Thank you for this! I really love how the DPA 4560. It's the exact feeling for me that I want to feel inside headphones. The in built mics feel intense and the DA's just open up and feel like you are within the space. I had not heard of these mics before so thank you!
Such a big difference between the microphones. Not only because the DPAs are binaural, they have such a fine resolution and can hear things, that the Tascam microphones can't. I love the DPAs. I also love the announcements at the train stations in Japan. They remind me of the movie "Lost in translation" with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Thank you again for another great video (the rhythm of the video-editing is always soooo good). Viele Grüße - Til.
Great soundscapes, as always Libby and Marcel! To the comparison: This reminded me a lot of your comoarison to the MKE 440 you did a while ago: The DPAs outclass everything on detail and realism, but(!) sometimes that's the wrong thing to do. It mirrors my initial experience with the 4560: you cannot "zoom in" with these. If the soundscape around you is noisy, the dpa recording will echo that. If the soundscape around you is amazing, the 4560 will capture every beautiful nuance. With the tascam built ins, it's easier to "select" certain sounds as it's more mobile and less detailed. Actually, with the Tascam, you could record 4 channel and "zoom" in and out between the 4560 and the builtins! I think that's actually a great creative opportunity to match the video perspective. Your video is inspiring to me, as always. Thanks.
I'm pleasantly surprised at how good the Tascam sounds on its own. I expected the difference to be more obvious than it was. The ferris wheel car was a good example of the difference though. The DPAs are just more pleasant to listen to. I'm curious whether the DPAs in different recorders would sound different, i.e. Tascam vs F3 / F6? I see someone else has added a similar comment, so consider this a +1. Oh, and it was nice to see the two of you together! More of that please!
Interesting outcome ! The X8 is a all terrain solution, not super sharp but more neutral, DPA is sharper on highs, picks subtle details, but can be overwhelmed on the lows. DPA seems to be more fit for quieter situations (immersive sharpness), X8 for all situation (with a touch of EQ). Thanks for sharing !
Marcel... I put on my headphones, travel to your world... and listen to your videos...! I Lock out the world... and suddenly realise, Libby is giving half of the journey...! Great to see you using more of the X8. I am gonna head to the waterfront in Shanghai tomorrow and do some recording with the X8. Love it... and I have to say that along with Orbital, you inspired me to actually use my ears more in my life. Can't thank you enough for this. Just bought your whole collection.. Been meaning to do this for a while now just out of support for the great things you guys do, and then seeing the Black Friday deal sealed it. Should have done it before though. Btw, I have a high definition air raid siren of a test run in Shanghai, if you'd like it then hit me up, I'd happily share it with you. Happened literally a day after I got my DR-05X, and I was out on my balcony like a kid in a sweet shop. All the best mate.
Thank you so much for your support and we hope you can use some of the sounds. Around 50GB coming up soon from Japan. Keep the air raid sound for your own future library :). Sounds of Shanghai sounds awesome :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Awesome thanks. Your Soma Ether has already made its way into my songs and I'm just about to add some of your thunder to a new track I'm working on. A funny thing happened on Thursday actually... I am a teacher in Shanghai, and I set my students a descriptive video task whereby they needed to choose somewhere in the world, make a video with a descriptive backdrop showcasing their language abilities. One of the groups did Iceland, and the video footage they stole from UA-cam was your contact mic vs Lom Geofon from Iceland... which was kind of cool.
Japan is on my bucket list! Thanks for the great comparison video, the X8 sounds great, but whenever you switched to the DPA mics, it's next level! ---the soundscape just opened up wider and was more enveloping. It's amazing that those small mics pick up such clean low frequencies, I love their sound of the low rumble of the trains and the uncanny binaural capture of you walking amongst the hoards of people with the sounds of footsteps, suitcases, the DPA's are truly a wonder, I really want those bad now! they are amazing! What a great comparison video, the editing is so good and you two together know just what to capture to give us a "taste" of comparison with your serving of video--- fantastic work and a pleasure to watch.
Thank you so much Michael! Always a pleasure to read your response. You should really get them. Just trying to figure out what wind protection could work.
Great , just what I was looking for . Quite a difference when you listen . The Tascam has a nice middle ground , while the DPA lacks the middle position sounds but is quite interesting. I like the DPA for sounds that are closer to the head , while general ambiance is better on the Tascam stereo pair
Excellent stuff, as always. I think Tascam x8 recorded the depth and the atmosphere better. DPA is a little sharp to my taste and has a lot of high-pitched noises as if it is an amplified version of Tascam. That said, one could work on these sounds in the post and make them extraordinary.👀😋
Definitely a bit closer than I expected in some scenes. A few scenes it was not a huge difference but with the others it was very obvious, like when you walked down the station stairs and also in the Ferris Wheel. DPA's obviously sound better in the lows and especiallx the highs, but they should do at $1000 a set. I'd love some for stealthy walking on streets or crowded areas. Very interesting comparison though. Thanks Marcel.
Thank you for watching Simon! Maybe what we could do is a comparison with the DPA 4060 on the side of the bag and the DPA 4560 in ear. That could be interesting.
@@FreeToUseSounds Yes, maybe. I also wondered if you get any noticeable different results using the same mics with different recorders. Have you ever noticed that ? Do you think it would sound identical using the DPA's (or any of the same mics) with the X8, F3, and F6. Would they all sound more-or-less the same ? I always wondered that. Does one recorder produce better low, mid, or higher frequencies than the others ?
I was pleasantly surprised by the Tascam, I felt it sounded a lot more 'natural' although the DPAs have more detail, they seem to have a lot of detail of everything including a lot of atmospheric city noise and felt the frequencies a little crushed - perhaps they are better in the more discreet areas.
The Tascam seems to have a much warmer sound than the DPAs. The DPAs pick up so much that, to me, they can sound kind of sharp in louder, urban settings.
Hi Justin. Yeah that maybe because of the polar pattern but also have to make sure to even level the sounds. Back in the days when making these videos, I didn't pay to much attention to it. Now I do.
Hi, do you think it's possible to use the top 3.5mm jacks with the Roland CS-10EM binaural mics? I'm considering getting an X8 but still unsure if i'll need adaptors to record binaural
I listened in stereo. If in AB the hole in the center can be heard, in binaural the stereo image deviates to the extremes. The DPA seem to me much more detailed, the noises of the steps, of the wheels of the suitcases are fabulous (a doubt on the low tones). The Tascam microphones do not demerit. Depending on the shot, I had trouble positioning the elements of the scene. They are different tools. Merci.
big differences loved the dpa more spatial, can differentiate the distance and depth and the quality of the details of the soundscape but impressed with the tascam also, wonder what r the effects of the dpa on other recorders
DPA sounds wider more stereo image, and its sounds like already low cut the EQ,and put some denoise plugins on it, so it sounds cleaner ,but stil have a high pitch noise, maybe can do a little touch in post to low down it in taste, Tascam mic is better than what i think,it has so much more information and natural sound and vibe , i like both for different situation, thank for the video!!

What was your configuration of TASCAM microphones X/Y or A-B?
Is the DPA headset sensitive to wind?, have thought if they would work recording while skiing like alpine. Or will the wind just destroy it. Have heared somewhere that omni lavs like DPA 6060 isn’t that sensitive to wind but that are maybe BS?
