Calling All Artists!

  • How many times have you been told...
    - that your art isn't "necessary",
    - that it's just a hobby and you should treat it like one,
    - that you're "a little bit off",
    - that you should be more "normal",
    - that you should consider getting a real job?
I don't know about you, but I've grown tired of hearing stuff like that.
If you're an artist, you're the way you are because you were BORN that way.
    "Artist" isn't a job.
It's not something you learn in a school.
    It's not something you become.
    It's not what you do.
It's a singular way of being in the world.
    It's WHO YOU ARE.
Artist, you have a beautiful gift and the world needs you, now more than ever!
This is your call to arms.

A great video, Jim and Bekah. Of course I wouldn't have expected any less. You don't do things in half measures.

Jim, I just rewatched this video.. What a great message to artist on how to connect with their art and connect with a world that needs art. I just love what you have done with this video and it helps me to stay connected. Thanks again. Dan Mills, one of your Scotland students.

This is a powerful message and call to action. I first saw it when Blake shared it. I have since shared it too.

I found your email and this video so inspiring. After learning the "rules" I was transferred into breaking them to produce the art that I wanted to explore. As my statement says on my website " I want you to feel what I see" I find I can't stop creating and making things with still images and now experimenting with video, there is something there I have to do but feel there is still an opaque curtain I can't to quite reach, but it's there and I keep going for it. Thanks for this great inspiration, Jim. If nothing else it validates what I'm doing and inspirers me to do more. Thank you.

I think that I see something even more specific in what you are doing, and saying. I see it in your shots. I understand that you have a vision of what the finished product will look like but you have a specific way of selecting, interpreting, and making a scene. Your vision is even more highly focused and selective than you know! (Perhaps you do know, but your viewers may not)
Most every shot you shoot has high-contrast, specular, light. This is especially true in architecture and horses. There are very bright spots, high-key areas, very dark areas. This specific way of seeing, and what you want to have as a finished product, to some extent, explains why you tend to avoid color, or strong color. You even avoid intense color in your landscapes.
You also seem to emphasize pattern and texture. It’s in the building and on the horses.
Great videos, and, I agree that everyone needs to see a finished product as they shoot. Everyone also needs to know what they tend to do and why. What excites them. What do they see and, how to make that particular specific vision happen.

Jim, your musings, as ever, are inspiring, thought provoking and keep me searching for that special window of clarity and meaning that I found at Talisker Bay. Keep up your fantastic work.

In one of Blake Rudis’ courses he asks the question “What is your biggest issue or negative thought toward attaining or accessing your artistic vision?” My answer: Age. 67 years have expired, you can freeze a moment in time with a photo, but you can’t exist inside with it.
