    This was the first lowFODMAP book I bought and it helped me so much. It gives you lots of vegan specific information about the diet, IBS and the practical issues of it all. It also gives you some recipes, which serve as great inspiration.

    IBS affects around 11% of the global population, (that’s one in every 9 people you meet!!) so let’s not be embarrassed about it! I want this channel to be a safe, open and kind place for people dealing with IBS. We’re far from alone, so let’s ask questions, share advice and feel better together xx
    ▽ What are FODMAPs?
    The term FODMAP is an acronym, derived from "Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols”. They are short carbohydrates found in lots of healthy foods, which the bacteria in your intestines will break down, producing gas in the process.
    For unclear reasons, some people are particularly sensitive to this and experience painful and embarrassing symptoms such as bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, constipation and fatigue. FODMAP restriction has been found to improve symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID).
    ▽ What is a Low-FODMAP Diet?
    The Low-FODMAP diet usually involves carefully cutting the down the amount of FODMAPs you consume over a day and at one time for 2-6 weeks until your symptoms resolve or at least become manageable. Then you “re-challenge” each type of FODMAP individually to see how sensitive you are to them. Thankfully most people can tolerate some or all of the FODMAPs at certain levels or combinations.
    ▽ Is it forever?
    NO! From this feedback, you can reintroduce foods in a way that won’t set off your symptoms. Your tolerance will likely improve over time, so you can always retest foods when you feel up to it.
    ▽ Resources For Vegan Low-FODMAPers
    Thee app I’ve found to be invaluable since starting the low-FODMAP diet.
    The first is the official app* from The Monash University. It’s the easiest and most up-to-date way to check what foods are A-okay and how big your portion size can be. Measurements come in grams, as well as "cups", which is great as a brit!

    Hi, Carrie! Thank you so much for the delightful and detailed review of my book! You make a good point about the measurements in the recipes. Unfortunately, the way we measure in the US doesn't yet mesh with way people measure in most other countries, and our package sizes and ingredients aren't universal either. We have a long way to go here. :)
    Your comment about the recipes not being trendy (and possibly being a generational thing) made me chuckle. I'm not an especially trendy cook -- I prefer to stick with tried-and-true recipes rather than ride the tide of the latest food fad. My aim with the book was to provide solid basic recipes that readers can prepare on a daily basis and adapt in multiple ways to suit their individual digestive needs and tastes.
    I'm sorry the first part of the book made you cry. I laid bare my heart (along with the science), and I guess that came through loud and clear. :) I wanted to convey that I understand firsthand what it's like to be vegan with IBS, and to also offer a shoulder to lean on for people in the same boat who feel alone, unsupported, or misunderstood. However, I also hope the message of hope, along with a clear road map for how to proceed and succeed, came through as well.
    Thank you again, Carrie! Your videos are a true joy!

      Oh, one more thing about the measurements I forgot to mention. The recipes are, for the most part, really flexible and forgiving. So exact measurements aren't essential for a great result. As long as they're in the general ballpark, the recipes will turn out just fine and still be in the low-FODMAP range.

      Oh wow, it's made my day that you replied to this video!! I really meant it as a very positive review! I think I cried in part because it made me face up to how horrible it's been having IBS for a third of my life and there isn't an easy way around it. I can't thank you enough for your book though, it helped me so much when it was all so overwhelming xx
      p.s. Sorry I mispronounced your surname!

    I love this small fodmap diet community on UA-cam. Everyone is so nice, and helpful. I discovered it when I uploaded my IBS mending meals video. Loved this video, I had to sub.

      Thanks for the sub! I agree, it's so good to see it growing on here, along with general awareness. I know if I'd stumbled across the lowFODMAP diet on UA-cam when it was first published I could have saved myself years of suffering! And I subbed you back btw ☺️ x

    I really like the book. I have not eaten strictly low FODMAP but it has nice recipes and great information. I am currently looking at it as I am going through some digestive issues right now, and hope that even if not strict, I can get my symptoms under control again with guidance from the book.

    I've been putting off trying Low-Fodmap for a while now, when foods are bad for me and I need to restrict them then I end up binging and it triggers previous ED. Eating out or when I'm away from home is so hard to, I just end up going "Ahh screw it, it'll be fine and then I feel terrible!" I just watched another of your videos before this one where you say you put up with feeling so bad for years and tolerated it but when you started to feel better 3 weeks in to the diet it made it all worth while - Made me realise I've been doing the same, I literally look 7 months pregnant and am so fed up of feeling so clogged up, heavy and lethargic... Something I've tolerated for since I was very young. AAAND it's so much worse since going vegan, I was getting upset at the thought of having to eat meat again. Did you do this without a dietitian? I want to start it now but it's all so overwhelming. Any other bits of advice would be so grateful. I'm so glad to have stumbled across your channel, thank you Carrie

      I'm so glad my videos could help! I had IBS while it was living in halls at Uni and the shared bathrooms made it such a stressful experience 😣 I hope low FODMAP quickly calms things down for you xx

    See, I told you the review was going to be wonderful :) I've had this book sitting in my Amazon shopping basket for weeks now, unsure whether I actually want to buy it...
    When I was first confronted with FODMAPs I bought the ebook by The FODMAP Friendly Vegan. It doesn't contain anything revolutionary but it was a good browse and I keep going back to it for inspiration (just like with other cookbooks).
    Meanwhile, I've somewhat found my way through the reintroduction phase and will cook myself a medium batch of chickpeas tonight to see how well I can tolerate them. The small portion didn't upset my gut at all and I can't wait to be reunited with my beloved hummus one of these days

      Sorry, I wrote a reply to your comment back when you posted it but didn't realise it didn't actually go up! Thank you for your review of my review 😉 Did it make you decide to buy the book or give it a miss?
      Would you recommend I get the fodmap friendly vegan ebook? How are you doing after the not-great reaction to the chickpeas? xx

    I have been considering this one but I do not want a book that emphasizes tofu. I don't even know if I like tofu. I heard that it did. What do you think?

    Carrie! I've just worked it out! Our cups are 2 tbsp bigger than Australian cups! That's quite a big difference so thank you for pointing that out. I usually measure everything in cups for ease but that's a bad idea now. I think if I need to use cups I'll just take out 2 tbsp. Also, UK cups are roughly 2 tsp bigger than American ones.
    And, an Australian tbsp is bigger than ours but an Australian tsp is smaller than ours (they have 4 tsp to a tbsp). Also, both an American tbsp and tsp are smaller than ours. So, in most cases we're greedy buggers I think!
    Thank you got encouraging me to look that up! I hope this makes sense, because to my brain fogged head it's hard to understand :) xx

    • @laurabrockway2810
      @laurabrockway2810 6 років тому

      Now I don't know if the cup thing is completely wrong! The American cup difference is correct but I've read a lot of conflicting information on the Australian ones. If it is that big of a difference, the ¼ cup of chickpeas I've been having is too much, as with the ½ cup oats. That's super confusing, sorry if I've just confused you too, I was trying to help but I'm in more of a pickle now than to begin with! xx

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  6 років тому +1

      And this is why I like grams! 😂 I think the author is American, but then I don't know if she was basing it on Austrailian guidelines and converting it?!
      I do know Monash say it's all relative, so the "low-FODMAP" means "tolerated by most people with IBS". So some people can tolerate more and others less. So if your current 1/4 cup of chickpeas or 1/2 cup of oats are working well for you, that's all that matters xx

  • @Jodiekallas
    @Jodiekallas 12 днів тому

    I'm confused about the red pepper sauce- the Monash app has red peppers listed as a "avoid" (all but the smallest portions). How can a sauce made from red peppers be okay?

    • @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject
      @CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject  52 хвилини тому

      Honestly, this has been such an annoying issue creating low FODMAP recipes to share. Monash update the app from time to time and will completely change the green serving sizes for different foods. They could have retested a sample of peppers from different countries in different seasons, but I don't understand how the serving sizes can be so drastically different 🤷
