Alot of cultures consider herring, cod, and mackerel a staple in their diet, as you mentioned on another episode. " There is no bad fish, just bad cooks". If a fish, as I understand it, starts having a fishy smell, or taste, it is starting to go bad. You take care of your fish, so it shouldn't taste fishy. Catfish, and tilapia have almost the same flavor, kind of muddy. But treated right, soaked in cold water and salt. Then fried in bacon grease, and onions, they taste phenomenal. So good job. Made me hungry.
I’ve been waiting for a mackerel catch and cook for so long!!! On the Oceanside CA pier you’re basically guaranteed to get a 5 gallon bucket full of pacific mackerel. I think they’re a bit smaller and bonier, when I cook them sometimes it’s better than tuna (sashimi, Spicy tuna rolls, pan fried or in some sort of casserole) but it can be hit or miss for me, sometimes it’s so bad I want to throw up and stop fishing for a couple days 😅
I trained in a Japanese kitchen and mackerels were a staple. We used to gut them. Heavily salt the inside , lightly salt the outside. Throw the whole fish on a grill and give it a good char. The fish then peels away from the bone in long pickle spear like quarters. Dip in a little ponzu to cut the oil and some ground daikon radish and green onion. Fantastic! Absolutely fell in love with mackerel ever since.
those mackies are the best fish in the world. They are a staple here in the uk. People go wild over smoked mackerel in scotland. Keep up the good work Victor, you got the best catch clean cook channel on youtube
We ate mackerel a lot, And all of the bait fish you got They are NOT Trash fish, They maybe “Trash Fish” to Americans because we have so much food or fish to choose from. But outside the United States, these are FOOD/ primary source of protein... And they taste good, by just cooking them simply without the “fancy” spices we have here... Just salt them and throw in the open fire/grill... they are as good as any other fish! -😍 your show as well as Brooks!
But believe its really tasty, a lot of people doesn't know how to prepare, must put in freeze temperature and then you can defrost and prepare, and on the grill like sardines tipical dishe in Portugal 😋😋😋😋😋so good
mackerel has become one of my favorite fish to eat...its probably one of the healthiest as well...salt, pepper, garlic powder and cook it up in some butter you're good to go!
I have never had raw mackerel that I've liked but for some reason once you grill or pan fry it I think they are fantastic if fresh. I'm loving these New England videos (originally from Boston).
“On the next episode, we’ll get Carl to eat bluefish “ 😂 Vic & Brooke both of you live and breath sustainable fishing. And that is why you are my channel GOAT!
Same here in sweden, love them smoked! My favorite though is the small/young ones, usually first in the spring migration here in sweden, much leaner, just perfect to fry in butter, pinch of salt, pinch of pepper and with the first potatoes of the year. It's religious to me :)
That was awesome Victor, over here in San Diego EVERYONE would dismiss mackerel as a trash bait fish...I really enjoyed this video and honestly I'm gonna try this exact catch and cook. Thank you for the inspiration.
Dog Dude Drone a lot of Filipinos take home buckets full of Mack’s from the Oceanside pier. Sometimes I take them Home too and sometimes they taste good
We here in New England have been eating mackerel all our lives and your right it's all in how it's prepared. It's to bad you didn't get a tuna we would have loved to see you clean & cook one of those big boys :-)
Where I am from Mackerel is almost the only fish we eat and the one we wait for in the spring. They arrive in may. I always catch enough mackerel while fishing for seabass (European, Branzino) and keep a few to bring home while releasing all seabass. Many ways to cook Mackerel, I even tried cooked in water with white wine and spices (court bouillon) then eaten cold with mayo. (like eating crab just not as good). So in june get on the boat before sun rise, hunt for seabass all morning, come back for lunch with few mackerel cleaned on the boat, (no cleaning with fresh water), set the bbq with coal or wood even better, just rub inside and out with olive oil salt and pepper and lay them straight on their back, try to find the correct balance to have them stay straight on their back as this is the thickest part to cook and you will not have to turn them at the risk of damaging their skin if it sticks to the grill. When the flesh is white inside they are done. Eat simply with new potatoes fresh out of the garden simply boiled with skin then dried in the pot with lots of salt. A nice glass of local cider and you are set. It is still early afternoon but you feel already that the day was successful, it is going to be a great summer, the grass is thick, the garden is full of aromas. Note that some will disagree and eat the seabass, Seabass is for fishing fun, mackerel for eating and tests better to me.
We have huge schools of what we call slimy mackerel on the east coast of Australia. I've eaten them often on the fishing boat as sashimi . We also fillet and smoke them and use them as sandwich filling. They are the best livebait for tuna, spanish mackerel, sailfish and marlin. Cheers Ron.
Hey! This is my domain. I live on Cape Cod, MA! Glad to see you and Brooke enjoyed yourselves and got the most out of your trip! Hope you come back sometime again and if you do next summer, you gotta go for some fluke (summer flounder)! That was my specialty this summer along with the black sea bass and striper.
I know that boat really well . He’s a harpoon boat out of sandwich ma . Glad You had a great time . We were catching them really good last 2’weeks in rough weather .
Another fantastic show! Great captain and crew. Tuna fishing like shark fishing is a waiting game but then pays off big. I will check Brooke's channel too. I jumped in while shark fishing off Long Island and touched a Mola one time. I'll pass on eating mackerel though. I was hoping to see more drone video. Nice shots of the whales. Great video.
When makrell migration hits Sweden in the spring I'm always on the spot, I just love these fish, they are so tasty! Using ultralight gear is such a joy too:) formidable fighters!
Hey Viktor Love your's and Brooke's videos. I have seen you hand catch the DJI in a few videos and wanted to give you a little tip. If you go into the settings on the controller 3 dots upper right corner which is general settings> visual navigation> advanced> landing protection> disable. It, it will not rev-up and try to get away from you when you are hand catching it. You will be able to reach up grab it, and with your other had push down on the joystick and it will nicely shut off in your hand. Hope you can use this technique. Keep the great videos coming Congrats on the engagement and the new house.
It's really how you cook Mackeral. I used to be meh about but then tried out the way Koreans make it (lightly floured and cooked or braised with a spicy sauce) now I love it. It's a solid easy fish to eat often

Hi Victor if you would like to try something different after you fillet your fish dredge them in salt pepper and flour fry them until done set aside caramelize three or four onions until golden brown put the fish back on top of the onions turn up the heat Shake red wine vinegar all over them put the lid back on with them Steam for about 5 minutes you'll need a piece of Italian bread or sourdough and enjoy don't be afraid to sprinkle on that red wine vinegar.
My dad is from mattapoisett and I live in Florida. we go up there like 2-3 times a year and my whole family loves it there you should try the blue crabbing too at eel pond use a chicken leg on a s tring and throw it out there. In just a little while of waiting you will have them pulling the string so slowly pull them in and scoop them up with a net. They might not be around as much right now but if you go in the summer they are everywhere
Fresh mackerel makes great sashimi. Keep some good soy on the boat and bring yourself some sushi rice for an onboard catch clean cook video. Would love to see you guys enjoy something fresh on the water :)
Mackerel are delicious smoked, do a brine recipe of brown sugar and salt, I also add pickling spices to add some pep to mine. I make pates and such with it for family get together's
Hey guys here in Venezuela tarpon is considered trash fish, but in our family we have prepared it as hamburgers fish balls and a friend of mine as steaks, how about in the US? I don't even think that there are that many trashy cooks just mindset, in Asia we eat a wider variety of fish we dry them eat it raw we even ferment it. Keep on the great work & good fishing!
in the uk we dont get many big game fish but i like to fish for atlantic mackerel all the time on very light tackle and its great fun and absolutely lovely to eat, the smaller ones taste better than the big ones in my opinion
that is actually my favorite fish (mackerel) ...pan fried or grilled or broiled (whole on the bone) so good dipped in soy sauce/vinegar chili dipping sauce with piping hot white rice... oy... I kind of want this fish to remain unpopular so the prices will stay low... its a cheap fish but it is sooooo good!!!
I eat these mackerel all the time. A great preparation is the Japanese sushi technique called Shime Saba. You cure the fillet a few hours in salt, then marinate it in rice vinegar for 15 min. Serve over sushi rice with sesame seeds, seaweed, and chopped scallions. You'll thank me later.

Smoked on the grill was amazing the last time I had it. Just don't over cook it. The skin of mackerel is actually sweet.

Vik the next time you go to the cape, go in the summer and go on a charger to the canyons for yellowfin, bigeye, and blue marlin
Here in UK, smoked Mackerel with cracked black pepper is very popular with a fresh salad. Very healthy, high in Omega 3.
