Genuinely one of the most concise factual informational video dumps I’ve ever experienced. I just bought this video camera on a gut whim and was prepared for a big learning curve. Anyways hank you man for creating this. You wanted to share and I learned so much, so quickly - I appreciate it. I appreciate the way you are. Props to you.
Just getting back into this myself after about 20 years. I actually found the app too and it is super helpful. You can also use it for focal lengths etc. Would love to see more of your Super 8 stuff.
Probably someone already wrote this, but you kinda misunderstood the concept of the Kodak Super8 camera. It records on tape but gives you an electrical view finder / screen to improve framing etc. The only thing that it does records digitally is the sound. You still need to get the films processed etc. But it's a cool camera anyway. Great video BTW! Keep them coming!
Really enjoyed your video, very informative and entertaining at the same time. I've had a Canon 814 XL-S that has been sitting on my desk as a paperweight for some years and recently have started to use it again and I'm loving it! I really enjoyed the skate video at the end, very well done and props for keeping up with the fast moving skateboarders, that is harder than it looks! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and look forward to more videos from you!

Hey Zack, I’m taking an intro level film production class at university this spring, but I’m super hungry to just experiment and film myself. Can you tell me a bit more about focusing? If I'm shooting say, a bride and groom at teh alter, than walking back down the aisle towards me, should I focus on (zoom in to get focus then zoom out) the couple at the alter? Or somethign even further behind them? And do I need to be chnaging my zoom a bunch as they're walking back towards me?
Sup g! Thanks for the video. So if I'm shooting inside/outside on 50d = should be on the sun setting, if im shooting 200t outside/inside it should remain on the tungsten setting? did you have to use any filters when using 200t film ? cheers
Zachary Bergamin I didn’t use any filters. Think of the sun/tungsten setting as a filter! So if you’re working with Tungsten film and you’re inside, you would use the sun filter to counter balance the tungsten film.
Good question, I think it depends on the venue you're filming at. A lot of time stages are pretty well lit, if exposed correctly w/ the right film it can be done! Lightmeter might help in that scenario.
I bought tungsten film on accident, but have no plans on using it indoors or under / in tungsten light. What do you think my results are gonna be, if I use it outdoors ? And should I leave the switch on the daylight or the lightbulb option ?!
what kinda of camera and film are you using? if you set to daylight, the camera’s internal 85 filter will flip into place to give the proper color temperature when yr shooting tungsten film in daylight. but generally those internal filters get dirty and old so its probably best to set the switch to tungsten so the internal filter is disengaged and use an good screw on 85 filter at the front of the lens, or you can color correct in post. The camera will read the film at different ASA values depending on which setting you have the switch on
hey! I got the exact same camera but when I go to adjust the focus, I don't see a difference in the viewfinder.. the focus of the image looking the same no matter how much I turn the focus on the lens any tips on that or an idea as to why that is?
hello zack want to get started in super 8mm film shooting i have someone offering me a nizo braun 4080 is this too much camera for me since i am a beginner and will it take the eckachrome kodak carttrige? should i keep looking for another model? any info would be help full
MegaKamandi That’s a awesome Super 8 camera, little more functionality then I personally desire. How much $$? I’d get the cheapest one for your first super 8 to make sure you enjoy it.
is it gonna be overexposed if i'm using 500t using this camera outside on a daylight? also what asa will the camera read? since canon 310xl only read 250 tungsten max.
jss 250ASA is perfect for 500T. Kodak recommends over exposing by one stop anyways for this film. You’ll get finer grain. The V3 color negative stocks have a lot of latitude so don’t worry about over exposing. If yr using the tungsten setting and filming outside use a screw on 85 filter or color correct in post.

What Super 8 camera? Maybe you have an auto focus function? Sometimes the view finder needs to be refocused as well to make sure you're seeing the correct focus.
@@jackloechner6850 Yes using distance markers is more accurate, typically in a run & gun situation with super 8 having the time to map out your distance can be a bottle neck. The app I mentioned in this video does help with that as well!
Jack Loechner You should be able to find a manual for the 310 on google. usually for focusing you would zoom all the way in to the subject and focus, then you can zoom out to how you want the image to be framed. @@metalfingersfilm E100 would be used outdoors, no correction needed. You can use any film anywhere, what you need to know is how to correct the film you're using for the situation you are in. Most Kodak color films are Tungsten but not all, there's two that are daylight natively, the 50D, the Ektachrome 100D. The more modern Super-8 cameras will "know" what type of film (Daylight or Tungsten) is put into it and will engage the compensating filter switch for use. So what you do with the switch is if you're going to be outdoors with Tungsten (T) film, use the "sun" (or whatever symbol that particular camera manufacturer used for outdoors) setting and it'll put the built in compensating filter into the optical path correcting the light to match the films native color balance. Uncorrected tungsten film in daylight will look blue, the compensating filter looks amber but to Tungsten film that level of additional orange compensation is what's needed for that film to make it correct (i.e. colors look natural). Then if you then move indoors you'd put the switch into the bulb position which takes it out, removing the correction since it is not needed for that situation.
