A lot of people hate that ending. I don't agree. I like it even though it's really sad. I cried like a baby and that's not something I'm used to feel while watching anything. It was genuine and complex. I'm thankful for that show.
The end is perfect because Dexter gets what he deserve. He destroyed everyone: Harry, Rita, because of him Astor, Cody and Harrison don't have a mother and... he destroyed Deb. In 4x05 Dexter says: "If Deb dies, I'll be lost" The ending makes sense especially in the last scene because the exile is a big (and fair) punition for a man like him, and because now he feels emotions but he finally understood the monster he is. Now Hannah and Harrison can restart a new life without a dangerous person. Bay Harbour Butcher case is closed. He didn't get caught by police, so he lives like any serial killer (like Tooth Fairy in 6x03, remember? That is the end for serial killer who didn't get caught by police... alone...)
But that was just a "dream" for him. I mean, people like Dexter cannot stop being what hey are, he sure wanted to be a better person, but he is a psychopath, he's dangerous. Remember in the finale where Dexter says "I never saw a miracle"? That is the moment where Dex opens his eyes to the truth. And let's say it, he killed, destroyed lives and deserves to have an happy ending?
They could have put the serial killer of season 6 at the same time than Hannah, just after the death of Trinity. And for the last season, Dexter could have been the one hunted down by Angel and Debra (who could kill him in the end.) It would have been as great as the season one to end things that way. And yet, they could have made something after it, a new series, Harry. His kid living at oncle Angel's house becoming what his father was before him, finding back Hannah and later Debra working now at FBI consultant like agent Lundy. They could have build another series with so much potential, just thinking about those ideas is blowing my mind to know it won't happen :(

Re-watch it. It's not as bad as you think when you do. Sometimes it's better to know what's around the corner. You can find things that you didn't notice your first time through.
I just realise with the time I have left and the amount of episodes, 2014 begins off signifying "end". In 2014 I will have reached the end of Dexter and The Mentalist. Two Shows that have changed me completely! Its rather emotional when I think about it :(

Rita is Debra for sure, although Lundy’s death was fairly emotional. Rita’s death probably was the most emotionally convicting, the way dexter finds her in the tub like that. It was purely awful, and it was possibly even more sad seeing Michael c halls acting performance when dexter kills that random dude in the bathroom at the start of the next season. He has a hard time showing emotion yet after he killed that guy he just started moaning a moan that literally sent chills down my spine, to see his complete frustration and knowledge of the fact there’s nothing he can do even though you know, with him being the meticulous persona he is, all he wanted was to do something to change what happened.
Once in a while a track comes along that you know you'll play in your head whenever you're feeling lonely or elated. I also really loved the different variations of this track which were played at different moments. I remember there being an acoustic guitar variant too.
