Hey! Sorry for the late reply! Life just gets busier and busier this time of year! And thank you 😊 they work wonders! Hope you're keeping well mate! 😊💚🌱
Ah thank you! I'm well chuffed with the spring bulbs this year! Got a few more tulips to come and it won't be too long before the alliums start popping up! Hope you're keeping well 💚😊🌱
Oh how exciting I absolutely love potato planting time!! If you can reuse your old soil and get good results with the top up of manure and things, why not!! That was a huge harvest of rhubarb I would have snapped it up as well. Your spring bulbs looks so good and I am looking forward to seeing you the allium flower box when it is in full bloom! Exciting season ahead for you Jake 🪻🌷happy easter!
Hey 👋🏽 Same here, but digging them up is even better! It's like digging for gold! Oh we get sooooo much rhubarb with all the crowns I have down on the plot but it soon goes at work and we usually end up with a freezer full to see us through autumn and winter! I'm well chuffed with the spring bulbs this year! Just so colourful and cheery to start the gardening year off! I hope you had a lovely Easter with family and friends! Take care 😊🌱💚
Looking amazing as always Jake and the spring flowers are gorgeous. Glad you have some time off to simply enjoy the allotment. Happy Easter 🐣, Ali 🌞🐣🇨🇦
Hey Ali! Sorry for the late reply, it all gets a tad busy this time of year! I hope you had a lovely Easter with your family and friends and I hope you don't have anymore snow on the way! Time for some sunshine!! 🌞😊🌱💚
Happy Easter Jake .Spring bulbs looking beautiful 😍 Loving all the shrubs but oh the innocence on the bamboo .If it gets out of hand I'll just dig it up 😂 Good luck with that approach 😉
Hey Susie! Sorry for the late reply, this time of year is bonkers with the garden, work and life in general! 😅 I have been told by so many to watch that bamboo. I did do my research and they seem to be clump forming, but they're planted now, so I can't really go back now 😂 let's just hope it's not a 'told you so' moment! 😅😂 Hope you had a lovely Easter with friends and family! Lovely to hear from you as always 💚🌱😊
Great vid Jake, glad you have got plenty of time off over Easter. I’m having to care for my elderly dad for 2 days but today is all mine and I think I’ve got the best weather so will be clearing my brassica bed as a lot of them bolted as soon as the better weather came along and planting my first early potatoes , onion sets and peas out. My black Sambucus is looking the same as yours but I’m sure they will both bud up soon. Have a great weekend
Hey Nicki 😊 I have my grandparents, so I know what you mean. It's nice to get away and do you for a bit! I hope you managed to get your jobs done down on the plot! I'm glad your sambuca is looking like mine. I checked on it today and I can't see any new shoots and it looks a little wet, so fingers crossed it will bounce back! I hope you've had a decent week Nicki and make sure you take time to look after yourself 💚🌱😊💚
Hi Jake, Early spuds and Maincrop grow differently. Earlies grow at the same level, so...as the plant grows, it puts spuds out horizontally at the level you planted them. If you plant two or three spuds in the bottom third of the pot, they will grow at that level and the rest of the pot will be just compost. Therefore you can plant them at different depths. With maincrop varieties, as the plant grows vertically, it puts out spuds all the way up the plant, giving you spuds the full length of the plant. that's why you have to earth them up to keep the light off of them.
Hey Stephen 😊 yes, you can get determinate and indeterminate potatoes but both can be main crop and early potatoes. A lot of earlies tend to be determinate, but not all of them 😊💚🌱
I have been harvesting my rhubarb since mid March- 2 cuttings now. Nothing like fresh rhubarb, is there? I have forget me nots that take over my perennials and smother them. I have to pull some up and relocate them. the Heleniums seem to be particularly affected by being crowded out. I must finish planting out my potatoes. I have planted up a tub and have some in the ground. I need to plant my 2nd early potatoes into tubs and the ground soon. I add fresh compost and some poultry pellets or blood fish and bone to the compost to boost the nutrients. I like growing potatoes in pots as they area so easy to harvest and come out nice and clean. Your lilies will appreciate the shade given to their roots by your annuals. " of my climbing toses suddenly died last year, despite looking fabulous and heavy with blooms in June. Very sad. One called Buff Beauty was my favourite rose 😞Beautiful spirea. It could be Goldflame with those bright leaves. If it gets red tips then it is definitely Goldflame. Some bamboos are clumping and some are spreading so hopefully yours is a clumper and won't become a nuisance. They are easy to cut off the culms when they first push through, to avoid them overtaking the area. I love Sambucus Nigra. They usually have pretty pink flowers which look stunning against the purple leaves- don't forget great for wildlife - firstly with the pollen and then later he berries. Pruning Hydrangea paniculata types is useful, especially in Annabelle, to strengthen and thicken stems so te flowers don't droop down. Mop head types, Macrophyllum etc, should not be pruned right down. Just from the previous flower head to the first set of buds below, My carrors seem late so I am going to sow some insurance plants in pots in the greenhouse. parsnips aren't showing yet either but it has been wet, cool and windy. Thank you for a great video. Happy gardening 🙂
Oooo, I do love fresh rhubarb, especially stewed up with some custard or even in a crumble! People at work love it as well. I find that, but I find the poached egg plants are the worst for doing it because they just spread everywhere! I have some heleniums, so I better uncover them next weekend! I've managed to get my potatoes out in the garden today! So we're slowly getting there! Sounds like you've got a beautiful garden yourself with all those beautiful plants you've mentioned! Ill have to give you a close up of the spirea so you can tell what it is. And as for the bamboo, I did some research and they seem to be clump forming but people have been telling me otherwise, so it's just a wait and see jobby! If not, we'll have plenty of canes for the garden 😅 and thank you for the tips on the hydrangeas! My carrots don't seem to be showing themselves! And I normally wait until the end of April for my parsnips so you have plenty of time to resow some seeds! Hope you've had a lovely weekend out in the garden! Take care and I hope you have a lovely week ahead of you 🌱😊🌼💚
Potatoes are INDETERMINATE or DETERMINATE, basically some varieties grow out & others grow on top of mound. Find out what variety your planting & you will no weather to mound or not. Great vid
Yessss! I should have gone into that in more detail, but hopefully I have redeemed myself in the latest potatoe video! I feel like I've confused people more than help them on that front! Take care 💚😊🌱
Great video Jake. Can I pick your brains please? We’re in the middle of having our sloping garden at home made level and it’s going to need quite a lot of material to fill it. Do you know if it would be better to use just topsoil or a mixture of that and compost? It’s going to need about 4 tons I think. Thanks Deb
Hey Deb! Sorry for the late reply! Life gets bonkers this time of year! I would say you would want a mixture with the compost under the topsoil to weight it down a little. Too much compost will start to move when the rain comes, so I'd say compost and then add a layer of topsoil but just enough so that when you plant, you plant roots are just in the compost underneath! I hope that helps! Hope you've had a lovely week 💚😊🌱
