Why does he choose to sweep to the right and not left (where he has an overbook and trapped the arm)? One would assume the opponent can base easier on his left where the arm isn’t overbooked. Anyone got ideas?
Edit: maybe it’s got to do with opponents head position? Since it’s leaning towards the right, perhaps there’s more weight that side and therefor easier to sweep that direction…im guessing.

I was thinking that too - or at least thinking what approach would he take if the opponent posts out with the arm to prevent the turn... Though that's just the game i suppose :)

I think it depends on weigh and balance, you could really go either way depending on where you and your opponent's weight is and how the weights are shifting....It looks like he JJ would have to switch his hips the other way to go the side of the trapped arm...

If he posts with the left hand the triangle is there. Maybe 🫤

I thinks it’s because he’s already lifting his elbow on the underhook to make it more difficult to free the arm. Also pulling down on the head is more effective, where the head goes the body follows.

Yup same question, seems like free arm will post and prevent the sweep. As someone previously mentioned, maybe this is a triangle bait, but jumping a triangle from butterfly hooks seems much harder than from normal guard.
