VEX IQ 97300J Pitching In 82 Points Catapult - New Robot: Spitfire

- This is our robot Spitfire scoring 82 Points in a Driver Skills match. Spitfire uses only 5 of the allowable six motors. Two motors on the drivetrain, two on the catapult, and one on the intake. More videos will be coming soon. Spitfire has a 1:1 drivetrain as well as a 1:1 intake, and uses a choo-choo mechanism for the catapult.
Good luck this season!
Great robot-well done
I have a question..
In your opinion, do you think spitfire is better than osprey or vice versa?
I would think that spitfire is better for teamwork because it scores balls more consistently. However osprey would be better for skills because it can get more balls into the high goal even if it misses some.
I think that while Osprey is good, Spitfire is much better because it is much more consistent. If you watch the videos, Osprey will often miss one or two, while Spitfire never does. This is because the catapult doesn't care about the variance in things like squishiness and weight between the balls while the flywheel does, and will often miss the goal because of it. Also, the catapult is simpler because it has less mechanisms and less stuff to go wrong as well as less edge cases. I'm also pretty sure that the catapult can score more points than the flywheel robot because it can score faster. Does that make sense?
@@Joseph973 yes, I see
How do you stop the catapult ripping itself out of the gears?
Although different catapults are different and there isn’t a “one size fits all” solution, I've found two main solutions that I’ve found to work. You can either make the catapult stronger or divert the force somewhere else. I would suggest making the force go somewhere else not into the catapult. If you look at Fling (starting on page 35), you’ll notice that there is an axle above the catapult that stops it just before it reaches the point where it would fully extended and put all the force on the catapult mechanism. So if you put something like that on your robot to put all the force into an axle right before it would usually break the mechanism, it should help keep it from breaking itself.
may i ask, what is the gear ratio of your catapult
The gear ratio on this catapult is 3:1, meaning the motor spins three times for every one time the catapult spins. However, a 2:1 gear ratio would also work just fine without issues.
Why did you choose to only get 2 balls into your shooter at a time? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to get 4?
I think having four would result in the chance of having an extra ball land in the firing mechanism, making shots harder to shoot.
Maybe there could be some storage system added?
Yes it would be more efficient to get four at a time. If I back the second two down into the intake, they won't get in the way of the first two.
How do i make it?
Would it be possible to post how you made this robot ?
