  • This 2015 Ford Fusion sustained some heavy unibody damage in a rear end collision and requires some frame and body panel straightening. The video demonstrates how to set up a Champ, 10 ton frame straightener using rocker panel clamps to anchor the car so that the necessary pulls can be made. You know, years ago A friend of mine had a body shop here in my small town. He would go to Dallas to the rebuilder auction and buy a couple of cars to rebuild! There was an older fellow that everybody called "Fred the Frame Man" that lived about 60 miles away and would go from body shop to body shop all over this part of the country when needed to do some frame work. Fred's father did this before him and he took over for him many years ago. He had this portable pulling bar that was on four little wheels. It would extend out further under the vehicle if it was needed. He was a wizard at this. I marveled watching him work. It didn't matter if it was a 1 ton truck with a badly bent frame or a unibody Firebird. He would do a few measurements and start in with his air over hydraulic pump hooked to the tower and a little bit later it was all pulled back straight. They had a 1 ton truck in there that was loaded heavy and hit a drainage ditch! It's frame was sway backed, twisted and shoved back on one side. About an hour later it was straight as it could be. Well you take care Jerry. Tom

      Love to hear stories like that - awesome. Nothing better than stories of folks that did some pretty amazing and talented stuff, carrying two bundles of shingles up a ladder at one time, fastest roofing nailer in Texas - pop, pop, pop, pop, miner stories, etc. Thanks for the story Okie-Tom

    That setup may be okay for light pulling but a 2 clamping system used with an old L style puller has been obsolete for over 30 years. Cars are so lightly built today they need some type of 4 clamp system on the rocker pinch welds to avoid damaging them. Good luck, you may need it.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 роки тому

      You're right - all high volume shops use 4 clamps systems either drive on or pull pots in the floor for sure.... this is really all I could fit in an 18x21 garage with a bunch of stuff I need to throw out :)

    My frame man uses the old original version of this on frame work of my 40's to 70's classic cars. He says you should NOT pull or push off of the connecting center bar (the bar that goes from pinch weld clamp to pinch weld clamp) because the transfer of load can bend the center of this pipe and suck your rockers in. He claims it happened that way to a fellow worker some years ago. He says that you should attach a chain to each connecter pipe near the pinch weld clamp. This will form a chain style V that attaches to the frame machine lower section. So the stress is on the two v chains instead of the center of the connector pipe which pulls in on the rockers. What do think of his concern? BTW, I just noticed that the instruction manual for this Frame machine, shows using chains in a V fashion as he said.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 роки тому +1

      Yes that's probably true for the old kind - I actually used to use that set up (the bar was bent too!). The pipe was round and much weaker than the rectangle bar this set up has. The bar won't bend so you don't have to worry about it. I think they addressed that when engineering this puller but stole the instructions from an somewhere else 'cause you can tell they're old. I don't know why they didn't write their own. You can use the chains too but I like to push against the bar as it puts even, parallel pressure on the rockers. That's an individual decision though - as long as it works for you :)

    • @oliviersegers8249
      @oliviersegers8249 5 місяців тому

      The dozer is pushed against the bar or with a chain as you say and also to avoid damage, long weld seam clamps are used. The original dozer from Blackhawk was called a damage dozer and for that device you can buy options for thousands of dollars. I have various aiming systems. With a damage dozer with a lot of options you can make the heaviest accident cars, today this is forgotten by many who do not know this

    • @oliviersegers8249
      @oliviersegers8249 5 місяців тому

      I have a lot of original Blackhawk books in which the instructions for use are illustrated. Centerline gauges were also used. I love the system and I can tell you that I have a straightening bench with an electronic measuring system, as well as a dozer, you can make everything with it provided you have knowledge

      @@chriskiefer8365 I think the 4 clamp one would be more versatile for sure. Every step up has a few more advantages. I think this will do most fame work but you'll have to get creative sometimes. Is there an exact spot on the pinch weld these clamps should go?

    • @LakesideAutobody

      No. Generally they go as far to the rear or front as possible. When there's 4 clamps, you'll want to keep them as far apart as possible for max holding power.

    "Frame straightening" in a "small garage" made "easier" with "car dollies" to go along with the "tool truck" ground-level, hand-operated, portable and clamp-on "frame machine" that can "repair" any "bent frame" by "clamping" onto "body panels" spot-welded and "laminated" together and as far "outboard" of the actual "frame rails" in the "big steel box" aka "unibody" of any "unibody car" out there.
    As long as the "bent frame" isn't "bent" anywhere but at the "center of gravity, it "bent" without twisting and/or buckling, it's "bent" only so slightly that all four "points" are still on the "frame machine" and the jack stand/dollie "frame rack" AND you want to make "frame work" videos to "enjoyable" Top 40 album cut-length "how-to" videos that never actually end show "frame straightening" with actual "pulling" much less a "finished product" and a PAST-TENSE TITLE LIKE "FRAME STRAIGHTENING BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER "HIGHLIGHTS".
