Very great to see the 6773 back in operation even better to see an MLW FPA4 with a Canadian M3H horn mounted on it by far my most favorite Canadian horn of all time especially on this locomotive
And the sand-cast Canadian k3L on the b&o unit sounds like it should. It along with the m3h were mainstays of CN,cp, and via over several decades. I grew up with the sound of those. The m3h could do with a bit of machining or a new bronze nozzle in the highest note’s power chamber though, to get it that true minor triad chord. That said, the m3h’s didn’t always sound perfect back in the day. K-horns were/are simpler and needed/need less maintenance. I have , since 1995, examples of both and have rebuilt a couple m3h’s.
@ indeed they are one of my favorite Canadian horns to know and remember having grown up with the Queststar Inc./Pentrex Railroad series called great American scenic railways which featured a segment called Shenandoah which showcase two different railroads both featuring Alco powered trains the Winchester and western and the western Maryland scenic railroad what as Eyecatching the most was the segment covering the western Maryland scenic railroad which at the time had two Alco’s and 3 MLW FPA4 locomotives this segment covers three of the engines and the one that was eye catching was FPA4 engine number 305 which coincidentally operates today at the same place where 6773 resides now wearing her original number 6771 during her brief time owned by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad it was given the number 305 one number above the last Western Maryland FA locomotive and at the time she sported a Canadian M3H horn listening to that horn echoing around the surrounding mountains as the train traversed downhill through Helmstetter’s curve was truly amazing sound and engineer Ray Cameron did a spot on job quilling the horn for the crossing on the far end of the curve here’s a link to 6771 back then 305 in operation back in the early 90s before or during the acquisition of steam locomotive number 734 ua-cam.com/video/13d97PozHHg/v-deo.htmlsi=8dAod4QMOxB-_nit
Nice The Alco FPA-4 # 6773 sounds a lot like The Alco FPA-4 #305 that used to be on The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad back in the Summer of 1990 , 2:58
Great presentation.Love the m3h and sand-cast k3L horns, both the signature horns of CN, cp and via back in the day. Other owners in the US of these (MLW, the CDN. Alco subsidiary who made them) fpa4’s have switched the horns to k5la’s, Nathan p-horns ,etc , which is fine, but for this Canuck aren’t the “canadian” sound of the trains I grew up with, especially the m3h which was OEM on first gen diesels made here.
My special needs son really likes Alco's like those 2 he remembers seeing 6773 operating on the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams Arizona and is a little sad 😥 that it is not operating there anymore but is glad it has found a new place to work.
