  • This talk will describe the extraordinary untold development of Kāinga Ora, NZ's largest Crown Entity and the growing economic, social, and cultural impacts of the grave, political decision taken to disestablish it. Philippa Howden-Chapman, who was a director on the Board of Kāinga Ora - homes and communities, until she resigned this year, will be joined by Bernard Hickey, who runs The Kākā and writes and speaks independently about economics, business, investing and politics.
    Philippa Howden-Chapman, CNZM, QSO, FRSNZ is a Distinguished Professor of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington. She is Co-Director of He Kāinga Oranga/ Housing and Health Research Programme and Director of the NZ Centre for Sustainable Cities and has conducted randomised community housing trials in partnership with local communities, which have had a major influence on housing, health, and energy policy. She has a strong interest in reducing inequalities in the determinants of health and has published widely in this area. In 2014, Philippa and her research team were awarded the Prime Minister’s Science Prize and she was the first woman and social scientist to win the prize. In 2021, she was awarded the Royal Society of NZ Rutherford Medal. She has been Chair of the International Council of Science Union, Scientific Committee for Health and Wellbeing in the Changing Urban Environment: A systems analysis approach and the WHO Housing and Health Guidelines Development Group, a member of the Children’s Commissioner’s Expert Advisory Group on Solutions to Child Poverty and a director on the Board of Kāinga Ora-Homes and Communities. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
