeah, I wish I had the Castlevania III Famicom cart f.i. so I could test it out. The used chips inside the previous model have had some revisions though, so something that sounds bad now, may improve on the next one, or unfortunately, become worse. And the NES side could definitely use some work.
Finally! Someone does a review of the Super Retro Advance adapter with the Super Retro Trio. I couldn't get it to work without the A/V port as well. The best review by far!
Yes, atleast on my system this is the case (there will probably be revisions), but only over HDMI. So if your TV supports changing the audio input while keeping HDMI video, you can use the (color-reversed) white and red RCA audio jacks and have proper stereo.
NoseBearEatsFudge. I agree and it sucks doesn't it? But compare to my original super retro trio (in which I only have a 4k 55 inch curved tv to play my games on), I think this is a winner in my book. Me, I care more about the picture and you can't go wrong with HDMI. It's very true when they say that: "you can't have everything."
@@neosaurus Mono output through the red/white RCA connectors too... :-( I have the new blue/black PAL version and have connected it with either HDMI or RCA; mono from both annoyingly. Picture and overall sound is great, just...mono.... :-(
I have the Super Retro Trio (the normal version in the red and black colors) and I simply loved this console, plus it works beautifully on NES, SNES and GENESIS. Luckily my SNES controls that came on the console are versions with SNES plugs instead of the GENESIS plug like the one you showed in the video, but even then I would like you to solve a question: what is the Genesis plug adapter for the SNES that appears at 2:32 of the video and where you bought one? (I do not need the adapter, since my Super Retro Trio controls have the SNES plug, but I'd like to know if I needed it and to also help people need this adapter and have bothered with the Genesis plug in a SNES control). I'll also be getting the Super Retro Trio Plus in my collection soon! Excellent review!
Thanks for your kind words! It's not a plug adapter actually. At 2:23 I show both controllers and follow the cables, then I keep the Genesis-style plug in one hand while continuing to follow the other cable with the SNES plug to show it is much longer. I can see why it looks like an adapter though. If you do need an adapter, here's a Canadian guy who makes them: bit.ly/2Jr49aM - However, I don't know if the button mappings are compatible with the Super Retro Trio. It's cool that they did release a version with SNES plugs eventually, I totally missed that in my research before I did this video. Cheers!
as many said before this is the best review on the console, even if it is the eu ver and i am in the na market. i watched this too late tho as i bought it thinking its perfectly fine for sfc carts after watching other reviews... found out the hard way and i am now nervous to use sfc cart on it. otherwise I still like this a lot. mainly use it on a cheap 43 inch hdtv, but it gives a different retro vibe when connected to my 10 inch portable dvd player thru composite. thanks for the great review!
Hello guys, I have a N8 nes cartridge but It seems it's not working with this console. Do you know what kind of NES flashcart works in this console? Cheers
What retro system would you recommend the most that doesn't use emulation like this one? I mostly play megadrive and master system games, but will be playing some NES/SNES games as well? I'd also prefer an aspect ratio switch, but my tv can switch anyway, when you are playing the 16:9 aspect ration on this system does it fill the full screen on a hdmi television?
Thanks, this was a great review of the sr3+. I have the orginal sr3 and had been wondering if it was worth upgrading. Quick question; Have you tried virtua racing for the sega genesis on this system?
I have the first Super Retro Trio, and the Genesis sound is not so good like the original. So, in this Plus version, has this been fixed? Sorry for my bad Engrish.
I have this and aside from the power switch not working once it's great I'm getting into old nes and snes fantasy rpg and shmup games and this was a no-brainer cost wide as buying the old consoles and upgrading to HDMI would have been out of the question I may still buy a retro 5 at a later date but only for the game boy option and the translation patch ability 🤗
An interesting video, I’ve been looking for one about Super Retro Trio Plus that would tell about technical details, and this is the first one I’ve come across. Still one question remains. Does this PAL version of the system always outputs video at 50 Hz, or does that change depending on region switch position? I'm worried that if the console runs games of all regions at correct speed, but converts NTSC games to 50 Hz, some issues might arise, jerkiness of motion or something like that, if nothing more serious. By the way, the issue with Starwing on the original Super Retro Trio probably reveals that the system internally at some level is an NTSC system. PAL Starwing seems to do that on NTSC consoles. (At least on those clone consoles I’ve tried - don’t know if the same would happen on genuine NTSC SNES.) I have Hyperkin SupaBoy S that has PAL/NTSC switch, and if the switch is at NTSC position, the game gives that same glitch, but when the switch is at PAL position, there's no glitch. (I don't have the NTSC version of the game, so can't test it the other way around.) But a funny thing is, I also have the non-Plus Super Retro Trio, and on that, the glitch is not there. My SRT is a PAL system, and a revised version, with controllers looking like those with the first one, but with SNES ports, and possibly some internal changes. So could it be that the one you’re using was actually NTSC version, or could it be that the SRT originally was made into an NTSC system, and when quickly adapted for PAL market, something was missed and left as NTSC, and that was corrected on revised model?
Thanks for your question and sorry about my late aswer. Interesting though! My system says PAL on the box, but I think it's an early revision, so they probably used NTSC chips on the first batches. You're right to ask the question about speed differences, and I should have added this in my video: The Mega Drive system (on this revision at least) will always run on PAL (50 Hz), while the NES/SNES will switch to 60Hz when you switch regions. Pretty strange. This is such a cool system, too bad the insides are such a mess when you think about it.
No worries about the delay. A reply at all was a positive thing. I’d think that mixing 50 and 60 Hz might not be entirely by mistake; it could be a compromise for compatibility with TV’s. If the switch would switch the system fully between PAL and NTSC, especially older TV’s could have serious problems showing the picture with the switch in the other position. Unfortunately, because of the mix the game might not run fully as expected, but that’s what compromise is about. However, lately the PAL/NTSC thing has become less of an issue, especially for PAL market; modern TV’s are expected to naturally take in 50 Hz signal, but increasingly TV’s are expected to double as screens for computers, which might only output 60 Hz. So there could be hope that one day, new clone consoles that have a region switches, would switch completely. By the way, did you mean that the SNES region switch also affects the NES part of the console?
For the SRT+? I'd stick with HDMI using seperate stereo audio (The red and white cables, reversed on one end. See video for details.). If you already own a later model of the original Retro Trio, I would reconsider upgrading, because later models fix at least two of the flaws I mentioned in the video.
Ah nice! Yeah stick with it if you're happy, especially if it is a later model (mine was 2015). The later model of the original (non-hdmi) has SNES-connectors for the main controller (just like the plus version), and has better compatibility (corrected speed in Mario Kart, and not the glitch at 6:13 in Starwing, etc). That's already a big improvement. I was unaware of that revision when I made this video.
Cool. I still have the version with genesis ports. But I am not bothered by the glitches as I use NTSC Games. Besides I have flash carts for Sega and SNES and multicarts for Nes. Thanks for the info!
Neosaurus, great video. Just an FYI later releases for the original Super Retro Trio has SNES plugs on the end of the controllers. That's the one I had. I was sweating bullets waiting for it's arrival because I didn't want the Sega ends. Question for you. Does Castlevania III work on your original? Mine has trouble with it.
Thanks! Glad to hear that, I never knew that they changed the controller input on the original Retro Trio too. That's great! Castlevania 3 does work, but I only tried it on an everdrive, and not the Japanese version with the additional sound chip, which doesn't run properly on a real NES as far as I know. I think I read that some Retro Trio's use a different NOAC (NES chip) where the sound is off.
Thanks! I totally agree. It's the systems output though. If it had a switch to 4:3, I would have shown that. And as mentioned, some TV's can squeeze it back to 4:3, but not all and I wanted this to be a faithful review, so I kept it the way it was.
The review I've been chasing. So it does play Duck Hunt! I can't believe how many so-called "retro gamers" have a zillion consoles but don't have a CRT -- not even a little 15" thing -- so they can't test light guns. I wonder if it can play any cheap Chinese NES flash carts on aliexpress?
