How Butterfly Guard Works - A Micro-Seminar | Jiu-Jitsu Techniques with Eli Knight

- Once I began to understand how Butterfly Guard works, in terms of structure and leverage, it enhanced my understanding of every position on the ground and also how many throws and takedowns work, as well. In this video, I do my best, in a short amount of time, to convey important principles with technical examples. I hope this is helpful.

Supernatural survival gear has awesome stuff. Super cool and good quality...and you wont find a nicer guy than Kent Peters, though Eli comes close 😆

You, Sir, are a phenomenal instructor, always a expert presentation!
Great didatics bro. Garcia would be proud of you. Cheers from Brazil
Awesome. Many gems in there, thank you
Nice overview, Eli. Thank you! Would love to see you put out a more detailed video exploring the fine points, common mistakes and other options from butterfly guard.
Very short & sweet video

From Australia
Really good video. I love this format. Tons of information in such a small clip 👍
Look at it like a structure !!!! My philosophy of bjj has just expanded . Great advice and not even 2 minutes in .
I appreciate it greatly! 🙌
Excellent details as usual! Thank you :D
Outstanding Training
I've just started playing around more with butterfly guard so this was great timing. Really great info, loved understanding more of the concepts versus just technique.
I’m glad to hear it was useful. Thank you for the comment!
Nice video! Thanks for the content
Nice work! I love Butterfly & Marcelo.
Man, super helpful, thanks!
Thanks Dude this really helps. Because I’m trying other variations and this is what WE all need. 🤙

That Darce is savage
Very good job like always master! I hope i can fight (with all respect master) with you. Oss 🙏
Purple belt here 👋🏼 I’ve been watching your videos since I first put a white belt on. Great content as always! Thank you!
Thank you! That’s so awesome to hear
you explain really well therefore subscribed
Thank you very much, your great technique fascinates me and it helps me a lot to add new things and techniques to the repertoire. What you share, gives me new goals to improve my jiu jitsu No GI.
I really appreciate that! Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for all your hard work. I will drill these moves and hopefully be able to execute them during my bjj classes.
Thank you for watching. I hope they come in useful!
🤯 so good, thank you 🤙
Managed to catch the darce one last night..Thank you for this! Still need work on my sweeping angle tho..
Awesome! Thank you for letting me know.
Love that sneaky Darce...
Great info. I'm a new white belt (4 weeks in) and since I end up on my back most of the time I'm trying to learn how to sweep and play the butterfly game. The advice about looking at posture as a structure makes sense :)
Bacon I feel your pain lol. I’m two weeks in and will implement this and see what happens
@@jrowell2323 did it help?
Time to release your own DVD! You got me curious about the way you understand the butterfly and your depth of understanding regarding the rest of the positions and sweeps...
I have some dvds in the works with BJJ Fanatics currently, but they are self defense based.
@@KnightJiuJitsu Indeed i just checked. Thank you for the info, i had no idea :)
Ty sensei.
My goal is to one day have a job with BJJ. I hope to teach it one day. Sounds crazy from someone who's only attended a few classes I'll start training regularly in a few months when I'm able to.i understand all the statistics. 95% of white belts give up before becoming a blue belt and 99% of blue belts give up before becoming a black belt. Obviously those numbers aren't exact but you get the message. I don't care how hard it is. O don't care how long it will take (15 years?) I'll be fine with it. I love BJJ . It's a lifestyle. I also hope to do some judo and wrestling training to learn takedowns. I know a good judo school near me and my uncle coached wrestling so confident in my goals. Love your videos Eli. They're very useful.
It took me a long time. It’s a lot of work. And I’m not naturally athletic and I don’t learn particularly fast. It took me 16 years to get my black belt. I teach full time and I’ve become pretty successful. Jiu-Jitsu is a powerful thing 🙏
@@KnightJiuJitsu I have the option to train 5 times a week but how often should I train when I start training regularly?
@@jaredhonegger9918 As much as your body allows to! The more the merrier, but remember, safety and health first.
@@ElNightmareYT I'm young and I feel like I could start with 3 days a week. I'll see how that goes. Hope to be training 5 days a week withing a year but I'll listen to my body and add days to the week when I'm ready.
Jared Honegger - so much depends on the type of training, intensity, duration, etc. But definitely listen to your body and don’t injure yourself!
Nice 🖒. Thank you 🖒👍👌
Another good video dude! I watch one at night b fo bed
👍
Thank you bro
OSS Sensei. Top
Thank you very much here's a sub and like 😀👍
Thank you so much!
Different but I like it!
7':40" small point Eli just said quickly that most white belts will miss but it is so important. ".. Once [the combos] start happening, it's really fun".
This really doesn't make a whole lot of sense until it does. And what it means is that literally it gets more fun than it already is. You feel what has been dubbed "flow". So drill drill drill till you flow.
Yes! 🙏🙏🙏
Damn why did I buy that butterfly dvd
I am a purple belt and before covid came, and I was rolling daily , I started to notice my butterfly guard coming together. But I have a question for you , I notice that when sweeping you try to take your shoulder laterally to the floor to 3 o’clock and kick back vertically with the butterfly hook to 12 o’clock. I had thought I saw Gordon Ryan talk about the importance of, once you have a good undertook,/overhook/butterfly hook combo , driving your shoulder back to the mat towards 12 o’clock (as opposed to 3 oclock). I started doing this and it seemed to make all the difference, especially on really heavy opponents. It would just off balance them so much by bringing their head way towards 12 o’clock that they had no base, and then it just becomes super easy to flip them over to the side with the butterfly hook . Kind of opposite of what you are saying here (in my case I was driving my shoulder to 12 o’clock and flipping them laterally with my butterfly hook towards 9 o’clock , or 3 o’clock if my butterfly hook is my right foot) . The big advantage I saw was that no matter how big the person was, as long as my underhook and overhook were tight , they could not stop me from being able to take my own shoulder to 12 o’clock, and they were obligated to come with me because they had zero base in front of them . But when I try to take my shoulder to 3 or 9 o’clock, they have some base with their knees and can resist a bit
Can you do the darce with thr right arm in that same position??
Nice
Coach Eli is the picasso of Juijuitsu
I don’t deserve that compliment but I’ll take it!
@@KnightJiuJitsu Thank you for all your great contents! Hands down, you provide the best contents and best coaching with a unique approach!
That really means a lot to me. I appreciate it greatly!
How do you call that half butterfly position , thank you
make that 4 hour video you mentioned
I know I'm gonna like this even before I watch it...clicked like
What to do against a beginner who tries to force a punch choke to pass the butterfly guard?
Done let them flatten you in butterfly guard, and if they do, regain your position quickly or switch to a half guard system
If you gave this a thumbs down you likely suck at jiu-jitsu 🤣
❤️❤️❤️
😆 😆 😆
Do you know any sweeps that will work if your opponent has 2 functioning legs?
Either nervous or a very fast talker 😂. D’arce choke is nice
