  • Once I began to understand how Butterfly Guard works, in terms of structure and leverage, it enhanced my understanding of every position on the ground and also how many throws and takedowns work, as well. In this video, I do my best, in a short amount of time, to convey important principles with technical examples. I hope this is helpful.

My goal is to one day have a job with BJJ. I hope to teach it one day. Sounds crazy from someone who's only attended a few classes I'll start training regularly in a few months when I'm able to.i understand all the statistics. 95% of white belts give up before becoming a blue belt and 99% of blue belts give up before becoming a black belt. Obviously those numbers aren't exact but you get the message. I don't care how hard it is. O don't care how long it will take (15 years?) I'll be fine with it. I love BJJ . It's a lifestyle. I also hope to do some judo and wrestling training to learn takedowns. I know a good judo school near me and my uncle coached wrestling so confident in my goals. Love your videos Eli. They're very useful.

It took me a long time. It’s a lot of work. And I’m not naturally athletic and I don’t learn particularly fast. It took me 16 years to get my black belt. I teach full time and I’ve become pretty successful. Jiu-Jitsu is a powerful thing 🙏

7':40" small point Eli just said quickly that most white belts will miss but it is so important. ".. Once [the combos] start happening, it's really fun".
This really doesn't make a whole lot of sense until it does. And what it means is that literally it gets more fun than it already is. You feel what has been dubbed "flow". So drill drill drill till you flow.

  • @hermixtonen

I am a purple belt and before covid came, and I was rolling daily , I started to notice my butterfly guard coming together. But I have a question for you , I notice that when sweeping you try to take your shoulder laterally to the floor to 3 o’clock and kick back vertically with the butterfly hook to 12 o’clock. I had thought I saw Gordon Ryan talk about the importance of, once you have a good undertook,/overhook/butterfly hook combo , driving your shoulder back to the mat towards 12 o’clock (as opposed to 3 oclock). I started doing this and it seemed to make all the difference, especially on really heavy opponents. It would just off balance them so much by bringing their head way towards 12 o’clock that they had no base, and then it just becomes super easy to flip them over to the side with the butterfly hook . Kind of opposite of what you are saying here (in my case I was driving my shoulder to 12 o’clock and flipping them laterally with my butterfly hook towards 9 o’clock , or 3 o’clock if my butterfly hook is my right foot) . The big advantage I saw was that no matter how big the person was, as long as my underhook and overhook were tight , they could not stop me from being able to take my own shoulder to 12 o’clock, and they were obligated to come with me because they had zero base in front of them . But when I try to take my shoulder to 3 or 9 o’clock, they have some base with their knees and can resist a bit
