Catch Clean Cook (Sea Robin Trash Fish Taste Test) -New England Pt.6

- Опубліковано 8 лис 2024
- Part 6 of the New England series takes place in Port Jefferson in Long Island, NY. A subscriber named Sam invited us to go fishing on his boat and target Sea Bass, Porgy, Albies and bluefish. Well Sam pulled up this crazy looking fish called a Sea Robin aka Flying gurnard. These fish are generally considered trash fish, but i'm here to dispel that myth in this Catch Clean and cook!

Glad you finally caught what we in New Jersey catch more than anything else.....the Sea Robin. Sea Robin belly is great bait for fluke/flounder though
#facts
true that bro
I have heard you are seeing an increase in numbers?
@@LandsharkOutdoors Sea Robbins have always been thick, as far as I can remember
Landshark Outdoors I haven’t seen any sort of statistics, but since most people who catch them throw them back that isn’t surprising in the least. Add skates to that list of fish people catch all the time unintentionally. Skates are more of a “nuisance” surf fishing.
Brook's right. I watch your vids regardless of the title or the thumbnail because I already know it's going to be great.
Thank you so much, need more people like you on UA-cam
Sam's parents did a great job raising him. Hope for the younger generation
Amen
Sams so great! His filets looked awesome!
He’s gonna be a killer when he grows up !
Vic, you should try bleeding your fish out before cleaning them (they must be alive so the blood can pump out). I have found that it makes the fish taste better and you always get nice white fillets. It also keeps all the blood off the cleaning table. On most fish there is a main artery that can be clipped just behind the gills on the bottom of the fish.
Absolutely important & correct amongst other positive things.
I bonk or spike and then immediately bleed - the fish is dead but still bleeds out quite a lot.
Came here to say this
I live in Connecticut and have been eating sea robin for years I take the tails of and clean them immediately like bleeding out a other fish that’s the trick sautéed with butter fresh they are like lobster learned this from a old time fisherman when I was a kid and I am 57 great videos keep up the good work. BK
I watch all your guys videos no matter what. I truly enjoy your channels. I don’t watch any other fishing channel.😊
Thank you!!!!!!
😊
you need to be a news broadcaster for sure!! You are so polite and give everybody a chance to talk. Super AWESOME JOB MAN!
100% Not everyone gets this!
Use salt to get that slime off, that's what we use for slime on catfish
But the humiliation of getting caught with a cooler full sea robins.
Not if your mother's from Ireland lol. She calls them gurnards and loves it when I get her some of them.
lol its a restaurant fish in germany. i feel like this "trash fish" thing is an american thing only...
Listen I recently went on a Massachusetts fishing trip and went on a whim and had the mate filet a few for me. I would take sea robin nuggets over the porgy any day. You have too season it well though. Thank me later guys !!
I'm 3rd gen Japanese American and have never heard of "trash fish" until recently. If it fits in the pan and it's not full of worms or toxic, then I'm good lol.
had strange looks when keeping a bunch of stingray, no humiliation, just pitty that they don't know what they're missing
Great videos , those are searobins I catch them all the time here in Jersey they are very tasty fish dont no why they are considered trash fish
DELICIOUS!
man i went to sandhook a couple of weeks ago and thats all i caught i went home with 3 of them they taste good to me . i think people just see the fins and are scared to taste it
We need more New England!!!!!!! I fish in the Long Island sound and there just aren’t enough people who make vids there
Big shout out. Love your trash fish segments because as you say "they are any trash fish just trash cook"
Man o' man Porgies!!!....... back in the 1970's my dad, cousin and I use to rent out a John boat out in Huntington Bay, NY and fish until we had no more bait. We'd catch them at 3-4 per line and at that size that you've caught them at. Between the 3 of us we would fill up our ice chest of 100+ porgies easy. Fine memories of my dad, mom and I would scale and gut them out and prep them for the fridge, we'd finished prepping till morning when the sun is just creeping up. Great video!
Holy Porgy sounds like you guys had enough to last through the winter lol
@@LandsharkOutdoors in one of your video's you purchase a half coffin freezer ours look identical to yours but ours look like the size of a real coffin or larger. You can get tired of eating fish daily but never tired of catching them. Tight lines my friend.
U know Vic, I am a huge fan cuz I think you two are adorable!! I try to watch all of your videos because I know it helps keeping you monitized. It helps support you😁!!
I started watching fishing videos last January and found you first, and found Brooke from you. I was no weight baring for almost 8 weeks and I watched my way through a ton of your videos, I think they are great!! When I am not watching fishing I am watching homesteaders growing their farms. Keep up the great work!! One of these days we will hit the east coast of Florida and try sea fishing
There’s no such thing as trash fish it all depends on how you cook anything
A good cook can make an old leather shoe taste good
I know it's 8 months, but I'd definitely think that eating fish that can sustain themselves in highly polluted waters (such as NYC) are definitely trash fish, especially considering the rate of carcinogens housed in these pests
Idk bro, you ever tried mudfish?
Dude that fish taste like shit man
Lobster used to be a trash fish
It looks kinda like a pleco crazy stuff! Great episode. If you can cook you can make all fish good. Thumbs up!
My grandfather used to catch Sea Robin somewhere south of Queens. He would bring home a bag of them and would cut them in the sink. The meat is in the tail fillets--which is almost everything behind the fins. When he was a kid, sea robin was called 'Chicken of the Sea'. It's really good meat and makes great fritters.
Sir and Mam .. I dont know how old you two are .. but .. I want to thank you for the knowledge and experience that you show us . the world .. I watch you both and this video shows a lot of your knowledge and smarts . lol . thank you both
When trying a new fish for the first time, I go butter and a bit of ground pepper. If it's good like that, throw the spice cupboard at it for all your favorite recipes. 👍
That fish is insane! Bro crazy never seen anything like it and I just caught my personal best yesterday!
They don't even look real hahaha
This place is amazing has beautiful fish, Congratulations Fishing was wonderful.
Hug and good fishing.👍🎣🐠
Sea Robins are known as Gurnards in Australia, excellent eating
Same here in the UK ... B-)
Yea I live in Australia as well
South Africa as well where it's prized for its taste
Those Blues are perfect eating size. Those are some of the best eats.
Seeing Vic catch fish makes me wanna go fishing.
Thats the idea haha
Nice job explaining how to trim the bloodline and preparing the Sea Robin fish.
If people only know how to prepare fish properly!!!
Thank You so much Viktor. You have finally answered my question I been having for a supper supper long time. I took a picture of the name of the seasoning because thats what i been wanting since i have been a subscriber and follower
Love your videos, AND THE FAMILY INTERACTION! If you think a sea robin is strange, wait till you catch a bat fish...
Don't think I've ever seen one haha
I’m from cape cod it’s funny seeing a florida boy seeing a robin for the first time and all the New England fish
Paul Prudhome invented blackening fish. He was a very famous chef in New Orleans. He passed several years ago but his restaurant K Paul’s in still open in New Orleans. Get yourself a Cast iron skillet for Blackening. You’ll love it.
Wow so cool to see you both were fishing up in the North East in New York near me. I fish on the beach and it is so true about the Sea Robin. Many people don't know you can even eat a Sea Robin. I have caught Sea Robins and given them to my friends who eat fish and they loved it! One word of advice, I would bleed out any fish right after it has been harvested and put the fish on ice in a cooler, that would help with the blood line and less dark pieces of meat. When you fillet the fish, it will make it easier to fillet as well, as the meat will be stiff. There's another trash fish called a spiny dog fish, it looks like a shark. Those fish are totally edible and many throw back as well, but in some parts of Massachusetts, they make fish and chips with it. Keep up with the great videos and be well! Tight Lines!
Sea robin/gurnard is a fish (among others) that the French feel you can't make bouillabaisse without. Keep up the great work!
I need to make bouillabaisse!!!
Just gut em and take the heads off, and deep fry in 400 degree peanut oil skin and all...very user friendly
"yer killin me Smalls"
I love this family! just show up one day and never leave ????
I remember a vid with like ten of those chasing a bait up to a guys feet while wading. Like a pack of wolves. Great video
Loved the episode and your channel. I live on Long Island and fish the party boats out of Port Jeff very often. I remember reading about how sea robin make excellent table fare 40 years ago in a weekly fishing magazine called the "Long Island Fisherman". About 20 years ago on a slow fluke trip, I kept a couple and fried them along side of the fluke fillets and was pleasantly surprised. To this day I will keep a couple of BIG sea robins when fishing for fluke during the summer months.
Brooke nailed it. I watch the videos because I know and like your content. The thumbnail and title game doesn't bother us at this point. Also, people really need to get over the entire concept of "trash fish." If you are eating your fish pan fried in a bit or butter or oil with only salt and pepper you might be able to tell subtle differences between fish. But I am certain if you went and caught a mixed bag of reef fish, keeping things you didn't normally (spottails, grunts, pinfish, pigfish etc) and serve them up together nobody is going to pick out the one "garbage" fish from that. Are blue runners trash? They make good bait, and you probably don't want to make fish sticks from them. But as sushi they are fantastic. It is all about prep and handling. And knowing which fish does what well. You guys get this and it's one of the best things about both your channels. When the ocean gives you lemon (sharks)...
Couldn't have said it better! You nailed it
i don't get the trash talk about the sea robin at all...in the Netherlands we eat them alot. clip the fins away, gut it, and than pull the head backwards over it;s back and skin it in one go. easy as it can come, than bake, fry or...keep whole except guts, salt them and smoke..smoked is super tastefull. try it
Hahaha, of course this is the Long Island video. So happy you guys came to LI and Port Jeff! Sam did a great job putting you on the fish. And just like everyone here, I’ve also tried Sea Robbin. On LI’s south shore, their populations are out of control now... perhaps I should start harvesting! Hope you guys will make the trek up here again.
Def going up again! you gotta try it!
That's the first salt water fish I've ever caught and I was so amazed and ur just like TRASH FISH catch and cook
It's great you are fishing with kids. Looks like you had a great day. Sea Robins have a nice filet in the tail and good eating. Like you said you have to get rid of that bloodline. Blackened seasoning on fish is the best. I see you were fishing close to my friend Joe's Secret Spot for Blackfish, the Old Field Lighthouse. Glad you featured Long Island fishing. You guys are great.
Brooke said it best man! I'm watching every video you and her both drop. I make sure to always "like" everyone of them, I'm not sure how UA-cam works, I just now its beneficial in some way, so I always make sure to do it and I made sure to turn on notifications for your new videos and Brooke's 😊😊
Jenifer, thank you for the support!!!
Sea Robins! I get those off Long Island.
I hate to be that guy, but... you filleted in wrong. It's surprisingly easy once you know how, and it makes a big difference. The best fillet video on UA-cam to search for is from a New Zealand fish processor. Just search "how to fillet gurnard New Zealand." You'll target these fish once you get the hang of it. Oh, look for Sea Robin soup videos, the head and bones make amazing stock. In France, Bouillabaisse is best made with Gurnard/Sea Robin. Yes, the Atlantic Sea Robin works perfectly. They're also common for fish and chips. They're also super popular sold whole in NYC Chinatown, but are also found on some pricey trendy menus in the city.
Also, we call small Bluefish "Snappers" in parts of the Northeast. (Not to be confused with "Blue Snapper" which is what they call Atlantic Pollack in the Asian markets around New York.)
Thanks for the education, love both of your channels I'm stuck in a rehab so no fishing anymore for me so i do it thru you all 💕👍😁
here in Europe this species is very popular. I like the meat a lot. Keeps the moisture very good when cooking.
Sea robins are really cool creatures 💪
hell yeah they are
Nice job guys. Its always fun catching sea robins
Would’ve never thought you would be on my stomping grounds! Glad you guys enjoyed !
Great vid as always. That sea robin looks so much bigger than the sea robins im used to seeing in northeast florida. Keep them lines tight
Keep up your good work, Viktor!
This is very interesting looking fish cause here in Portugal we eat a lot of this species. They have blue dots on the wing like a butterfly.... And we cook themvwith just flounder and egg... Just that and they taste great. we don't cut them... we just take off the guts.. and straight to the pan
Victor,
My mantra regarding fish that have large bloodlines or are traditionally considered to be "fishy" tasting is very simple. Milk, milk, milk! Simply marinate in regular milk or buttermilk. I personally use regular milk with lemon juice and it basically becomes buttermilk. Try it. And maybe do a CCC using this method.
Keep up the bangers bro. Love the ccc!
Thank you, lots of fish content coming your way!
@@LandsharkOutdoors waiting on it bud! Proud of u guys! U should come slay some AlaBama bass with me! very big AlaBama bass!
if you soak fish fillets in water it will draw out a lot of the iron and nutrients in the blood line and clear it out. I usually put "trash fish" in a ice water bath when traveling long distances. like from Ga to Fl or Al or NC. always draws out the blood. it works on non oily fish. less on oilier fish.
You should try smoked bluefish. In Australia it’s a prized eating fish
Although considered by many to be trash fish, Sea Robins are good eating. Challenging to fillet. The size bluefish you’re catching are called snapper blues in New England. That size is the best eating as they aren’t very oily.
I personally have nothing against sea Robin's. I usually keep 1 or 2. They taste great. For porgie's I don't fillet them because of how soft the meat is. Porgy tastes alot better whole and if possible deep fried or pan fried. If you do fillet keep skin on and pan fry them till the skin gets super crispy.... Uff.... Love it guys y'all are amazing keep up the amazing work.
Gurnard, or sea Robin as you call it, is awesome as, try it out without too much seasoning and the meat is actually sweet its really good eating down here in New Zealand!
I haven't been around your channel long but everyone I've watched has me more and more intrigued. Would you do a pacu cath and cook?
I live in New Zealand where we call those sea robins gurnard. They are a very popular eating fish - one of my personal favourites. Firm , medium fish taste and they hold together well when cooked. Trash fish? No way!
I love your videos you're so down to earth
cool dude sam
Porgies and fluke are my favorite fish to fish for and eat
Great catch and cook, we get sea robins here in Texas too. As a small UA-camr, I couldn't agree more about the importance of the thumbnail and title!
It’s very Challenging but marketing is crucial for any business !
Thanks Vic......keep them coming
I’m a huge fan and live in port Jefferson I wish I saw you
I catch those Sea Robins all the time in the Long Island Sound. It never occurred to me to keep one and eat it.
I think you will find that you may meet your match with the Ladyfish. Lets see a catch and cook with one of those. Good luck!
Morton and basset Chilli powder, salt to taste finish with lemon. Had my first one today came out really good. Won't keep unless I'm catching 4 or 5 of them. Very little meat
If you rub salt on them it gets a lot of the slime off then it’s a little easier to fillet.. I’m from Connecticut and we catch so many up here we get hazed for keeping them but they are pretty good..
Fishing off the FSH190!!! That’s what I got👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Brooke is bang on the Button!..we will watch regardless..
If anyone has issue about thumb nails and Mind Games they dont need to be watching this Channel, your followers know you and Brooke are Good value all Round👍👍👍😎😎😉
I catch those all the time here in Florida in new Smyrna beach in the rivers, and I’ve never eaten them but now I gotta give them a try
I have been eating them for years. Delicious.
The preparation is what makes the taste. Good move on cutting out that red meat. Looks good!
Seriously amazing catching the hat
Keep up the great content, congrats on your house
good job guys! a sea robin... large wings...watch it, he got teeth too! freaky! taste like white or flounder... bluefish.. TASTY! two of my favorites in basic salt water fish...., bluefish and snook! yum son use to catch sword fishing for me when i lived on island
Maybe you already knew this man, but we actually have these in Florida, just not quite as big. Bi-catch of flounder fishing.Tight lines!
I have never seen one personally but yes we get them, just not in the numbers seen in the North
Superb eating! One of my favourite fish to catch here in the UK. Never understood why so many Americans consider them 'trash fish'???
I suppose it's because they're not exactly pretty, and many Americans seem to turn up their nose at any fish that complicates creating fillets out of them. Just look at the many, many catch and cook videos by Americans on UA-cam and they nearly always fillet the fish. Other preparations like cooking a fish whole just aren't seen much. Many Americans don't even eat fish or other seafood often, if at all, often due to price.
Outside of the larger metropolitan areas many people are culinarily unadventurous, and that also extends to fish with a bad reputation for whatever reason. Fish that are undesirable for one reason, like the invasive Asian carp, then are erroneously claimed to "taste like dirt since they're bottom feeders" because people are ignorant and confusing them with the more common...uh...common carp.
Birds birds everywhere, great strip bait for fluke and make awesome fish sammies
I have caught a few in central Florida. Mostly in shallower water and only one as large as the one in the video.
The only people that call it trash fish, are the ones who've never tried it lol
If you rub salt on the skin it should help eliminate the slime. It works on eels and some other fish
We call the antipodean variant, gurnard in NZ. They taste great. Bit of an art to gutting and skinning them but they are probably rated a top 5 down there.
Would love to try it one day
I just called this fish today and I didn’t know what it was thanks for letting me know
Across the pond here we call them gurnard and the French call them poulet de mer or chi ken of the sea a good meaty fish I roast it wrapped in bacon try it so good
Love the cooking now show us how you make your cafe bustelo perfect after a great seafood meal.
hahahah you have no idea how much I missed my cafe bustello after being out of town for so long! Nothing like your own coffee!
Thanks guys. They make great bait, but my conscience always pricks me when I look at the quality of the meat. Now you embolden me to indulge. We call it batfish in Saint Vincent, so I just couldn't find a video to know how to prepare. I am extremely greatfull. Keep it up. Love you guys.
Great couple , great fishermen, great people. Love this. And brook’s channel. Im feom belgium, we don’t have to these privileges here. I really. Really want to join you guys on one or the everglades CC&C. Greetz. 🔥❤️
You are truly a fisherman because birds fly in FLOCKS! :D And I can't believe you never caught or saw a sea robin before. And when it comes to bluefish, under eight inches we call schoolies, 8 to 15 inches we call snappers and bluefish larger than 15 inches we call choppers because of the length of finger you can lose if mishandle....... "A school of Birds!" Victors, I'll be laughing for days! Thanks!
It’s all over ny Long Island
Great CCC! As you say there is no trash fish. I would definitely try any fish as long as it’s not poisonous! Still looking forward to see you guys do a CCC with Bluegabe &/or deermeatfordinner.
I consider the common skate a trash fish. They are ok for lobster pot bait. Which I believe to be an excellent trade with Poseidon himself. I would rather eat simmered down codfish heads for fish chowder than eat the tenderloin or filet mignon from a skate. I'm talking skates here not the faux sea scallop stingray cousins.
those sea robins are all over in south florida. we only catch then here and there. but when scuba diving they are all over
I’m from New york and my friends told not to take home 🏠 the sea robins i took them anyway. My friends told me only chinese people eat them, now i know why, they 👅 taste 👍 great .I fried them breaded with 🌿 oregano 🧄 garlic, cumin, salt and pepper rub. They are so 😋 tasty,I can’t wait to catch some more.
Chinese people: More for us!
there pretty good used to live there about 4 years ago
Did you want broad speck of visitors or only Floridians? I live in Hawaii. I came up when 18. My father fed me fish and told me is chicken. I smelled like fish but said "chicken" to everyone. I dont eat fish fits but watching you. Slovakian? I am impressed. Keep us informed.
You are a puoneer.
Im from long island, ny and we dony keep these fish. But they put up a he'll of a fight, and good for practice with your kids.
You should do more inshore catch an Cooks!!
they are considered delicacies in some cuisines. ik there are very high rated chefs in france that cook them in very cool ways. been around em my whole life, and had no idea to try them until this summer. ive heard the easiest way to cut them is by ripping the spine out from the tail after using the head to pull the guts out and cooking the body stuffed whole. the walking on the deck and barking thing freaked 7 year old me out long ago lol. scup can also make some great beer battered nuggets too
