There are rubber brushes for scrubbing shampoo into a dog's fur that work great for dealing with shedding. You might want to look into getting a Kong ZoomGroom or something similar. Should cut down the post bath deshedding to only half an eternity.

This makes me think about interspecies friendship and how far we've gotten with dogs. A wild wolf would've easily bitten her or any groomer's face off, but due to the wonders of domestication, Happy was more than willing to nonchalantly tolerate a human doing to her body what she innevitably assumed to be a bunch of pure nonsense.

Aside from being on the frontlines of rescue, we also work towards public awareness, which often includes debunking myths and breaking down stereotypes about dog meat trade survivors. 6 years ago when she was rescued, she would have never trusted anyone to get this close to her, much less bathe her. @@daniellewoolley8607remember not all Asians est dogs because this is fear mongering tactic rather it's in select parts and mostly kept to the rural country side where their are people super hungry and will eat anything.
Heck white people used to eat horse until the Christian's came in and change that for them granted only select people still eat horse in France just like select people who do have money will eat dog because they eat it not out of hunger but more like they can just like they eat shark fin.

@@mercedesvelasquez8781In fairness the organisation who facilitated her adoption do work to prevent dogs from being used as meat but as you point out, eating animals that aren't livestock and cruelly treating them is common in so many parts of the world. Also the meat market is definitely not the commonest market/abuse that dogs in Korea are rescued from - like most other countries, puppy mills are a huge problem and in fact there's been a horrific one exposed recently by an animal rights group in Korea where they had over a thousand dogs, all malnourished and most injured due to horrendous living conditions. People should really stop assuming the whole "dogs are bred for meat, huh" about Asian countries when most dogs are actually bred to be sold as puppies, same as elsewhere.

@@daniellewoolley8607 I agree. I'm surprised so many dog lovers don't see that this dog has PTSD. They must not understand how dogs in the meat industry are treated. They're misreading her behavior as "good" when clearly she is broken and shut down emotionally. She isn't showing abject fear because she is far past that stage. This is what trauma can look like in a dog (or really in any animal, including humans) once they've given up and accept their fate.

Jindo is pronounced “jean-doe” and they are said to be able to house-break themselves (learn to pee outside the house) very quickly. They are not a popular breed to own in Korea, unfortunately, because many people consider them kind of like a mountain dog or a common stray. Koreans typically don’t eat dog meat - it was a necessity of war/hardship but it is still available. Korean history is filled with poverty and strife, and because of that, not many people had pets until recently.
Dogs are still feared by a lot of people - especially older people - and are not often properly trained. Many dogs are tied up their whole lives and not seen as “part of the family”. Recently, there has been an increase in dog ownership but most people in Korea live in apartments. If dogs are not properly socialized and trained, they can be aggressive and owners don’t know how to care for them, so they abandon them at shelters often.
Puppy mills and pet shops are very common here, and not many people want mutts or mixed breeds. South Korea doesn’t have animal rights/protection laws, so organizations like KARA often have to take matters into their own hands and rescue dogs from large breeders/farms. TNR does sort of exist, but there are way too many stray cats and dogs.
I rescued my cat from a shelter and cats face harsh conditions a lot of the times, too. We have a lot of stray cats that don’t get vaccinated/neutered/spayed, and cats are feared more than dogs in some cases. They are seen as thieves around large open-air markets, which are really common here in Korea (where they sell fish and chicken, etc.).
Pets are becoming more beloved, but there is still a long way to go. The former President Moon Jae-In adopted a rescue dog and promoted animal welfare. Most people want breeds like poodles (that don’t shed) and other small dogs like Pomeranian, Maltese, etc. and medium and large sized dogs aren’t as common. There aren’t as many dog-friendly places, either, but dog parks are becoming more popular. A few dog-bite incidents in the news have often sparked fear of dogs in people, so socialization is harder.
Shiba (inu means dog in Japanese and is pronounced like ee-noo, so it’s fine to just say Shiba) are fairly common in Korea, too. But they aren’t scrutinized like the Jindo because they are seen as a little more “foreign” and expensive. Jindo are so common, people sometimes don’t regard them as a real breed here in Korea.
I’m glad you finally had a Jindo on here and had the opportunity to inform people about the breed! But it would be nice if the “Korean people eat dogs” stereotype would die off. It’s a sensitive subject and there are many many dog-lovers here, and many people and organizations are working hard to stop the inhumane dog markets.

Agree with most of what you said but Jindo is pronounced like it was said in the video jindo is spelled 진돗 not 잰돗, i have never heard it pronounced differently. Also the Jindo is considered a national treasure by the Korean government.
I think the major reason larger dogs are not adopted is because most koreans live in apartments, its difficult to have larger dogs in this situation.
As the poster above said, Korea has experienced a lot of change within 1 to 2 generations. My grandparents lived through colonization and a war that turned them into a 3rd world country and now their infrastructure is arguably better than America. There is an older generation that grew up in those tough times but the younger generations (probably millenial and onwards) that see dogs as companions and not food or a threat. When the last of the older generation passes on i think Korea will be completely changed. This thread should be pinned tbh, i dont like the impression the video gave.

@@Lost_Hwasal Oh I meant 진도 - the word jean in English is pronounced like 진 but she said it like GIN-do like the drink (with a short i). Yeah, I mostly agree with you! I live in Korea and am married to a Korean person whose family is very scared of animals because of the past stigma. I also have friends who own large dogs and live in an apartment. I’ve seen both the well-trained, well-loved apartment dogs as well as the dogs tied up in the country side. I’ve mostly seen jindo tied up living outside, whereas the small breeds like poodles and maltese are often only strolled around in their own strollers by their owners. A lot of the dogs at the shelters are also larger and mixed breeds. But many people who own dogs are hesitant to let people pet them for fear of someone getting bit and suing them, which causes them to not socialize their dogs properly, and then it causes even more issues.
I am American and also consider Korea’s infrastructure to be way better than the states in a lot of ways. It’s still a pervasive thought that Korea is just some poor country, which is not the case anymore. Most Americans think of Korea and immediately think “Korean war” but the country has rapidly improved since the 1980s in so many ways. People think Japan is way more advanced, while Japanese people still use really antiquated things like fax machines and cash for most transactions, whereas Korea is far more advanced in actually implementing new technology. More people know about Korea than ever, but still don’t understand the complicated history it has.

also people treating dogs as part of the family in south korea is mostly popularized by the younger generation. it's a very "new" concept! 10-20 years ago, we would never imagine a dog being housed in a family's home, pushed around in baby prams, more concerns for healthier dog food, and going to the vets. south korea has drastically changed over the years and the social part of it has yet to catch up to it. sure, not a lot of people around my age would consider eating a dog, but a lot of people in the older generation i know would swear by it that dog meat is healthy/good for you. (which I believe is wrong because of the type of tonics and herbs that go into the soup is what gives the true benefits, but i digress)
the organizations are trying to change the minds of the older generation and there's has been a lot of progress lately! but there's still a lot of ways to go. do all koreans eat dog meat? no. but are some of the elderly still clinging to the idea that we should keep our dog meat eating traditions despite the awful abuse aimed at these poor dogs? yeah. that's the change we still need to focus on.

The owner was so puzzled, then he found out that the previous owner of the dog, ONLY spoke Spanish and had trained the dog in Spanish. So, as soon as went home ,and said to the dog the typical commands of Go, come and sit, etc... in Spanish, the dog IMMEDIATELY responded. FINALLY. the dog had ONLY heard Spanish being spoken. Thrilled to see a Jindo on the channel Vanessa! I adopted my Jindo boy through FKD last year. He’s very true to his breed - calm, intelligent and loyal. Jindos usually have quite a high prey drive though. Mine has “caught” several rats on walks - esp in areas near transit hubs where people don’t discard trash properly. But he’s so calm and well-behaved in the house that people who come over point it out to me.
My absolute fave trait is that he’s so QUIET (normal for a jindo) especially compared to my past dogs - many of whom were herding breeds. He’s just super chill… unless he’s thinks someone is trying to break in (delivery person knocking loudly). And I absolutely love walking him - despite the prey drive - bc he’s so well-behaved and ignores 99% of dogs that bark at him. He’s also great at the dog park, though he prefers sniffing or digging to playing with other dogs most of the time.
Jindos are fiercely loyal but independent, so my boy isn’t fond of cuddles or kisses like other breeds. But tbh that suits my personality so we’re a good match lol… we like our own space but we’re besties!
My Dad passed away a few months ago and he was amazing. If I didn’t get out of bed until the afternoon, he didn’t mind waiting to be walked or fed. He would lay near my bed and just wait. I finally understand the “heart dog” thing. He’s definitely mine 🥺
Very thankful FKD brought him into my life and for great work they do!

T was born in a very poor part of Vietnam, where the dog meat trade was unfortunately practiced, but she also had a dog as a pet. One day her dog was stolen from their yard, in order to be used for the meat trade. Well later that night, T broke into the house where all the dogs were being kept, rescued her own dog, and set all the other ones loose. No idea what happened after that, since T and her family were able to immigrate to America shortly after that incident. But yeah, so glad that Happy is in a safe and loving home now.

Interestingly, she groomed herself much like a cat. And she had many other feline characteristics. Not a breed to bound into the room and knock over a lamp. She was kind of difficult to train but to be honest she just knew how to live with a person, so I never found that all that much needed to be trained.

There are many stories of Jindos crossing miles to return to their owner after getting lost, rehomed, or waiting for years for their passed owner to return. This coat coloring is pretty rare for Jindos. They are most commonly orange or white, like Shibas. But unlike Shibas they aren’t very vocal and have a more athletic build. They are cat like with their hygiene and prefer to do their business far away from where they sleep. They’re great hunters and have a tendency to jump fences like huskies. So amazed that this came out on the same week I got my Jindo mix... also from Free Korean Dogs! They are a fantastic and trustworthy organisation and I'm so blessed to have found my Yeona through them. She has been pretty nervous with all the changes but in her safe space (my room), she is so sweetly affectionate, grooms herself like a cat, and is just happy to keep me company without demanding much in return. I love her already. ❤

Happy walks in: "Hi, I hear you have treats." So glad she and others were rescued. And groomed--thank you.

What an absolutely beautiful dog. Very regal in her stance and demeanor. And one incredible fur factory 😁

I bought the dryer and shampoos from her website. I have two Great Pyrenees whom I use to take to Pet Smart. Figured I'd wash them myself for now on. Thanks to the tips from Girl With a Dog. Dryer is exactly what I needed as I live in Montana and it gets super cold. Saving 200.00 every 6 weeks doing it myself. Of course my dogs are good at bath time. Not happy but tolerate it.

I am very happy to see 진도(Jindo) breed in this channel! They are awesome, very loyal, agile, and smart. Good for protecting properties, good with children when properly trained by owners. Their loyal nature make them very hard to be trained by others, though. They are not great with strangers. Happy is an indeed angel, to let you groom. Also, they are known as escape artists. You were prefectly equipped to prevent escaping. Otherwise, she would have jumped over the table and ran.
