Probably because it was so advanced, so sophisticated. I mean, anybody can play Smoke on the Water on their guitar at home. Very few can play Rat Bat Blue...... Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are were their zenith studioalbums, with Made in Japan in between as the best live album ever. After that Burn, which was slightly less super, And then the decline.... Don't get me wrong, any DP album is better than most hard rock albums out there, but 1971-1973 were their peak years.

One thing amazing about it is that the band was in turmoil when this was made. Certain people weren't even speaking to each other and were recording their parts more or less in isolation. It was the last album with Gillan and Glover until Perfect Strangers came out in the mid-80s, some 12 years later.

Deep Purple is under appreciated in the States. Blackmore and Gillan each got sick on subsequent tours , then the lineup change when Made in Japan was peaking, and Who Do We Think We Are was dropped , Woman From Tkyo, people liked it but then they change singers, and fans wanted the Made in Japan lineup, though Burn was fantastic, and got airplay. They were very well accepted in Europe, Eastern Europe, Sweden and Japan at the time, probably to this day. Plus they were loud and they were appealing mostly to males, parcticularly aspiring guitarists, and noone played the keys like Jon Lord R.I.P., not to mention both Ians and Roger at the top of their games. I ramble on. Its my view. Many ask the same question, why are they not more popular.

I always thought this was the best track on the album. Jon lords playing on this track and a the album as a whole was superb! What was noticeable on the album was the lack of Blackmore solos, a gap that mr Lord seemed happy to fill. The main rif sounds like a faster version of WFTokyo. Ian’s drumming was outstanding. Always thought Paice’s drumming was in a league of its own. All those jazz influences…. Great vid!

Love Deep Purple back then, but overall, I was more of a fan of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow material, especially the Ronnie James Dio years. Ritchie Blackmore got less bluesy and added classical elements to his playing in the Rainbow years, and Dio just even brought more depth to Blackmore's writing.
