- I bought a very broken 2000 BMW 528i Sport with 200,000 miles on it. Every one of those miles is showing now and turning it around is a big job. We're going to sort out all of the mechanical issues today, brakes, the water pump, thermostat housing, the list goes on and on!

When removing the waterpump try to screw two M6 bolts in the thread holes to get the WP out of the housing instead of hitting it with a mallet😉 Nice job done.
I LOVE how JR approaches projects like he's changing a lightbulb.
Nothing do it but to do it! 💯
making it look too easy is not entertaining. needs more transmission failures on the highway.
You should have a hood strut sponsor for as many of them as you have had to replace.
Came to say the exact same thing
lol i was thinking this too. he's the hood strut wizard
Marty from Mighty Car Mods used the Yaris Hilton wiper to hold up his hood: i.imgur.com/z0huU31.png
why replace them? its more exciting to see if they work or not, my hyundai i30 almost chops my head everytime i open the trunk :)
Cheaper cars are better in the hood section tho, usually a manual metal stick to hold it up :)
I was kinda missing the ol' repair and flip videos
They never left, just had to build a car 😁
Please clean the drain below the break booster. When it is clogged, your engine will suck in water through the brake booster
I'm glad your upload times correspond so well with my sleep schedule...
I like working all night 💯
Good idea saving this video to release them as a series. Rock on! 🍻
You're smart to have a backlog of vids to keep the show rolling. I'm always glad to see a new post from you!
That's cool seeing Tyler helping you with the BMW
Nice to see you saving this now rare 5-series. Much nicer and cooler than any of the new crap they sell.
FCP Euro is the best warranty and fast shipping. Been ordering a ton of parts for my BMW project.
agreed, i get all of my bimmer stuff from them
I really love these old to gold videos from you, this is such a satisfying project type
John Ross puts on a decal with one hand better than I can with two !
It’s driving Tyler crazy that JR is doing it the right way instead of the cheap way.😄
JR "have you watch my videos before?" Tyler................................long pause "the art of the poor" LOL he had to think about. Fun fact just for me, my 2 youngest are John & Tyler. Made me laugh.
I can tell you from rebuilding a e39 530i sport mechanics special that fcp euro does in fact box everything to fit in the bmw trunk, either that or BMW makes the trunk to fit fcp euro boxes
It's sorcery 🧙♂️
Or Tetris.
My wife gave our daughter her 1998 AC Schnitzer 540i before we migrated to Australia. It has 400,000 KMs on it and still growls like a beast. I did 90% of the maintenance myself. I've owned a two and a half tonne S500L W140 Bullet Proof Mercedes. Smooth ride. The Schnitzer wasn't far behind. Power wise, the Schnitzer is a rocket compared to the Merc. The Merc however could pull any hill in top gear. The Schnitzer would change down if not using Triptonic. Cool 😎 brother.
JR checklist for buying any second hand car : bad trunk struts , check . bad hood struts ,check. Keep up the great content 👍
Am I the only person who replaces those things? 😂
Yess!! I loved the rolls smoke project but I missed these videos! Ya love to see it
FCP Euro have Saab parts too? You need warehouse/pole barn for all your projects. Welcome Tyler!
Love to see the Saab in the background, it really makes me happy to see it standing there clean and all.
Love watching your videos. You're such a detailed person
Great video just checking your channel out for the first time. Really cool stuff bud
Nice! Putting the life back into the bimmer. Looking forward to the interior fixes
Cheers
Doc
I had the 02 525i, it was fun watching you doing the same stuff that I did, but without using Duralast/AutoZone, Craigslist, Ebay, RockAuto and Amazon non-BMW parts. Seriously, mine should've said Duralast on the rear instead of 525i. I did some crazy stuff, like repairing the plastic valve cover, using Permatex The Right Stuff instead of subjecting expensive gaskets to potentially warped surfaces. Also, replacing the bushings on thrust arms without removing them from the wheel carriers. Side of the road repairs, driving up on the curb instead of having a jack, etc. Fun stuff!
Congratulations on a great project. Addressing defects and correcting them is a huge value-add to any car. Restoring it to stock and removing Mickey Mouse air intake is the roghr thing to do. Fixing previous botched repairs is excellent. You give the car new life and the respect it deserves. Well done
Also kudos to FCPEuro for backing this effort!
Double check coolant bleed procedure. I had a couple of those e39 and e36’s back in the day and you have to lift up the front and place on jack stands while the cooling system cycles to help take out the air pockets.
DavGo I used vynl tubing on the bleeder screw so that I didn't make a mess when doing my e46 330. Just a tip..
Glad these videos are back, project rolls smoke dragged on and got tedious.
Upload times are perfect. As I’m browsing UA-cam before going to bed you always upload.

I just found this channel and totally love it.
Forgot to say, I was really looking forward to your reaction to getting it on the road after the work was done... Never found it. That's a sweet 5 series!
You make everything look so easy JR.
On the hoses you leave the retaining clip in its locked position and just slide the hose on till it clicks. Make sure you lube the o-ring and everything just slides together. Should have replaced the expansion take and the hoses to the aux water pump as well. Not to mention the belts and the fan its self. Every 100,000 miles you need to replace just about the entire cooling system including the radiator.
Expansion tank - major headache. A must replace item.
Just got a 1-owner, dealer-maintained 2000 528i M Sport! Near mint!
Dude, you would’ve loved to have seen my fathers e39 Dinan 540iT sport wagon, that thing had 275k miles on the og timing chain guides, and it went through transmissions like oil changes. The timing chain guides went and he was just driving the thing for at least 100 miles and then it dropped a valve and destroyed the motor, we had to sell it, but it provided entertainment for 275000 miles. Honestly, what a great car.
Well, actually it’s still for sale, $1k takes it
I should also mention the person that owned it before put $126k into the suspension in 2018. We have every service record from 1999 to 2019.
i changed the radiator in a friend bmw. what a learning curve.
I can'ft believe all them boxes fit. Impressive sized Trunk.
FCP Euro, Great for Volvos, BMW, VW, Mercedes, Porsche and wait for it....Audi parts...Order stuff up for the R8 and get that puppy on the road!
As a professional consumer of automotive youtube content... It seems like there is no middle ground when it comes to maintenance on BMW's. They are either dealer maintained and have lived a charmed life, or they have been run into the ground and need Everything!
This one is the latter, but you're not wrong. Perfect or beat, hard to find the middle 🍻
Can’t stop watching JRGO
this was one of my favorite episodes!
There is a trick to getting the water pump out, you use the longer fan clutch bolts on the 2 unused threaded holes on the water pump. The pump just eases out as you alternately turn the bolts in, its like using a puller remover tool. Hope that was distilled water that you used on the cooling system. Should have taken the brake caliper guide pins out and cleaned them up and inspected them.
Does every car you have need new trunk struts! 😂
Somehow yes, hood struts too 😂
My e38 750 trunk tried to decapitate me the other day. Must be A bmw thing lol
Well both of my BMWs I have bought had good struts on both hood and trunk.. must of got realllly lucky!
Hey JR, I've watched a lot of your videos. Would you mind doing one on how to get the most value for selling a used car? What kinds of repairs/upgrades to do or not to do? How to decide if something is worth fixing to get efficient value out of a resale?
The way you park all those cars outside your house has me wanting to say something smart out my mouth like "your neighbors must really love you"
They're likely thankful that it's not a huge party house and the cars aren't on blocks.
@@bryanstevens5901 hahahaha doubtful
I just started watching you channel
And I've enjoyed your videos and with the cheap cars you find I can't find any lol
Wow ... what ? All those parts would have cost a ton . What a great
Company doing that for yah . Great video . As always .
Love the channel and would really appreciate if you could do cost summaries at the end of each project. All those sponsors and I'm curious the value of all the items in those boxes.
About $1700 in parts went into this so far 😮
You guys are amazing!
Hey JR. I would suggest to get a BMW specific OBDII ($20-$50)cable and Rheingold ISTA+ software which you can get it for free online. Especially if you're going to be buying more BMW down the road. Only true way to completely flush and bleed the brakes on a BMW is using the software. THE DSC and ABS pump cannot be bled and flushed properly using the traditional method. Also it takes some 30min to flush and bleed all 4 sides using the software. A real life saver. Also, i would kill to find a deal like yours here in FL. Im a huge BMW fan and i owned multiple E39 along with the E38,E30,E36,E46,E90 and E92.
I have been waiting for more videos on this 528i. Besides the paint.... I want drive this car... for a few months and then move on and drive something else... I have always loved five series around this model year. No time and no spare money to do what JR does, so I'll just continue to watch and live vicariously through his videos. ;-)
Good to see a Tyler worthy of the title "car guy" on the channel.
FCP is great! I recently bought new rotors for my MINI & the shipping was weirdly fastI don't know how they can offer free shipping on items that heavy, but I'm not complaining lol
Keep up the good work!
Glad to see this & the Saab get some love.
This was the first engine I took apart myself. Love the m52s
thats M52...
hojnikb yeah m52b28 I mix up the 52 and 28
Good TLC so far - assume you'll be doing the other fluids, e.g. Engine oil, transmission and diff? As it has some wear and dubious service history, I'd suggest using an additive in each with friction reducers - not an instant result, but you'll notice it'll be quieter and smoother after a few hundred miles.
i love how the homie Tyler is just wrenching with no gloves.
Float_Bowl_Gasket _ what are gloves
That fan clutch is no joke. Took me a while to get it off of my 330i.
Good video. I usually buy parts and then just put them in the garage next to the car!
Another outstanding video
Thanks James! 🍻
@@WatchJRGo wish like all get out you could work on my W140... it's only a dream 🙃
Have fun doing the plastic coolant pipes under the intake they are a PITA
watchjrgo respect to u man for having the balls to do this ...these e39s look sooo good !
Man I don't use power tools to put those brake rotor retaining screws in. I also temporarily put 3 lug nuts in when I reinstall that nut so it's lined up nicely on the hub.
Next time take a couple of bolts from the water pump pump pulley and thread them into the two threaded holes in the water pump body to help ease it out. No need to use hammer or a screw driver!
"Hows that fluid look?"
"B R O W N"
"Like Grannies underwear" ... * sarcasm * Thanks for that mental image * / sarcasm *
Hey JR, for you and ALL of your Subs, if you ever want an INSTANT increase in your Gas Mileage. Power, Performance. Reliability, AND Longevity, DELETE the FAN CLUTCH and install Electric Cooling Fans ! ! ! ! I have known for Several decades that a Fan Clutch puts a load on the engine BUT, I had NO IDEA how much a Fan Clutch affected the On Board Computer until I did the Delete on my Toyota T100. Mileage JUMPED by 10 miles per gallon and I had to retrain my right foot pressure on the throttle to prevent burn-outs. So I did the same on my 1998 Chevy C1500 and got the same results ! ! ! !
16:02 JR, when you start on the interior repairs, will you please show how to repair/reattach that side plastic to the bottom drivers seat!?? I have a different vehicle but needs the same repair. All the factory clips, etc are broken or missing, etc. Thanks!! 👍👍
That’s the one thing I didn’t buy, they’re really expensive, might have to find a salvage car to pull them from 🍻
Zimmermann Sport brakes, I use the same in my Vauxhall Astra 😀😀
not sure if someone postet it before, but... The water pump has to more threads ( I think M6s) where you can bolt in two screws. When the pump is in the engine with the help of this screws xou can gently push out the pump by just thigtening the screws against the engine!
otherwise, like your videos! thumbs up
Ribbed serpentine belt routing is obvious. Smooth side of belt on smooth pulley, grooved to groove
I see a red tracker... things aren't in order I'm so lost! XD
Started following you a year ago with the R8 swap, still waiting for that chapter to finish!!!!!, like the regular videos, but would like some updates on this one....
WE NEED THAT R8 RUNNING! preferably b4 your kids get to college lol
Poor BMW it needs this amount of love for its long service. Also Audi R8 build show Miata and Gabe 🍻
Thought the shocks were shot did you replace
Was that sunlight I saw in the background? 🤣
What kind of drill/driver are you using? I would like to have one that could be used for drilling or also to remove nuts and bolts.
What was the red spray paint that you used for the pads?
I have a bmw 528i 2000 automatic 5 speed inline 6 and I am looking to engine swap within a year or so! I wanted to see if you think it’s possible I can put a N62 or M62 under the hood or what you might recommend as my v8 upgrade of choice ?
bro ive been loving the channel lately hopefully one day we can have a beer
I agree with your auto zone warranty
I had a 2000 BMW 528i as a first car with 298,000 miles on it. It was a nice car, but mechanically it was awful. Used it to drive to school which was 10 minutes away. If I drove it for more than 20 minuets it would overheat. Finally got rid of it after driving it for 3 months. Was only 500 bucks lmao. Wish it didn’t have so many problems because I actually liked it.
Love it, I'll trade you for my 06 Saturn ION in MN I mean it runs and not a RR, but you never know........ I have seen some of those trades. Otherwise i am sure Hoovie would :) Love the content.
That quiet LKQ Pick Your Part plug at the end.
Thanks for letting me live my car loving dream while keeping my wallet full!
Time crunch repairs are always fun. Wellllll
FCP rocks. I buy parts with them.
surprisingly, it is a mod to go back to halogens from HID. The HIDs have a bad habit of breaking the adjusters (even with just normal driving) and you end up with your lights pointed at the ground. It is kinda a b-- job of repairing the adjusters, specially on the later e39 since they changed out the glue on the lens cover. Also, don't have to deal with ballasts and stuff. Go look at the price of a new headlight assembly, good luck finding an unbroken used one. Those connectors maybe for the halo/angel eye bulb, would have to see up close.
You should have used the bolts for the water pump to “push” out the water pump. I had the same exact car in AZ. Bought my parts when Bav Auto was around.
That’s what we ended up doing, you can see it for a second or so 🍻
I see, jumped the gun, lol
Akebono pads the best! Also Are you selling or keeping this?
Had one 2001 died at 256k but the handling and steering was worth it. I hate the maintenance.
My friend has a BMW wrecked in the rear 95 model engine good and 5 speed
LKQ corp (not local) has a couple air boxes cheap.
I love high miles cars they deserve love and care.
Gosh I need a lot of that stuff for my BMW.
as an e39 owner im very mad you got a better deal than i did
C'mon JR...get things buttoned up and get up here to Chi-town for a LegitStreetCars crossover!!
That's on the list, we've been talking about it 🍻
A couple of years ago I was going to buy this really good deal on a 2001 530I with 118K miles that still looked like new, the LCD's in the dash all still worked, and the dealer had just gone through and done all the 100K service and made some upgrades, like replacing plastic coolant parts that tended to fail, with metal aftermarket parts. The only problem ..... the credit company ,Experian, said I was dead. By the time I got that straightened out the car was gone.
hi jr i am restoring an e34 in the philippines can you tell me which site is the best to buy parts on line please
I thought you're supposed to start bleeding with the right rear since it's the the greatest distance from the master cylinder when changing the brake fluid in order to throughly flush the system. At least that's what everyone says and it's what I have always done.
JR, my son wants an old car for as his 1st High School car. I'd like to get him one, but, I want to get an easy fixer that won't drain my pockets. Any suggestions?
