The fact he ended up with good hearing and blindness is thematically consistent, he listened to his master but was blind to the future he forged for himself.
I love this interpretation. It also works with their rework, how he hears the worship from humans and despite recognizing how he is a prisoner, he is blinded by his desire to overcome Kain in terms of power when that doesn't really matter anymore.
I'd say remastered. Remake would not be right given the fact that the elder voice actor died. It wouldn't be right playing it without the OJ voice actors.

@@timsincher5149 they can remake the game from the ground up and keep the same performances in tact. Similar to what Bluepoint did with Demon's Souls. It needs more than just a fresh coat of paint, which a remaster would provide.
Hell yeah, you are talking true... that was a moment the player waited for through Soul Reaver I & II. I did not even expect to meet him anymore and got carried away by the story of Kain at that point so it felt like a thundrer struck 😁
Yeah, that WAS pretty epic. I remember when I first saw him, I was like "what the f**k is THIS?!" Then as he sniffed Raziel and made reference to the abyss, I nearly fell out of my chair. I was like "OOH! OOH! OOH!!! IT'S TUREL!!!! FINALLY!!!" And his "No more questions. No more worship, time to run. Time to scream. Time...to die" line was one of my favourite lines in the entire series (probably second only to Kain's "I always was considered heartless" line). Also, it was at that moment that I realised Turel was Mr. Gromble from Nickelodeon's "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" cartoon.
Here's what I believe happened to Turel post SL1: After Kain and Raziel disappeared into the timestream, Turel continued the plan to cover Nosgoth in thick smoke - either due to his loyalty to Kain, or with him basically taking the now abandoned throne. What matters is that Turel succeded and did in fact block sunlight from reaching the land's surface... which lead to all plantlife dying out. Without plants, animals (including humans) also died out as herbivores would go first, and then carnivores wouldn't last much longer after that. Without animals and humans, there is no blood for vampires to feed on, therefore a time of darkness and hunger. It's possible that the Hylden saw that timeline and decided to sumon Turel from there, as desparate and weakened, he would be much easier to posess, and provided blood from there - his body would become strong enough again to host them. Bonus: the near absolute absence of light could explain his evolution. Without light, sight is useless, but extremely accute hearing can thrive.
That's nice. This is the new part for me, that Turel stayed in the future and finished it off. That makes it tougher for Kain to return there and hope to get anything done. Maybe new life spreads outward from the new nature pillar, no sweat. Or else.... Kain's endgame would be aimed at some other time and place.
@@larrymcmacarroon9529 The pillars are ruined in that future, so I wouldn't count on the nature pillar... Raziel seemed genuinely shocked to see Turel devolved into something not as grotesque as the others and like you mentioned he probably noticed the similar bat like traits he and Turel had developed Plus Turel seemed like he wanted death even in his deranged state of mind so fighting Raziel must have been a desperate gamble against his own madness to achieve
@@TheMastermind729 Same. I think that's more likely the intention behind it. 'the others were grotesque but you? You look good!' doesn't quite have the same impact.
I'd argue it's that being pulled through time, turel has had a lot longer to evolve It's never stated how long he's under Avernus but given how much more devolved he is than in his sr1 design it could be centuries Given Turel answers by acknowledging how much he's changed and claiming to have surpassed Kain, it sounds like they're discussing how much further evolved/devolved he is than the others
Fantastic character study once again. I look forward to seeing whT you have in store next. Its so frustrating that we'll likely never see the conclusion to this story. I wish we could at least get a remake.
Isn't the reason that Turel was so powerful and didn't so much devolve as evolve because he was the second vampire lieutenant to be raised by Kain? We hear it from Raziel himself in Soul Reaver: "Melchiah was created last, and received the least of Kain's gifts." Implying that those born first received the most of Kain's gifts.
I think that can be said for his Soul Reaver 1 model but given enough time, even he changed so much to the point of being considered more grotesque by Raziel.
He was well fed, for being a prisoner, gifted blood is more powerful to a vampire than stolen blood, (stolen works too, but its like harvesting a little sister in bioshock, only 80 Adam, whereas gifted the same amount it would be 160), (common vampire lore) anyways he's been down there gifted sacrifice on a regular basis for at least a long minute.. Its no wonder he went beast mode
Locked in his environment, slavery and solitude drove him to madness and his evolutionary abilities adapted to cave like settings, eyes became useless, but yeah being the only one to have blood given to him willingly, on a regular basis no less, set him apart from the others as far as power scale goes
Going by the deleted dialogue, it gives the impression that Turel was the brother that Raziel was closest to, and that it disappointed him to see the one he respected most had chosen to be little more than a guard dog. I think it was more than just fatigue that initially stayed his hand, I believe Raziel just didn't want to fight his favorite brother.
Scraping every inch of *Soul Reaver* for Tural drove me to madness. I remember jumping up and down like an excited child when I finally got closer in *LOK :Defiance*
I personally have to thank the lord for your channel and your Legacy of Kain videos. it's always been my favorite series. While the gameplay can be called into question the story , writing and voice acting had always been beautiful and very Shakespearian. Thank you so much for your character study videos. You are a great creator and I hope to see more of your LOK videos soon. Stay wonderful .
One could argue that Raziel's execution had an upside in that it both opened his eyes and spared him from becoming a bona fide monster. He might have become almost entirely skeletal and lost his lower mandible, but at least he hasn't devolved, physically or mentally. Rahab was probably the most sane out of Raziel's brothers, while Zephon was barely sapient, and Melchiah had to assimilate and graft the flesh of others to his body just to stave off death.
There was something chilling and sad about their confrontation in Defiance. It makes Raziel’s journey feel so long and pointless in a way. Here he is, slaughtering the last of his brothers for the second time. An grinding, endlessly turning wheel of fratricide and betrayal that wears away whatever qualities the flawed warriors once had in their lives. Now they’re all just monsters fighting monsters.
By that point, I think killing Turel in Raziel's mind was more about tying up loose ends than fulfilling any desires of vengeance he once had Raziel had, I think, put those feelings to bed, and he was more concerned with discovering his true destiny He even had empathy for Turel being trapped in the disgusting bowels of Avernus
I prefer the SR1 cut design. It's also important to note that Turel and his clan were adept machinery craftsmen. It's presumable that they would have created siege weapons and traps for Kain's army, and also operated them. For an engineer, going blind is a greater curse.
Turtles was probably my favorite vampire lieutenant, and I do remember being sad we never saw him in Soul Reaver. When I later got to play Defiance, I did so with no online aid, so finding Hash A Gik was cool, but then I saw those ears, and remembered the Turelim from SR. I hoped really hard the game was going to slip the name, even though I still didn't expect it, and then they did, and I was thrilled! A nice loose end, finally tied up.
Thank you so much for helping in keeping this franchise alive. The story is so well written, and so many questions I had while playing the games so many years ago help get answered in this series.
Yay a new Soul Reaver video! Great one never knew he was scrapped in the first game as i was a kid then and thought thats how it goes but now i know your supposed to face Turel.
In Blood Omen at one point there is a mention of a mysterious Hash'agik cult in Avernus Cathedral; I was most impressed how the developers connected this one obscure detail to Turel in order to make Raziel meet him.
@@Skott_Kennedy yeah I think its a mod too, because your right he doesn't look mangled in any other version. He looks more like a hairless humanoid wingless manbat

Thanks for a great character study. Prior to watching this, I'd never seen the footage of Turel from SR1, so many thanks for sharing that. It always fascinated me how & why the vampire Turel was transported far back in time to serve as a god in the bowels of Avernus Cathedral. Now I have a measure of understanding as to why. It also fits with the dialogue from BO1. I think I prefer this to an encounter with him in SR1 (plus the version we get of him in Defiance) as it adds an interesting depth to the story. Can't wait to see what you have in store for this series. Would love at some point for you to cover fan efforts (games and websites) & maybe some of the rare comic strips from this series.
Very cool. I love these. Hopefully we get a video on raziels clan next, including whatever concept art may have been around to show a potential evolved raziel had he not been executed.
I always had a different interpretation of Turel's abduction time line. I understood that his darkness and hunger happened as a result of him being yoinked through space and time and kept locked up, wherever that may have been prior to the pit in Avernus. I figured he could even have been told what happened to his brothers while in the pit by his captors. Of course, there is a bit of contradiction there in "No, not possible. He fell..." and "I heard what you did to my brothers." Rather difficult to be shocked at a vengeance wraith when you get a memo on said wraith's fratricidal rampage :D Eh, chalk it up to possession madness.
...Perhaps in Dark Prophecy, we would've returned to the Soul Reaver 1 era as Raziel in a world covered compeltely in darkness, and then encountered Turel, maybe by allied with him briefly, before something happens and Raziel falls seemingly to his death, and shortly afterward Turel is abducted.
It's so cool to get those dialogues from the cancelled Turel's confrontation in SR1. I've never seen this part before. Also for Defiance, before entering in Turel's lair, you can see his clan symbol on the door.
I think I may be one of the lucky few who started this game series at the beginning. I can remember watching my dad play blood omen and the dollmakers place gave me nightmares for months, something about the music just creeped me out. But it was a great tale throughout the years, just wish they'd do more with this series.

This series deserves a remake. It was genius, and I'm sure people would very much enjoy a graphically and gameplay wise, enhanced Soul Reaver/Blood Omen series.
Gregg Berger should return to voice Turel in the remastered trilogy collection.
You are doing the lord's work. Always look forward to videos explaining the lore of this great franchise. 👍
Every video in your series is amazing. Please keep making this content. For those of us who genuinely love the legacy of kain series, your videos provide a huge respit full of nostalgia and comfort. There's not a lot of LoK content out there. So you're awesome for making it, despite the fact LoK is a niche subject. From your fans and fans of the series. We applaud you and thank you.
Just gotta say I'm happy LoK is getting traction almost 20 years(!) after the last game. Thanks for making these and spreading the lore.
Raziel seemed genuinely shocked to see Turel devolved into something not as grotesque as the others and like you mentioned he probably noticed the similar bat like traits he and Turel had developed
Plus Turel seemed like he wanted death even in his deranged state of mind so fighting Raziel must have been a desperate gamble against his own madness to achieve
Oh and here I thought he meant something like... "The others were grotesque but you're even uglier than them"
@@TheMastermind729 Same. I think that's more likely the intention behind it. 'the others were grotesque but you? You look good!' doesn't quite have the same impact.
@@uninvited1 yeah that just seems weird lol
@@TheMastermind729 hell id argue that Melchiah is uglier than Turel.
I'd argue it's that being pulled through time, turel has had a lot longer to evolve
It's never stated how long he's under Avernus but given how much more devolved he is than in his sr1 design it could be centuries
Given Turel answers by acknowledging how much he's changed and claiming to have surpassed Kain, it sounds like they're discussing how much further evolved/devolved he is than the others
How nice that they haven't forgotten about me in 2k21
Or 2024!
My masta
Fantastic character study once again. I look forward to seeing whT you have in store next. Its so frustrating that we'll likely never see the conclusion to this story. I wish we could at least get a remake.
Turel's voice acting is some of my fav in the games. I still listen to it from time to time. Thanks for the lengthy vid
Wow!! I never knew about the dialogue and character model! Man, I love this content. Thank you for shining light on all of our childhood memories
Thanks for watching :)
Check out the official Lost Worlds channel, it has an amazing breakdown of the alpha levels!
You are a gift to this fan community.
Isn't the reason that Turel was so powerful and didn't so much devolve as evolve because he was the second vampire lieutenant to be raised by Kain? We hear it from Raziel himself in Soul Reaver:
"Melchiah was created last, and received the least of Kain's gifts." Implying that those born first received the most of Kain's gifts.
Those LoK videos are making me have the same feeling that I had when I was playing the LoK games. Thank you, Richie, I'm a great fan of your job.
I want to thank you for giving me this piece of hidden treasure from my childhood!
I would love to share my old lok art. Ty for making these. Could you do one on the human citadel or maybe the spirit world?
Hello Queen of Madness - why don't you share it? I assume that there are plenty of people who would like to see your works ☺
Mannn.....keep these up!!!!! I was freakin waiting for this! I even go back and watch your old Legacy of Kain videos. These are great!
Can’t wait to see what you do next. It’s always a highlight when I see these vids pop up.
I am so happy that someone is still talking about this fantastic series. Keep it up.
By that point, I think killing Turel in Raziel's mind was more about tying up loose ends than fulfilling any desires of vengeance he once had
Raziel had, I think, put those feelings to bed, and he was more concerned with discovering his true destiny
He even had empathy for Turel being trapped in the disgusting bowels of Avernus
My favorite game's series ever. It is great that after so many years someone still talk about it!!
Exellent video!!
Awesome work. The SR1 design looks like it was an earlier stage in the evolution of what he ultimately became
Uploaded before 4 minutes and already 58 calls, 16 likes... nice work, dude 😀
Your videos are a pleasure to see for fans of LoK.
Just found this channel. I thought no one was talking about LOK in 2021. Thanks for the great content!
Thank you so much for helping in keeping this franchise alive. The story is so well written, and so many questions I had while playing the games so many years ago help get answered in this series.
Yay a new Soul Reaver video! Great one never knew he was scrapped in the first game as i was a kid then and thought thats how it goes but now i know your supposed to face Turel.
i waited so anxiously for this video! thank you so much for this amazing series on Legacy of Kain
"I smell water, tell me Turel; have you, like Rehab, learned to swim."
In Blood Omen at one point there is a mention of a mysterious Hash'agik cult in Avernus Cathedral; I was most impressed how the developers connected this one obscure detail to Turel in order to make Raziel meet him.
0:11 he looks a lot creepier than i remember.
i think he is using a mod, i looked up the turel scene and his ears arnt ripped up and his flesh does not look as decayed.
@@Skott_Kennedy yeah I think its a mod too, because your right he doesn't look mangled in any other version. He looks more like a hairless humanoid wingless manbat
Yes, it's a HD Defiance Retexture with Texmod by the UA-camr "The Hylden". If you want to play the game like this, you can download the Texmod here: www.fileplanet.com/archive/p-16225/Texmod-v0-9b
And the skins and ReShade here: drive.google.com/file/d/1sChw6N1veJxyHiSJOtewgoLBE3GMFlCV/view
SR1 Turel looks brutal, i wish the boss fight could be recreated
Have you considered doing a character study on the pillar guardians
I miss this series so much... :'(
I get so hyped when I see you post a new entry in this series.
Just wanted to say I love these character analysis from LoK and you're one of the few channels I have the notification set up for them.
Faustus, Marcus, Sebastian, and Magnus Character Studies next.
Not much character there to study.
Turel's monster form looks like a giant Gremlin to me
Keep em coming. I love these in depth look at all these Legacy Of Kain characters. Great job. 👍🏻
I loved seeing Turel in the second game. It was nice to get an answer for his absence. Stuck in a pit lol. But I just can't find him intimidating. Those ears, he reminds me too much of my dog
Hell yes! I'm loving these LoK videos!
Been looking forward to this 👌🏾👌🏾🔥🔥🔥
I've been waiting for SO LOOOONG
The depth of each characters in the LoK universe is amazing and these videos truly make them justice.
Thxxx, love those videos! I like when the vídeos come with captions, my english is trash but i understand when i read. Good Job!
He fell..." and "I heard what you did to my brothers." Rather difficult to be shocked at a vengeance wraith when you get a memo on said wraith's fratricidal rampage :D
Eh, chalk it up to possession madness.
...Perhaps in Dark Prophecy, we would've returned to the Soul Reaver 1 era as Raziel in a world covered compeltely in darkness, and then encountered Turel, maybe by allied with him briefly, before something happens and Raziel falls seemingly to his death, and shortly afterward Turel is abducted.
It's so cool to get those dialogues from the cancelled Turel's confrontation in SR1. I've never seen this part before.
Also for Defiance, before entering in Turel's lair, you can see his clan symbol on the door.
The unused Turel looks like a bigger scarier version of Dumah.
Another fantastic entry! I always look forward to these.
This man must be preserved for eternity
one of your best videos so far
6:46 Pathfinder morlock illustration all of the sudden! :O
Another great video! Can't wait for the next one!
honestly I love the look of the SR1 Turel and in truth would have been interesting to play SR1 as it was originally intended
I'd really love a show of all this
I really want to see a character study of Vorador and to know how the HELL he survived in BO2
There was supposed to be a scene in Blood Omen 2 explaining how Vorador was resurrected but it was cut for some reason.
I think I may be one of the lucky few who started this game series at the beginning. I can remember watching my dad play blood omen and the dollmakers place gave me nightmares for months, something about the music just creeped me out. But it was a great tale throughout the years, just wish they'd do more with this series.
I remember reading the background lore of the Legacy of Kain universe in an issue PlayStation Magazine years ago. The depth of the writing was amazing. Really ahead of their time. Still so much potential.
I'm glad to see there are still people making great LoK content. Love your channel man
Man it’s great to see there are still Legacy of Kain fans. I thought I was the only one.
how........HOW did I never notice the smoke stack!?
Great video I can’t wait for you to do one on the vampire Vorador.
Can't wait for the next video. Awesome material !
Kinda hoping you cover The Circle of Nine.
Found you today and have binged all these awesome job definitely have the like and sub
