    The edge retention of Maxamet is crazy...I love my Manix 2. What shocked me the most though, is that it is quite durable despite the insane hardness, and even more so by how easy it is to sharpen...I have a more difficult time sharpening my S90V and S110V knives.

    Wow, that's some crazy edge retention, LITERALLY, more than double the nearest super steel. Glad to hear the ergonomics worked, could only imagine if there was a hot spot on the grip.
    Also, if the knife is still that sharp after all that rope cutting, I think you would only need to sharpen it once a year if used as an EDC, depending on personal use.

    Just got a Spyderco Para3 with Maxamet . This knife came SHARP! It pushes thru paper like a single edge razor blade and pops hairs off my arm better than any of my other knifes. I’m a fan . (Haven’t sharpened it yet, obviously, but I am excited to do so when the time comes) I have a feeling I won’t need to carry a pocket sharpening tool with me to work everyday anymore.

    Amazing stuff!!!! 600 diamond is rough as hell imo, but sometimes less is more... I should really experiment rougher edges with my M4 contego. But that polished face shaving edge. It's just so hard to say no to it. Maxamet seems just plain crazy, I wonder at what point blade steel evolution gets to a point where you get a blade from factory that's so hard and tough that you can't really sharpen it, but it will not get dull, within reasonable limits of course 🤔.

    Hey, Pete, you know what I would really like to see? A proper discussion about the benefits of low end steels.
    And when I say low end, I mean nothing higher than 440C. Just a thorough look and comparison between 8Cr13MoV, 420HC and 4116. I'm particularly interested in how some companies tend to get the best out of these cheap steels. Buck's famous for their 420HC heat treat, but it kind of seems like Cold Steel is doing the same thing with 4116. That steel fascinates me, because on paper it should do even worse than 8Cr13MoV, and yet you got unexpectedly high results in your cut test. Is everyone else having the same experience?

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828 6 років тому +2

      marrenmiller at 6% vanadium with all those carbide in there. I’d bet my left nut it would do less.

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828 6 років тому

      malapropism27 generally high carbide steels cut less with polished edges. M4 good example of that. S110v would be another one I’d make that bet about.

    • @marrenmiller
      @marrenmiller 6 років тому

      Vinny Nero S35VN at 4% performs better with a polished edge, and this steel may perform more akin to ZDP-189 than 10V with it's extreme hardness. There's ample reason to think either way with this one

  • @bruceleo2607
    @bruceleo2607 6 років тому

    In theory, I love a blade that holds an edge forever, but in practice I love sharpening my knives more. I like a steel that is a good balance between edge retention and sharpenability. VG10 is just on the other side of too soft. I haven't had experience with 154CM, but if it lies between VG10 and S30V, I think that would be the start. My S110 LW Manix nearly never needs touched and it saddens me. That and the pinned construction. Just got the CPM154/S90V Manix sprint so we'll see how that fares.

    • @Nudel-nc1cp

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  6 років тому +7

      yeah, I dunno what was going on there. I am a way inferior sharpener using inferior equipment, and this edge is totally great. Took a while, but its great and the rope is tough on an edge, plus the chopping board beneath it would be a little hard on the edge too. All I can suggest is he was polishing it too heavily with the wrong kinds of stones for the steel or his was too brittle from a curly heat treat. I did coarse/medium/fine diamond then a strop with starkie sharp blue compound. Nothing fancy at all, just repetition.

    • @beyproctor7673
      @beyproctor7673 3 роки тому

      This result is amazing! It inspired me to buy a Para3 with Maxamet blade. I find it easy to sharpen with DMT diafold medium and fine. I can already shave with it after five minutes. The difference is that I have followed the factory bevel rather than reprofiling like you did. I’m not sure I ever will either because after a brief stropping the blade is sharper than any other I have.
      I recently saw Big Brown Bear’s hair popping video with what I think is a K390 Spyderco blade! Insane sharpness! I don’t need that edge daily but it is cool to see where fellow knife nerds take the hobby. I like your recent angle of user knife logic. It is closer to my needs and interests because I use my knives. I like the meditation of sharpening them but my real enjoyment comes from using them for actual tasks.

    • @CedricAda

    • @andyrichardson6188
      @andyrichardson6188 6 років тому

      The tool isn't the biggest factor - you need the right stones. Any tool that can hold the angle of the stone consistent relative to the blade will work. Some are are more stable, or easier to use than others. The Edge Pro stock stones won't do much work with Maxamet or ZDP-180. With diamond and Shapton glass stones it's quite good on the hard steels.

    So Maximet got 300 more cuts with a toothy edge over polished? Do you think that harder steels to better with toothier edges? Are softer steels better to have polished edges? These are the big questions. The world must know!

    • @Nudel-nc1cp
      @Nudel-nc1cp 5 років тому

      It is mostly chemical composition of metal that promotes toothy edge over polished one and vice versa. Low chromium, high vanadium tool steels like CPM-M4 or Maxamet perform better with toothy edges. Steels like Elmax or M390 have both high chromium and vanadium content and perform well with both edges. Steels like cpm154, zdp189, cts-xhp gonna be better with polished edges :)
