Kevin as a musician and not just a beatboxer is what helpts set ptx apart from other a capella groups. There was once a guy helps teach at a capella acadamy that tweeted "being a vocal percussionist is 5% rehearsing and 95% watching youtube while you wait for the others to learn their parts." Then Scott responded "unless your vocal percussionist is the best at reading music and helps everyone learn their parts." You dont play Carnegie Hall at 17 just from being an okay musician. Long before he joined ptx. All while he had plans to become a dr. Ptx and sing off had other plans for him.
I really hope Kevin (and the band when you listen to PTX) are paying attention to your reactions. Historically, they have enjoyed reactors reacting to their music, I think they would especially appreciate your commentary/analysis.
This was absolutely crazy. His mind works on a different level than everyone else. I also would have loved to have seen him and Eddie Van Halen play a duet. Eddie would have probably loved it.
Kevin and no the bandmates have said that he has pretty much perfect pitch (followed by a very pitch accurate Mitch). So glad you finally got to see this!
KO is one of my favourite musicians. He is incredibly talented. "Kevin's 5th" is a must watch if you're a fan of Kevin. I'd love to see you react to it. It's insanely good.
I absolutely adore Kevin. He is, without a doubt, very talented. I have heard him speak about his life and family concluding that he is as personable as he is talented. I look forward to your analysis of the PTX cover by Seal, Kiss From a Rose. Kevin shines here as well on his electric cello. Thank you for your interest in Kevin and PTX in general. We are fortunate to have your breakdown of the intricacies of their music. 😊
Kevin's KOvers are fresh and creatively re- arranged; I recommend his original "Renegade" , and his short videos on You tube. His energy is contagious.
For awhile, it may have been during Covid, Kevin regularly posted shorts to instagram of his layered pop meets classical arrangements. I would love for you to enjoy more Kevin.
The processes that have to be going through Kevin's mind as he's creating this type of overlapping soundscape just continually amazes me. I can't wrap my head around all of the different things he has to keep track of in order to accomplish something like this - I'll just go with the blanket statement, he's a musical genius!
In the recording of the "Evergreen" video, you see Kevin come up with the percussion and show the group what to do and get feedback from them. He is amazing. They all are. It was interesting to see them work together and come up with how the music will be. I think you would love this video, and I would love to get your take on how they put the music together.
Kevin is so incredibly talented. I am in awe. There is a mini rabbit hole. Kevin’ 5th--All of me--Prelude Fromm Bach Cello . ❤️. Would love you to react to any or all of his
I was totally blown away the first time I saw this video years ago! I’m so in awe of Kevin’s talent! His voice has a rich tone, which I love! He’s such a multitalented man! I’ve seen it many times!
I love watching them doing different and unique side projects. I don’t want them to get burned out and break up. I loved they participated in Masked Singer last year. Gave them a chance to use instruments for a change. The Evergreen documentary is a good behind the scenes look at their process. It was filmed by Kirsten’s husband a few years ago. Great reaction as always.
He's certainly a talented man, isn't he? Love you comments and break down of this ear candy. Each of the members have solo works/videos, so I'm hopeful you'll try them during your PTX journey. There's much to explore!
I have seen this video many times and have always been in awe of KO’s amazing talent . Seeing you confirm his musical genius with so much excellent and detailed insight is appreciated ❤❤❤❤❤

If you like this, you should really do Kevin’s 5th It is a little bit longer video, but it starts off with the introduction as to how they found it then they show the song he was playing there and then a new creation he came up with that features Matt and talk about some drum playing from Matt and Kevin destroying the cello
Purple polka dots, man, how do you do this? I know every note in every loop of this performance; it's engraved in my ears, brain, heart, and probably spleen as well. At least I thought so. Then along comes Sir Hairless and makes me hear things I would swear weren't there before. I would love to have the privilege of introducing you and Kevin to each other. Every genius musician deserves a genius appreciator. (I mean, 0.75 seconds of vibrato on "down"--no, wait--on the SECOND "down"???)
Kevin's channel features a variety of musical experiments /exercises, going back to his cello-boxing when he was still in college. It does not have the viral video by which Scott first found him online -- his cello boxing version of Mark Summer's "Julie-O" -- but you can find it online. The other offerings include cello and cello-boxing covers of pop and classical pieces, some with vocals, and/ or looping, both solo and with other musicians. Also a series of auto-biographical videos. In 2015 he released his Renegade EP; the title track is an original and worth checking out.
I just had so much fun watching you react to this performance and all its skill and innovation. There simply is no one like KO and you see it so easily.
👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️ Obviously I had a busy May (and Sommer) and missed this one too, but thank you! So fun to watch you with Kevin, two crazy good musicians! 😉❤️ With great charisma! ❤️
Thanks so much for doing this one - I was really hoping you would do it as I knew as a musician you would really appreciate Kevin's insane musical talent! What can you say about his beatboxing and cello playing on this one...just unbelievable, but what I really love is his singing. His voice is so beautiful and, as you mentioned the fact he has perfect pitch and is so intensely musical does lead him to make really clever and satisfying musical choices. When he goes up the octave into his gorgeous falsetto - especially when he goes up the scale rather than down on the 'down diddy down diddy down' at 2:30 (I was surprised you didn't pick up on that - i.e. going up when singing down in Down!) it's just gorgeous. I always learn something from your reactions and analysis and something that really struck me with what you said today was that vibrato can cover slight inconsistencies in pitch and if you sing with a straight tone instead there is nowhere to hide so you have to be pitch perfect. As a choir and occasional solo singer, I did instinctively know that but I'd never really thought about it before. When you first learn how to sing and listen to singers, it's often all about the vibrato - everyone thinks you have to have it to be a great singer but I'd never really thought about how it can also cover up some musical 'sins'! I was thinking that perhaps that's why bass singers have to have really excellent pitch, because they often don't have, or use, much vibrato? Anyway, thanks so much as always for imparting your musical knowledge in an entertaining way. I look forward as always to the next one!🤩☺
There's no simple answer to that one! It all depends on various things, such as who the singer is, what the song is, what the musical context is (even things like who the audience is!) There's only so much vibrato can cover up; but it can certainly cover up tuning issues up to the quarter tone, which would be noticeable with flat-tone singing It's interesting what you say about bass singers, because from some that I've known, they tend to use the most vibrato But again, completely depends on the context! Are they singing an operatic aria or providing the bass in a jazz close-harmony arrangement? One would require heavy vibrato and the other next to no vibrato 🎶 Also in terms of excellent pitch - I believe it doesn't matter which voice part you sing, you'll always need excellent pitch for a great performance. Buuut if we really wanted to pick a part to have the best tuning - when it comes to standard choir/choral arrangements (thinking in terms of SATB voice parts) .... and again depending on the context 😅 ... from experience, I've found the inner parts are the parts that usually require the best tuning because of the roles their parts bring; the bringers of dissonance or the harmonic 'fillings'. The bass part and the soprano parts will be the most easy to hear parts because they're the highest and lowest, so whilst their tuning issues might be more obvious, they're more forgiving due to their role These are just my thoughts and certainly not gospel ^
You're right of course that operatic basses sing with a lot of vibrato, I was thinking more of basses in choirs and a cappella groups where they are holding down the bass line - they tend to sing with very little vibrato. That's something that Matt from Pentatonix has - a really lovely vibrato when he uses it. You'll get to hear that soon hopefully! You are right about singing on pitch - there is nothing like being in a choir to improve your pitching! I sing soprano in one SATB choir and I sing 2nd soprano in an SSA choir. The 2nd soprano role is definitely much more challenging!
Very happy that you did this one, I've been hoping and waiting 😊 The first time I saw this I was in awe of Kevins talent. I still am. Please do Kevins Fifth sometime. It's a live performance and I think you will love how he rearranged Beethoven's Fifth ❤
Loved this detailed analysis. Your smile kept it light. Please react to Kevin and Matt's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined during PTX's concert. Brought down the house with rousing, lengthy ovation!
I’ve always been a bit of a string snob when it comes to wooden instruments versus electronic until several years back when I played regularly with a group with cello, electric guitars and keyboard (with vocals) where we opted to pickup my cello to maintain the balance a bit better. Still prefer the fullness of a wooden instrument amplifying naturally but this is very cool and Kevin is incredibly talented! His beatboxing is out of this world- so versatile! Something I would never have found this without your reaction. Cheers from Canada!
It was quite obvious that you were really enjoying The video. I seem to recall hearing that Kevin has perfect pitch. I'm so glad you showed him playing the saxophone because I have looked and looked and was never able to find a video clip. If you want to hear the full story of Kevin's genesis with Pentatonix and his growth As a cello boxer while with pentatonics React to Kevin's 5th. It is about15 minutes long but is well worth it. He gets an awful lot into 15 minutes
As time goes on and you do more ptx reactions, you will find people telling you if it's a Kevin arrangement. Yes, Kevin is a freaking musical unicorn alien who eats a drum kit for breakfast.
i looooove this one, so impressive. and the video makes me so happy, Kevin is just playing since you are doing solo stuff, i would love to see your reaction to scott hoying's cover of i should tell ya momma on you
I'm trying to remember... I think in an interview soon after this came out KO said that he tried for most of a year to get the electric cello to sound like a guitar for this performance. I'm not a musician, but to my ear it sounds like someone shredding an electric guitar solo.
Kevin like Adam Rupp from Home Free both have beautiful voices but both are more comfortable beatboxing then singing. Scott convinced Kevin he had a great voice and taught him how to use it
Great to see you unpacking KO's work. He's very impressive isn't he! Really love the timbre of his voice, like a velvet caress! Masterful Cellist too. Classically trained. Yes, in patches he was making it sound like an electric guitar! Probably could play any stringed instrument he put his mind and fingers to. Gather he started out studying medicine and then concentrated on developing his career in music. Also speaks a number of languages fluently. VERY bright guy. Heard he may have become a bit frustrated being pigeon-holed as the Beat-Boxer in PTX and wanted to sing more. Nice to see him branching out solo and with such diversity. Maybe he does also play Sax!? I don't feel he was improvising. Yes, playing around for setting up the original composition, but, as you say; meticulous with every note - and breath between. In an odd way he reminds me of Lara Fabian, in that even though her classical training enables her to mask her breathing, she uses audible breaths very intentionaly as part of her story-telling. Kevin uses his breaths of course to punctuate and counterpoint the beats. 😊
Thanks for pulling this one apart. As the layers add up, we know what happens to my 👂🏻 I love watching KO play the electric cello. I was literally saying in my head, "that glissando...." and then you made the glissando comment, to which I responded in my head, "I freaking love this guy." (Not to be weird ) So cool you are doing PTX solo work, too. My fave PTXer is Scott and I thought his Live Choir version of Mars covered his entire range, but I was wrong! I think this linked song does; but since there is instrumentation, I have trouble separating.... I do think, however, Scott's full range is demonstrated in this piece. If you ever venture into his solo work, and remember, can you peg the range for me? I'm sure he hits G2, but I swear I hear B2, but it may be instrumental; the bottom usually drops out at that low of a pitch for me. He soars to the heavens as well. ua-cam.com/video/GK0LyhXCboc/v-deo.htmlsi=4gT-SE-HxSHCRsVz Stay well!
I’m on the fence about this artist & this performance. He’s obviously extremely skilled; the song is so-so; and the execution is extremely unique & interesting. I’ve listened to KO’s performance (thank you for the link) without analytical interruptions, and I’ve found that I’m extremely impressed by it. While I dislike the original song, his artistry overcomes the song’s shortcomings, transforming it into something quite extraordinary.
I'm of a similar mindset! With covers it's just luck really if the listener likes the original song or not - but that doesn't take away from Kevin's brilliance at all 🎵
Thank you for this reaction. This is amazing, but I'm with you on the music itself -- and there are so many others that I think are much better. I can't wait for you to react to "Kevin's 5th." This live version also gives some of his background: ua-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/v-deo.html, and it includes his wonderful interpretation of the Prelude from Bach Cello Suite No.1 (although his music video of it is even better). I'd love to see you react to more of his work. Here are some favorite KOvers: Adele (Someone Like You / Hello / Set Fire to the Rain / Rolling in the Deep); Stay with Me; True Colors (this is completely a capella); Don't Let me Be Misunderstood; Human Nature; Dream It's Over; As Long as You Love Me; Heart Attack. And then there is his original, Renegade. I think you'll love this one. These will give you a sense of the breadth of his talent. Looking forward to this rabbit hole! Oh, and this Christmas, his Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined is a must!
Sir hairless. Now you need to look at his live solo performance with Beyonce [his cello]. Ill recommend his Hollywood Bowl performance 2022 or last years Christmas performance from their concert. Prepare to be 🤯.

Hey SH! I was wondering if I should add the following to your potential Merch list: Vibrato You Know Voice Wobbles 🤔 I added it, you can always reject it. Why am I awake, wellllll, my brain 🧠 has the zoomies. You know like when animals get hyper and run around, stop and start, looking a bit crazy? Well that is my brain 🧠 right now. The Zoomies! Right. Okay then, good talk. 😂 T ✌🏻
Happy to see you taking a longer look at Kevin. What do you think when he audibly inhales into the mike at various points in the first singing section? Not to take anything away from the genius of the composition, but I found the noise distracting when I first heard it. I know Kevin's pumping out a lot of sound and the man does need to breathe, but would you call that repeated intake of air a disruptive sound, or is it appropriate musically and I'm being unduly critical? Love your detailed analysis, and can't imagine anyone skipping over it... it's absolutely the meat and potatoes of your reactions. 💖
I think it comes down to preference really! There are so many different sounds produced by his beatboxing that it's quite likely that not all of them will be pleasant to everyone - but they're done with such rhythmic precision that I think they certainly have their rightful place in the song's overall structure 🎶 Also, I'd imagine they're necessary - either as part of regular or circular breathing, so Kevin doesn't run out breath 😅Beatboxing is extremely complex and not something I've ever been too familiar with Thanks
@@SirHairless The section I'm referring to is before Kevin begins to beatbox, when he's only singing into the mike. The time stamp is 2:56 to 3:39, and at one point in there you say how much you like his voice. I agree, I find Kevin's voice smooth and relaxing through that verse, so those harsh inhalations break the mood for me.
@@kayecastleman6353 Oh I see! Yes I completely see where you're coming from I think I subconsciously don't pay too much attention to them...but now you've mentioned it... 😅
@@SirHairless Yeah... and now that you've heard it, you won't be able to unhear it! Just me, focusing on a minor flaw in a creative masterpiece. Thanks for the reminder to stay with the heart of the art. 💖
I love Kevin and I loved your reaction, I am not really a fan of this work of his, I think it's good to see his talent but I tend to ask myself why people is kinda obsessed with it, it's not something I would go back to after listening to it once. Anyways something nice if you want to check on their behind the scenes, they do have a short documentary (I believe it's less than 30 minutes), It's the Recording of Evergreen, just in case you are interested, you know what to do, it's fascinating.
I'm not a huge fan of the song either, so if people are like-minded then it's probably more about his musical prowess to be able to create such a work 🎶 I'm scared about any musical spoilers in Recording of Evergreen
@@guadalupejazminvilaguillen4786 Yes exactly! I've been recommended it a lot, but I've also been told there are many songs in there I've not yet done and there are snippets of these songs that might act as spoilers It's been on my list for a long time now! I'm half thinking I should only watch once I've listened/reacted to all the songs from the album (or so I'm told), but that could take a very long time

It all depends on various things, such as who the singer is, what the song is, what the musical context is (even things like who the audience is!)
There's only so much vibrato can cover up; but it can certainly cover up tuning issues up to the quarter tone, which would be noticeable with flat-tone singing
It's interesting what you say about bass singers, because from some that I've known, they tend to use the most vibrato But again, completely depends on the context! Are they singing an operatic aria or providing the bass in a jazz close-harmony arrangement? One would require heavy vibrato and the other next to no vibrato 🎶
Also in terms of excellent pitch - I believe it doesn't matter which voice part you sing, you'll always need excellent pitch for a great performance. The bass part and the soprano parts will be the most easy to hear parts because they're the highest and lowest, so whilst their tuning issues might be more obvious, they're more forgiving due to their role
These are just my thoughts and certainly not gospel ^
You're right of course that operatic basses sing with a lot of vibrato, I was thinking more of basses in choirs and a cappella groups where they are holding down the bass line - they tend to sing with very little vibrato. That's something that Matt from Pentatonix has - a really lovely vibrato when he uses it. You'll get to hear that soon hopefully!
You are right about singing on pitch - there is nothing like being in a choir to improve your pitching! I sing soprano in one SATB choir and I sing 2nd soprano in an SSA choir. The 2nd soprano role is definitely much more challenging!
Very happy that you did this one, I've been hoping and waiting 😊
The first time I saw this I was in awe of Kevins talent.
He's amazing!
He has an EP on his channel and the music is beautiful, Renegade is my favorite on the EP.
Love love love this! Please please do the kevin show/kevins 5th,the full one 😁😁❤
You make me laugh!! Thanks!!!!
Yay 🎉 so excited for this!!! 😊❤
There is some amazing modern barbershop singing happening out there (as you talked about harmonics). You should do a reaction.
Love him.
More Kevin, cello, and beatboxing? Renegade by Kevin. Awesome.
Thanks for this reaction. Kevin is an extraordinary musician.
That’s better than original 😊
👽🥁
Thanks, as always.
i looooove this one, so impressive. and the video makes me so happy, Kevin is just playing
since you are doing solo stuff, i would love to see your reaction to scott hoying's cover of i should tell ya momma on you
I'm trying to remember... I think in an interview soon after this came out KO said that he tried for most of a year to get the electric cello to sound like a guitar for this performance. I'm not a musician, but to my ear it sounds like someone shredding an electric guitar solo.
Love kevin
Oh goody!
Kevin like Adam Rupp from Home Free both have beautiful voices but both are more comfortable beatboxing then singing. Scott convinced Kevin he had a great voice and taught him how to use it
Fascinating! Thanks for this.
You should watch "Kevin's 5th" remix - it is mindblowing!!
3:18 I like your voice 😜☺️🫶
ahahahaha (rubs hands in anticipatory glee)
Please check out the Kevin Show/Kevin's 5th. Thanks for the great reaction!
He soars to the heavens as well. ua-cam.com/video/GK0LyhXCboc/v-deo.htmlsi=4gT-SE-HxSHCRsVz
Stay well!
or his solo version of All Of Me, he was so young but man, the control, emotion, phrasing, it's one of my faves
With covers it's just luck really if the listener likes the original song or not - but that doesn't take away from Kevin's brilliance at all 🎵
I don’t remember if you’ve done Kevin and Matt’s ReImagined Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts. 💜
Nice that you had a chance to get to Kevin.
Here are the 3 appearances that most people use as a Kevin introduction besides this one

Thanks for these!
You should see what he did with Beethoven Fifth
Please react to Yebba, 'My Mind'!
Hey SH! I was wondering if I should add the following to your potential Merch list:
Vibrato
You Know
Voice Wobbles
🤔
I added it, you can always reject it.
Why am I awake, wellllll, my brain 🧠 has the zoomies. You know like when animals get hyper and run around, stop and start, looking a bit crazy? Well that is my brain 🧠 right now. The Zoomies!
Right. Okay then, good talk. 😂
T ✌🏻
There are so many different sounds produced by his beatboxing that it's quite likely that not all of them will be pleasant to everyone - but they're done with such rhythmic precision that I think they certainly have their rightful place in the song's overall structure 🎶 Also, I'd imagine they're necessary - either as part of regular or circular breathing, so Kevin doesn't run out breath 😅Beatboxing is extremely complex and not something I've ever been too familiar with
Thanks
@@SirHairless The section I'm referring to is before Kevin begins to beatbox, when he's only singing into the mike. The time stamp is 2:56 to 3:39, and at one point in there you say how much you like his voice. I agree, I find Kevin's voice smooth and relaxing through that verse, so those harsh inhalations break the mood for me.
@@kayecastleman6353 Oh I see! Yes I completely see where you're coming from
I think I subconsciously don't pay too much attention to them...but now you've mentioned it... 😅
@@SirHairless Yeah... and now that you've heard it, you won't be able to unhear it! Just me, focusing on a minor flaw in a creative masterpiece. Thanks for the reminder to stay with the heart of the art. 💖
certainement formidable mais..... compliqué pour moi mais heureusement ce n est que moi
I'm not a huge fan of the song either, so if people are like-minded then it's probably more about his musical prowess to be able to create such a work 🎶
I'm scared about any musical spoilers in Recording of Evergreen
@@SirHairless You mean as in hearing stuff from songs you haven't heard yet?
Do you have it on your Pentatonix list as something you would consider?
@@guadalupejazminvilaguillen4786 Yes exactly! I've been recommended it a lot, but I've also been told there are many songs in there I've not yet done and there are snippets of these songs that might act as spoilers
It's been on my list for a long time now! I'm half thinking I should only watch once I've listened/reacted to all the songs from the album (or so I'm told), but that could take a very long time
