    Very informative video, thank you so much! Hopefully I'll get that drivers license soon so I can pick up my very own E39. Have literally no experience maintaining cars, so these kinds of detailed videos are a huge help!

      Yessir. I recently bought a 528 as my first car. It has a thrown rod however so we're gonna do a 530 swap and punthem 3 litre engine into it wish ya luck though

      @@e39lover73 Nice, hope it turns out well. I got my license and immediately bought a 2001 525i sedan some 10 months ago. Cost me about $3500. It has some issues yes, most notably the very worn out clutch which makes it hard to engage from standstill, and of course the standard E39 rust spots. I aim to fix all of this eventually. But overall it's a very nice car. I've driven it up to 160kmh/100mph on the freeway and it's really nice and stable, as opposed to the tin cans you would get for the same price tag. Next plan is to buy a house with a garage and get a E39 touring as well.

      Wow, great video, I unfortunately let my 1999 528i overheat I'm not sure but the motor sounds like it is knocking. Smoked really bad, it's a 5 speed, with 215 miles. In decent shape.. should I just part it? It's the very base model. Any suggestions? Or is it just a good parts car?

    • @kimkimpa5150

      @@davidsherrick898 Hello fellow bimmer owner :) Just an FYI, you replied to a comment thread rather than making your own comment, not sure if that's what you wanted. I can't give you any expert advice really, but since you have a 1999 528i you have a M52TU engine, so you've got some really nice low rpm torque there. I've heard that the M54 engine (which is in 525i, 530i, and the 2000-2003 520i models) is the most reliable straight six BMW engine to date, and I would expect your M52TU to be of similar quality. Everything else is gonna break eventually, but that engine will most likely last double your mileage if you make sure to top of your fluids and repair the surrounding parts as soon as they go bad. So if I were you, I would pay someone who's familiar with BMW E39s to diagnose it and see if it's worth reparing it. I mean if the engine is shot it's not gonna be worth it, but if it's "just" the cooling system (which usually breaks early on these models), then yeah, definitely repair and keep.

    There is a distinction with the power fluids that is worth noting. The V8's and M5 use a power steering gear box and require ATF. Your model the 528 should have a power steering pump and use the CHF fluid, most other models and and the 3 series use CHF if I'm not mistaken. Now to address the that cap, I just went through this dilemma with a friend this morning! He has an M5 bought a new reservoir and and the cap states 'CHF Only' - when the M5 should be using ATF fluid in the power steering system. To note the cap on his old reservoir states 'ATF Only'. After the vehicles came off the line the part numbers for the 'ATF only' caps and 'CHF Only' caps didn't differ, and almost all new caps say 'CHF' assumingly because that is more widely used. Bottom line is the caps are going to vary what they say, you need to go off the VIN or a repair manual.

      Thanks! This is something I will now check, the E39 528i I picked up cheap (no history) has abnormally heavy steering with no obvious explanation.
      I know the fkr who sold me my first E34 540i put ATF in the PS res (we negotiated a roadworthy service in the price and obviously dex3 is cheaper than CHF11S), luckily it was just a mix and I caught and flushed it out before it caused any issues

    Yeah nice work man. I'm going to buy one soon, but here in Germany they got very expensive. The 528i is my favorite one, fun and reliable engine. I haf a 535i as well, but personally I did not like it as much as the 528i I had. And this month I want one again, and probably not going to sell it again. I always regretted selling my first e39 (528i).
    All in all, it's a beautiful and fun car. Just timeless!

    Why it's not on Netflix ? Question I ask to all people changing oil in their E39s - did you replace those two small orings in the oil cap - those that DO NOT come with the Mann filter but have to be bought separately? :) 99% of nswers are " No, I didn't because it did not come in the Mann set" :) PS that 1% is me.. talking to a mirror

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 роки тому

      When you buy the oil change kit from FCP, they include the o-rings! I agree, definitely change them out during your oil change 👍

    • @tomek860
      @tomek860 2 роки тому

      @@TheBimmerBarn in Europe when you buy the oil filter (any brand actually) you get just the big oring, those two smaller ones have to be bought separately. Some online shops suggest it when buying oil filter, others do not. People new to E39 are mostly not aware something like this exists.g

    If you plan to sell off the car, why use FCPEuro then? Wouldn't it be cheaper to go RockAuto for some of the parts then since you won't be holding unto the car then?

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 роки тому +4

      I probably could save a couple dollars here and there, but I do appreciate FCP's business model and give them my business because I want to help support them! I do use alternative sources for parts if I'm trying to meet a budget goal.
