    Wow! Overall I like the binaural for the immersive experience, however, in my opinion, the rain is too crispy and almost sound like a frying pan. In that case, I prefer stereo :)

    I would like to see something like this but with 3 comparisons. This video + 3rd option: stereo recorded with one mic on far left and another far right of image. Binaural sounds better but for me that sounds like an illusion because the Sony mics are closer to eachother.

    Interesting how everyone else says the opposite: I find the Sony to handle dyncamics better (when the rain starts to fall harder, for example, towards the end of the video). It might be the non-pro headphones I'm using right now though. The overall quality of the Sony to me is very good, a great spatial image despite being stereo and not binaural.

    I tried listening this with a hi-fi stereo system, I don't have any headphones, sorry.
    Stereo sounds much more dynamics, sound fills the room, it's like real rain inside the room.
    Binaural sounds flat, it's like two speakers sound different from each other, sound of rain not fill the room, I can tell the position of the speakers easily.
    For a stereo system using ancient big speakers, stereo recording is still the best. Binaural only best with headphones, I think.

    • @JulienMatthey
      @JulienMatthey  3 роки тому +1

      Well. That’s the point. Binaural is a technology made to be listened to with headphones only. Speakers are not able to create the immersive feeling of the binaural that’s why it could sound flat. Share a new comment when you’ll have the opportunity to listen to the video with headphones. You’ll hear thunder coming from the rest of your head 😉

    i work more on the music side of audio and dont have much experience working with actual mics, but binaural audio has always fascinated me, but recently ive been having a bit of a personal dilemma. ive been using dobly DTS sound unbound on windows 10 for gaming with my beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 80 ohm headphones that are going through a decent DAW and getting properly amplified to take advantage of the huge frequency range these headphones are known for, and thankfully sound unbound has a billion specific headphone brand profiles and one of is that exact one.
    in 3d gaming, it provides 3d audio thats so freakishly precise it sounds better than any surround sound setup ive been able to game on, which was at one point a high end 7.1 setup, and in terms of spatial accuracy and position precision, this 20 dollar program made these now relatively cheap headphones were suddenly providing a hologram of audio around my brain lmao.
    but the reason im even bothering to bring this up and sorry im so long winded, is that i just now started listening to binaural recordings and i havnt found any steller ones that are great examples that are effective in testing audio spatial precision in my setup, and so far all the ones ive heard.... i cant decide if this actually helps or hurts the overall 3d affect of these types of recordings. i dont know if perhaps im choosing bad recordings to try and test this. thank you so much if you bothered to read this far, and id appreciate any input from anyone whos a professional with recording equipment and this technique.

Roland also sells the CS-10EM binaural mics for less than $100 on Amazon that sound rather good as well; the benefit with the Rolands is that you can monitor the audio while you record, acting as a earbuds/microphones combo, though they don't sound as good as the Sound Professionals in my opinion.

    Interesting comparison. I'd go with the Sony any day. You can still process it later to adjust the stereo field if needed, and the starting point would be so much nicer sounding. And that's even before considering how the Sony is really cheap compared to the 3Dio.

    • @JulienMatthey
      @JulienMatthey  4 роки тому +1

      Hakon Soreide i love both of them. They’re just not for the same use. Sony PCM-D100 is a great recorder but has its limits, especially with low sound effects and when it’s windy. I’ve just bought the Usi LOM stereo microphone and I’m amazed by its quality

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide 4 роки тому

      @@JulienMatthey Ah, so the D100 is very sensitive to wind, even with a good-quality dead cat like the Rycote? I guess the 3Dio ones will sound a bit like what you hear through your own ears when it's windy?
      Also, does the 3Dio actually pick up sounds that are too soft for the D100?
      Which Uši did you get? The Pro or Mikro? They look (and sound) quite interesting.
      I've got a Zoom H4n, which I've got reasonably good mileage out of, but every now and again I do look at other options, especially since I have been thinking of doing more recording of sounds and noises to use in ambient music and soundscapes. A one-in-all solution like D100 is rather appealing, but of course with the H4n, I do have the option of plugging in XLR mics needing phantom power.
      H4n drains batteries like crazy, though...

    • @JulienMatthey
      @JulienMatthey  4 роки тому +1

      @@hakonsoreide Yeah even with the Rycote deadcat it's way not enough. To be honest I stopped using it when there's too much wind and prefer to use another microphone in a blimp (with deadcat) connected to my Sound Devices 702T recorder.
      3Dio sounds very close to what you would hear through your own ears yes.
      Well... it depends of the recorder you have. If you have a recorder with bad preamps it will be worse than the D100, but if they're good (like in the latest 8 series from Sound Devices) it would be better.
      I use the Pro. :)
      D100 is better than the Zoom H4n for ambiances recordings. I used it all the time. But as I've just bought the Usi Pro, I'm going to use it certainly less than before. Maybe I should do a comparison between D100 and Usi Pro on the H4n (I have one as well)

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide 4 роки тому

      @Julien Matthey Thanks for another good answer. I’d certainly be interested in a D100 vs Uši Pro connected to H4n comparison. It will be a good indication for anyone whether a budget recorder with good reasonably-priced mics can outperform a pricier all-in-one solution like the D100.
      Both because I hope to see that video one day, but also on principle, I am subscribing to your channel now; I have decided that whenever I see any video I like from a channel with fewer than 1000 subscribers, I will always subscribe, like and comment. After the change in monetisation, anyone with fewer than 1000 subscribers will need a bit of help before getting their fair share of the money that UA-cam inevitably still makes from the combined millions of work hours that have gone into creating interesting, though often niche, content deserving of a wider viewership.

      Mike _72 you can record binaural sounds through a mic like the 3Dio Free Space Pro II (3diosound.com/products/free-space-pro-binaural-microphone) using a male jack 3,5mm to make jack 3,5mm cable connected to the jack stereo input connector of the D100. But you can’t connect a Sennheiser Ambeo mic because it needs 4 XLR connectors. D100 has no XLR connectors. Bonjour Julien.
    Je viens de me procurer un Sony PCM-D100. Est-ce normal que l'enregistreur souffle un peut. Je veux dire par là que j'entend le souffle de l'enregistreur si j'augmente le volume. Je dirais que l'on commence à entendre le noise de l'enregistreur à 4 sur le volume quand j'ai un casque branché sur le Sony. En augmentant on l'entend bien. Bon je pense que c'est normal mais une tendance maniaque m'arrive parfois haha.
    Merci pour la future réponse.

    • @JulienMatthey
      @JulienMatthey  5 років тому +1

      F K bonjour Fabien,
      Oui c’est normal. Quasiment tous les preamplis d’enregistreurs soufflent plus ou moins. Avec des niveaux assez élevés ou des ambiances sonores bien remplies (comme ici sur cette vidéo) cela ne se remarque pas mais sur des enregistrements où le niveau sonore est très faible cela est beaucoup plus évident. Après il y a aussi l’acoustique du lieu et le bruit ambiant qui jouent leur rôle. Si le niveau de la source est faible tu devras augmenter le niveau d’enregistrement (faisant de toute façon apparaître plus de souffle) et si le bruit ambiant derrière est assez élevé cela pourra se mélanger et augmenter la notion de souffle. Après il peut arriver sur certains enregistreur que le souffle soit aussi celui du préamplificateur du casque (souvent moins bon que celui des micros) mais qui ne sera pas forcément retranscrit sur l’enregistrement. Qu’essaies-tu d’enregistrer au fait? Quoiqu’il en soit dans certains cas il est possible de le réduire voire de l’ôter complètement en post-production par la suite.

      @@JulienMatthey Déjà merci ta réponse. Encore car il y a quelques temps je t'avais envoyé un mail et tu m'avais apporté conseil par apport au matériel, ça date un peut.
      Pour l'instant je l'utilise essentiellement pour enregistrer mon synthé en sortie direct et mon ampli de guitare quand je me laisse aller, cela me sert à réutiliser les sons pour des compos. Le souffle est pas trop gênant mais je pense utiliser un noise superposor si cela me gêne pendant certains passages ou j'ai baissé le volume du synthés je crois. Je suivrais tes conseils la prochaines fois car j'avais juste géré le volume de mon synthé mais pas par apport au souffle (le synthé est assez récent et ne souffle cazi pas) sans me préoccuper du Sony . Pour l'instant c'est surtout pour ça mais j'ai testé samedi d'enregistrer des sons de "shaker" et un peut ma voix en passant par ma carte son (Antelope audio) tout en comparant avec le SM57 sur les mêmes enregistrements. Pour le shaker et les voix j'ai préféré le SM57 mais j'ai remarqué que pour d'autres sons (comme le scratch pour enrouler mes câbles) cela sonnait plus pétillant et précis avec le Sony. Bref j'entendais un bon souffle sur l'enregistrement du Sony. Sur le SM57 beaucoup moins pour le même volume et je sais que c'est normal comme il y a pas de préamp sur le 57. Après cela j'ai testé d'enregistrer ma voix seulement en utilisant le Sony puis j'ai réécoutés l'enregistrement avec mon casque seul branché dessus. Et j'entendais clairement le souffle quand le volume était au dessus de 4.
      Je compte m'enregistrer avec des maracas dans la nature et si j'ai moins de souffle c'est cool.
      Je précise que mon casque est un Audiotechnica ATH-50x et je le branche directement sans préamp soit à l'enregistreur ou à la carte son.
      Je pense aussi que je dois apprendre à gérer le niveau de chaque matériel, instrument etc pour avoir le son recherché. Ou avoir moins de souffle.
