I think a really cool detail that I actually didn't realize the first time I saw this movie is that, not only is Wallaces office entirely lined with wood, but the interior of his entire megabuilding, all the archives and various spaces, are made of wood. It's the ultimate testament to the excess that this person lives in, and how disconnected he is from the rest of the world, where people or replicants "born" post-blackout have never even seen a picture of a tree.

There's only three pre-shorts, I think. The Nexus 8 were given a normal life span, they rebelled and blew up the database that registered them so they can only be identified by the code in their right eyes, replicant production was outlawed, society was crumbling because of labor shortages, Wallace was granted legal right to start production, Bautista's character was identified as a fugitive during a streetfight, then 2049 picks up. If anyone was wondering.

I think JOI not developing past her programming is a valid interpretation of her character. But I also think the scene where Kay interacts with the advertisement could just as easily be a mirror of the earlier scene where Deckard meets the copy of Rachel. Just because Wallace can recreate her with perfect detail doesn't mean he can recreate the bond that she and Deckard shared. And even if Rachel WAS indeed *designed* to fall in love with Deckard as Wallace suggests... does it really matter?

I prefer the interpretation that Deckard is human because I like the irony of the human acting far more robotic then the replicants he was trying to kill in the first movie.

Imperial Waltz . . . Well said. People who don't like the movie cannot pick this obvious fact up.

Fantastic rumination. I really enjoyed this one.
However, as weird as it sounds, I have to disagree with you on the whole possible sequel thing. I actually thought they wrapped up the core dramatic narrative very well, similar to the first blade runner with how the arcs of deckard and Rachel were “complete”, even though the larger story scope of the world wasn’t resolved. But I think that’s also the point, the world here both matters but doesn’t matter, like how you said in the end it doesn’t matter to the core point of the story of deckard is a replicant or not. That’s just my scattered thought

I think Ana was told that lie to for her safety.Or the first birth it certainly is possible it didn't go smoothly as planned, and there was complications. I love how these movies leave things open to interpretation and open ended.

The BR books by KW Jeter are good reads. Not for casual reading or for casual fans. I also recommend the vintage game from Westwood.
I always thought of Tyrell as both amoral and curious. He was curious at seeing the Boight-Kampff test in action ("Indulge me."), curious to see if Deckard would figure it out about Rachel and how. Even was curious enough to let Sebastian into his home, just to see how Sebastien beat him at chess.
When I rewatched the beginning with K and Sapper Morton, I keep thinking Sapper was living as a sentinel over Rachel's remains. Not just hiding as a fugitive but holding vigil out of respect and fear of what someone like Wallace would try to do.
The scene with Deckard and Wallace was very human, especially when Wallace present Deckard with a replacement Rachel. Poor Deckard, who had spent so many years worn, tired and alone. And a chance to have her back. Even if it wasn't his Rachel, it's still *a* Rachel. To Wallace, it must've been a perfect lure. And I swear I can imagine Deckard consider Wallace's bargain.
Just as soul-crushing is K seeing the giant Joi billboard after his Joi was smashed. I always thought the appeal of Joi was not her visual appeal of the ability to mod it, but her ability to emulate human/social interaction enough for people to believe her real. I can't think of Joi without thinking of the upcoming Gatebox.

I think Anna's ilness is only a cover, but even She doesn't know it. But now that you mention it, option 3 can be possible too.
Enjoyed the film and the rumination. Good job Lore!

Wallace was such and interesting villain.I loved such a powerful villain feels so inadequate because he doesn't have the goods like Tyrell had. Wallace is blind figuratively and literally by his God Complex. He is blinded to the fact that the replicants he wants to make there's a revolutionary movement that plotting to rebel and overthrow him.

I think that the villain Wallace is a great villain because he is flawed. He is nothing without his replicant body guards. It could be a really cool plot point for the next movie if he gets into a situation where he cannot defend himself without his replicants.

I think Joi do develop past her programing during her final moment, that final spark before Luv kills her. Yes she didn't at the start of the movie but at the end of fatality she do realized that her love for K is authentic. She can just look at K and says nothing but she did say it and that final spark/moment interest me with Joi and K relationship.

You're absolutely on to something in your understanding of reality and its relevance to the overarching thematic structure of the narrative. In this story things are real when they leave an impact, not when they are deemed real by society.

Great analysis. The film is essentially a sequel about the concept of “being a sequel”; it displays how the sacrifice of one’s particularity thereby unites one with the original essence of the universal genus from which one was derived. Fabulous film.

Man, I really wish you would do more ruminations on games. It seems like you've been doing movies and tv shows. We've had some pretty interesting games come out recently...

You do realize that Lore doesn't decide what to ruminate on? Patrons vote on that like a year in advance. Also Lore is doing these in a certain order. If you go to the website you can see the schedule with a lot of games.

By chance the algorithms brought me back here! 🤣
One thing I heard about BR2049 that was disappointing to me, that if true then I wish they would've kept in is that during the final scene with K, he was supposed to be reciting his baseline.
He would've stopped mid-way thru as a little confirmation of his death. 😥

I’m pretty sure Deckard is supposed to be human in this movie. A big plot point in this movie is that there was a half replicant half human child.

Don't become a prisoner to habit. Weigh in on things like Solo to keep it fresh. You gotta give an extra 10% more than the regular clock watchers or you won't get the bonus or promotion. Even here in youtubeland.

This movie deftly deals with the lack of answers to the questions it presents to us. It gives enough elements to ask these questions, but let us decide what are the answers. The characters present us a thesis, but the course of the actions make us systematically doubt their veracity. A wonderful film to spark very interesting discussions.

Excellent work, sir. I am surprised that the possibility of K being the child is not speculated on more. As far as I remember from the two screenings I attended it is still possible that he was the child. However, it does not matter in the grand scheme of things as this is a very interpretive work and I love it for that. :)

The K and Joy storyline made me sad as it captured the current trend of men seeking artificial affection in the absence of feminine women today. Services like porn, escorts, prostitution and sex dolls will only grow like they did in the Blade Runner world.

And what did you want him to do, break out in full court Joker? How about in song a la 30 Seconds to Mars? Wallace was an elite, not only an elite but an intelligent elite. If you look at anyone like Steve Jobs and others, they have their isms. Tesla did. Others did and do. Wallace had the world by the balls and he knew it...except when it came to the creation of his army. That fed into that quirk he had and Jared was perfect in his portrayal.

he might have been on a spychologycal level, but he was boring to watch which took away from the movie. I don´t know what he could have done differently, but he lacked charisma. Originally David Bowie was supposed to play that part. I have no idea if that would have been better or not, but I´m telling you: he would have had that charisma...

Honestly, I felt like there was about half an hour to 45 minutes worth of good story in there, and then a few hours of fluff tacked on top.
However, nothing can save this movie from the horrendously obnoxious music (if you want to call it that). Both my friend and I had a headache by the time we got out, and all we could talk about afterwards was the constant droning 'whooomp, whooomp' that seemed to extend throughout the entirety of every action sequence. I’ve never seen another movie with such an annoying background soundtrack.
