I have a 2000 4Runner and I had the valve cover gaskets replaced at the Toyota dealer and the same thing happened; they torqued down too much on the passenger side rear bolt and it cracked it. They were good about it , they replaced with a brand new valve cover. I applaud you for taking on these tough jobs .

Thanks! I'm surprised that happened at a dealership and they fixed it too without problems.

Thanks for this tip! I am redoing my entire cooling system. After having a leaking water pump, I decided to do the front-end of the engine. However, I ran into an overheating issue, as the thermostat failed. So I replaced the necessary parts. I am now finding myself rebuilding the top-end like you did; except, I will be adjusting my valves! This is a whole new thing, as I have only adjusted four cylinder motors, and never a V6. It should be a good experience. Take good care bro!

Good luck with that! Thanks for watching and I hope you take care as well!

Don't forget the fan clutch is also a source of overheating. If you notice it able to spin by pushing it before the first start of the day, than it needs to be replaced.

    Hey man,
Can I ask - did you do the FRONT camshaft plugs as well? Or just the rear ones? The one one the front passenger side seems impossible to get out (due to clearance from the radiator mount in front of it). Just curious if you did the front ones as well, and if you didn't - was it for the same reason, or some other reason?
Anyone here have a response? Thanks!

I did do the front, I just used adjusting pliers with electrical tape wrapped so it doesn't scratch. I don't remember anything getting in the way for the passenger front one.

Have you had leaks? They are known for that. Even after changing the seals & using toyota FIPG I still had leaking. Just recently I saw I video showing the oil cooler where it bolts to the block & guess what, that was the source of the leak. There was a large o-ring & a seal for the banjo bolt. My o-ring was cracked and came out in pieces. Mine is a 4x4 and you have to go in through the driver wheel well with the wheel removed. It is TIGHT!

Luckily I don't have to deal with that! The only leak I've had is the front diff, just needed to tighten the drain plug and that was fixed. Obviously there was seeping from the valve covers and that's why I did them, but they're good now!

I don't, they are very exposed with the plenums off though, I imagine they just pop in and out with the clip off. I've heard a lot of good things about motor west remanufactured injectors.

Haha yeah, it's hard sending that much money to a faceless person, but it's always been OEM so I can't complain 😂 and have to give a shout-out.
