  • I walk through Pico-Robertson, which is notable for its large Jewish population. It is located on the west part of Los Angeles, and is among the most densely populated neighborhoods in the city. There are many restaurants, private schools synagogues, and mikvahs.

    Just off the corner of Robertson and Pico there used to be a barber shop. Think it was called Rick’s. Got my first haircut there as a child around 1956.

    Excellent video, Sir! I'd like to add that Pico-Robertson is not strictly Chabad nor is Chabad the largest group of Orthodox Jews in the area (they'd love you to think that, but it's not the case.) Pico-Robertson has many Modern Orthodox Jews and some Chasidim including a Karlin-Stolin Synagogue (Karlin-Stolin is one of Chassidic dynasties.)

    Sorry I don't mean to correct you but you pronounced Chabad wrong. It's not ch like chew or ha . Also a Menorah has 9 Candles so the big candle holder you saw and the one on that tall building was a Menorah which is for Chanukah also not pronounced like chew. Thanks for the walk, I've never been in that part of L.A. Very enjoyable!

    • @Gemashke
      @Gemashke 3 роки тому +10

      There are three Major Ultra Orthodox Districts in Los Angeles: the Pico-Robertson District, the Fairfax/Beverly-La Brea District and also Valley Village in the San Fernando Valley. The Fairfax/Beverly-La Brea District is very Chassidic...in fact it's the largest Chassidic population outside of Brooklyn.

      @John Fish Went to Fairfax High School in the 60' you could hear the elderly Jewish men and women talking Yiddish, there were many aromas from open air markets, Canter's Deli and the smell of incense from HEAD shops selling posters, black lights and Psychadelic posters and music from the time period coming from outdoor speakers 🔊

    The thing that always struck me about Pico-Robertson was that for a somewhat affluent, tight knit community, a lot of people just throw their trash 🗑 in the streets. And the businesses don’t even bother to clean it up.

    Hidden, yet very segregated part of town and has been like that since the 80's. When people come and make comments as to how dry people are, this is one of the areas they are referring to. If you notice, nothing caters to children or other ethnic groups.

      There are many older folks living in this neighborhood. They are just not strolling the streets at their age. I would also guess most of the people who live in this neighborhood work. Again, they would not be walking around on a Thursday afternoon.
