Hi Jessie and your Mum, what a great job building your bean frame! Those root trainers are really good, too! That was so funny all 4 girls jumping onto your bed right after you tiding it up 😂 the weather has been odd the past week. Although I had a full day at the allotment yesterday, lots of jobs done and the weather was beautifully sunny and warm. Mr Middleton the WW2 garden expert recommended sowing pinches of parsnip seed every 3 inches and pulling every other one as baby parsnips in summer This works quite well. I space the rows about 8 inches apart and sow spinach between them. You get a couple of cuts of baby spinach from that.

I love swiss Chard - my back garden is not very big - my answer to a compact greenhouse for the tomatoes is a 6ft long 5ft high clothes rail with the plastic cover - am awaiting the pork chops/jap blacks and starfighter. Thanks for giving such comprehensive imfo Jessie and listening to all the successes and more importantly "failures" gives all of us "newbies" such hope and optimism. Love pottymouth as well. 🌱🌷🌱
Not long ago I saw a video where the gardener sowed Carrots in paper egg cartons with a good sized hole poked in the bottom. When they were up, he planted the whole thing and the carrots just kept growing down. If it works for carrots (don't know/ haven't tried it yet), it should work for parsnips).
Won’t work for parsnips, but you could use toilet role tubes; but they must be planted out as soon as the parsnips germinate. I chit my parsnips and as they shoot out a root, I carefully sow into prepared planting stations. Works brilliantly. 100% success.
@@bthyme Yes, I had the same problem when I tried it with parsnips. The parsnips grew alright though. But, following years, I prepared the planting stations - 15 to 20cm each way with sifted compost with added sand. Chitted the seats on damp toilet paper until the seeds germinated, the planted the seeds into the prepared stations… two per station. Result - perfect germination and fantastic crop with hardly any forking. The only thing I use toilet tubes for now is cucumbers. Cut to length to suit a 75cm pot filled with compost with the tube placed centrally, seeds sown on their edge. I water outside the tube, thus preventing the stem of the cucumber getting wet and rotting. A regular occurrence before adopting this method. Happy gardening.
Hi Jessie , its going to be the year of the slug . Due to the warmish winter the slugs have thrived . In fact the small slugs have had a field day with my Daffodils , they have eaten the yellow flower trumpets
Jessie I did not intend to be spiteful but as an observation that we have had a fairly mild winter . I expect the small slugs which live in the grass where its been nice and comfy for them

Hi Jess it’s all looking great. I planted my broad beans straight into ground this time just to see how they would grow so still waiting for them to emerge. I grew alderman pea from seed and they were as big as your broad beans so they all in ground. I put fleece over till they get roots down so wind doesn’t bash them about. Also planted my early potatoes half rocket half swift. In a couple of weeks will plant Charlotte second earlies then a week or so after the maincrop Picasso. Got some multisown beetroot to go in any time now and sow my parsnips I also harvested the last year parsnips to make way for early spuds. Gotta get ready to get onions plants in. We are all doing things more or less the same time but slightly different. I never thin my parsnips or carrots. They all grow you just get smaller ones and bigger ones. You do so well with all your pests you have. Anyway see you next week🙋🏻♀️
Aaah…blessed root trainers…can’t live without them… but still using my ancient ones…not smart new ones😀. I left my broad beans in doors too long as well… so cut off the tops to eat on top of soup before planting out… seem to be recovering well😀Jinxy
Hey Jessie, Wow the broccoli looked so nice. I never get much from broccoli and cauliflower in my garden. Now I have been growing a F-1 Broccolini with great success the past couple years so I am only growing the one variety and will look to store a years worth this year. I bought several of those upgraded Rootrainers also. I think 4-5 and I have six of the old ones so I started many seeds about 30 days early to see if this makes them bigger and stronger on the day I transplant them out. I did fill one of each with okra plants as I expect a giant harvest of okra this year. Despite your words I know you loved seeing the chickens out and about even in the garden bed. It must be a thing in the UK about the parsnips. I do not know anyone that eats them over here. Since we do not eat them and do not grow them it leaves me more time to battle the other items I grow. Hi Jess I have had fails with sweet peas due to mildew until i made myself a couple of olla's. I used 9" cheap terracotta as recommended on you tube channels. you can get pot saucers to use as lids to stop evaporation. Living in coastal Norfolk the soil is very sandy, water run away quickly but using these last year really worked! No powdery mildew & lots of flowers to enjoy. Even in the blistering sun. Impressive roots on your broad beans hope they do well. Love your channel
Aw that was lovely but yes - I'd given myself the day off as it was chucking it down and now I feel so guilty! Love the broad bean set up - I really need to try and get one in place this year as I usually wait until they all flop and rush around tangling myself up in bamboo canes and string ... And as for the chickens - gorgeous!

My excess parsnips were dug up last month, prepped and very lightly roasted. Cooled and frozen on a sheet for almost instant roast parnips over the next few months.
Jessie, just to point out that when planting in a raised bed, you don’t need to space your rows so far apart as you don’t need to walk down the rows to weed, etc. I plant into preprepared stations 15 to 20cm each way.
It's all coming together on your plot well done. Our site has had to call in pest control due the ridiculous number of rats on site. Hopefully they will go away soon so I can carry on planting. Take care 🥔🍷🐔
Have you ever tried beer in trays to get rid of slugs ? I trued it last year it worked where I had lettuces and cabbage. Although my growing space is smaller. Nematodes work great to x

It may be a long video but oh yes, crammed full of goodies not (slugs) although here where we live in Cambridgeshire by the great river Ouse, we actually have wild ducks walking around the garden. Just ordered my nematodes today. But I am determined to plant more in containers this year. We have lots of tree roots as well as slugs also snails on our fruit trees. Ooh such a slog seeking them out. Love your hat by the way 😊WCL
Only a gardener would covet their harvest which non gardeners would think…weird. The first strawberry, tomato, cucumber, etc. nothing like it. All that hard work paid off! Even if it’s only one. Yeah.😊. Transplanted tomatoes (only three this year) today, overcast cause a few days from now it starts to warm up.🎉

Parsnips…I sow my seed an inch apart…by the time they,ve been ravaged by everything they are thinned out to the right distance…you obviously are more successful with germination😀Jinxy
when they have taken into the ground if you cut the top two thirds off the beans...then they will all grow back at least two new shoots from the base and be very sturdy plants- this doesn't affect the yield either
I have chopped the tops off the first lot of beans because they had all started their bottom sprouts. I think i'm just hoping these long ones will toughen up :D
cool i must have missed you doing that ! you have tied them secure so i'm sure they will do you good and give plenty of beans ....i always plant mine direct as i find they always go leggy if i sow in pots ....... also when planting direct i quickly soak them in paraffin just prior to planting as this is a great deterrent for mouse attacks@@JessieatPlot37
Sweet pea tip?? In New Zealand I plant sweet peas on st patricks day March 17 (early autumn) they get a chance to establish before winter and take off early spring and start to flower by november - maybe worth a try
I'm with you on the crown prince size. I grew 6 huge ones last year from 3 plants (biggest was 6kg). I gave 3 away and we've got through 2. Christmas with family is helpful for getting through gigantic squash. But I've still got a huge one left and there's only 3 of us at home and one person won't eat squash. So I keep looking at that final crown prince and wondering when I'm going to slice it and cook it. So this year I'm only going to grow one or two crown prince and have a go at Uchiki Kuri and I also have some Table King and Jack Be Little to try. I've tried several times to grow 'Honey Bear' which I think looks nice but I've never had any success. Someone needs to dwarfify the Crown Prince.
Exactly that, delicious but too big! A bantam crown prince would be perfect :D I really like the Ichiku Kuri both size and taste but my plot neighbour really doesn't like the flavour so it splits the crowd!
@@JessieatPlot37Actually just thinking - I grew some Crown prince at home and some at my new allotment. The allotment ones were far bigger. 5-6 kg vs 3kg (which was still a bit too big). I think the soil at home isn't as good. So maybe it's worth trying to limit the crown prince size by putting the plants in bad soil, not adding compost/feed, and maybe limiting space somehow. Perhaps planting two plants close together might work. Obviously they'd be competing for water though too which might be an issue. I'm you do this for other stuff like salads or beetroot like Rocket right? Plant close or multi-sow for smaller leaves/roots. So might work for squash too.

Hi Graham, i've got much quicker at it! It still makes things slower but its almost second nature now. Sifting the camera about without even knowing i'm doing it hahaha! Editing takes up the most time though, thats where most of my time goes!

Butternut as they don’t always grow big Jack be little ichikuri harlequin acorn little gem baby boo and honey boat all good small squash to grow and will climb up an arch.
Any reason you don't use organic rated slug pellets? The ones that are based on an iron compound. I use these and have very little problem with slugs and they are supposed to not harm wildlife, we have some hedge pigs and they don't seem to be effected by them.
I have been known to use them in extreme circumstances! But i've read so much contradictory info about their effect on worms, centipedes and frogs/toads (mainly from the addition of EDTA) that i tend to steer clear. Sadly we don't have any Hedgepigs around our way because of the badgers!
I wonder if like me you will have a go at roasting double skinned broad beans and adding cayenne powder and mixing them in a good Bombay mix? So scrumpy. I found roasted fava beans yo do this but thought I'd try my own beans.
i saved carrot seed last year but found it tricky separating seed from chaff.they werent heirloom anyway.just an experiment.they only flower after the 2nd year
My husband asked me, if you sorted out your rat problem? Did the smoke from last week work? About carrots and parsnips, in Norway it is a thing to sow them in milk cartoons. That way you can start them off before you transfer them into the soil. I tried that with carrots last year and it went ok (I sowed the carrots to late, so they didn’t got any bigger than baby carrots) and I will definitely start them off in cartons this year as well. Because if I sow them directly into the soil the slugs take them 🤯
Oh now this milk carton idea sounds good…….done like peas in guttering? Lay carton on side, sow, wait for goodish growth 5cms, cut off bottom of carton and slide into trench? That sort of idea? Anything to deny the slugs a meal.
@@kathrynhobbs8874no not quite like peas You cut of the top of the cartoons and make drainage holes at the bottom. Put the soil in, and sow your seeds at the top. Let the carrots grow until the slugs can eat them up. Then you cut away the bottom and along one side, and place the whole thing in the soil where you want them. You can leave the cartons or gently move it away. If you look at Maria Berg Hestad video “så gulrot i melkekartong» you can watch her videos. She talks Norwegian but I think you get the idea just by looking at it

Try spreading dried egg shells broken up all around each plant to keep slugs away, it helps somewhat

When preparing parsnips to eat, cut out the middle and use the rest as the middle can be bitter. Happy eating!

Grow buttercup squash they are the nicest tasting we have found and not very big at all. Delicious roasted into wedges. Very sweet and nutty x

Jessie, just to point out that when planting in a raised bed, you don’t need to space your rows so far apart as you don’t need to walk down the rows to weed, etc. I plant into preprepared stations 15 to 20cm each way.
Suggest Sweet Dumpling squash- delicious so dweet and so full of flavour.

Have you ever tried beer in trays to get rid of slugs ? I trued it last year it worked where I had lettuces and cabbage. Although my growing space is smaller. Nematodes work great to x

It may be a long video but oh yes, crammed full of goodies not (slugs) although here where we live in Cambridgeshire by the great river Ouse, we actually have wild ducks walking around the garden. Just ordered my nematodes today. But I am determined to plant more in containers this year. We have lots of tree roots as well as slugs also snails on our fruit trees. Ooh such a slog seeking them out. Love your hat by the way 😊WCL
Only a gardener would covet their harvest which non gardeners would think…weird. The first strawberry, tomato, cucumber, etc. nothing like it. All that hard work paid off! Even if it’s only one. Yeah.😊. Transplanted tomatoes (only three this year) today, overcast cause a few days from now it starts to warm up.🎉

Hi Jess. Couple of parsnip recipe thoughts. Have you tried parsnip and apple soup - it does tone down the parsnip flavour. Also parsnip and celeriac bake has become a go-to for us.

Parsnips…I sow my seed an inch apart…by the time they,ve been ravaged by everything they are thinned out to the right distance…you obviously are more successful with germination😀Jinxy

when they have taken into the ground if you cut the top two thirds off the beans...then they will all grow back at least two new shoots from the base and be very sturdy plants- this doesn't affect the yield either
I have chopped the tops off the first lot of beans because they had all started their bottom sprouts. I think i'm just hoping these long ones will toughen up :D
cool i must have missed you doing that ! you have tied them secure so i'm sure they will do you good and give plenty of beans ....i always plant mine direct as i find they always go leggy if i sow in pots ....... also when planting direct i quickly soak them in paraffin just prior to planting as this is a great deterrent for mouse attacks@@JessieatPlot37

Sweet pea tip?? In New Zealand I plant sweet peas on st patricks day March 17 (early autumn) they get a chance to establish before winter and take off early spring and start to flower by november - maybe worth a try
I tried this once! but it happened to be a year with a dreadful spring and they all rotted off! I might give it another go this autumn though!
I'm with you on the crown prince size. I grew 6 huge ones last year from 3 plants (biggest was 6kg). I gave 3 away and we've got through 2. Christmas with family is helpful for getting through gigantic squash. But I've still got a huge one left and there's only 3 of us at home and one person won't eat squash. So I keep looking at that final crown prince and wondering when I'm going to slice it and cook it.
So this year I'm only going to grow one or two crown prince and have a go at Uchiki Kuri and I also have some Table King and Jack Be Little to try.
I've tried several times to grow 'Honey Bear' which I think looks nice but I've never had any success.
Someone needs to dwarfify the Crown Prince.
Exactly that, delicious but too big! A bantam crown prince would be perfect :D
I really like the Ichiku Kuri both size and taste but my plot neighbour really doesn't like the flavour so it splits the crowd!
@@JessieatPlot37Actually just thinking - I grew some Crown prince at home and some at my new allotment. The allotment ones were far bigger. 5-6 kg vs 3kg (which was still a bit too big). I think the soil at home isn't as good. So maybe it's worth trying to limit the crown prince size by putting the plants in bad soil, not adding compost/feed, and maybe limiting space somehow. Perhaps planting two plants close together might work. Obviously they'd be competing for water though too which might be an issue.
I'm you do this for other stuff like salads or beetroot like Rocket right? Plant close or multi-sow for smaller leaves/roots. So might work for squash too.

Hi Graham, i've got much quicker at it! It still makes things slower but its almost second nature now. Sifting the camera about without even knowing i'm doing it hahaha! Editing takes up the most time though, thats where most of my time goes!

Butternut as they don’t always grow big Jack be little ichikuri harlequin acorn little gem baby boo and honey boat all good small squash to grow and will climb up an arch.
Any reason you don't use organic rated slug pellets? The ones that are based on an iron compound. I use these and have very little problem with slugs and they are supposed to not harm wildlife, we have some hedge pigs and they don't seem to be effected by them.
I have been known to use them in extreme circumstances! But i've read so much contradictory info about their effect on worms, centipedes and frogs/toads (mainly from the addition of EDTA) that i tend to steer clear. Sadly we don't have any Hedgepigs around our way because of the badgers!
I wonder if like me you will have a go at roasting double skinned broad beans and adding cayenne powder and mixing them in a good Bombay mix? So scrumpy. I found roasted fava beans yo do this but thought I'd try my own beans.

Last frost date here is 21st of march, i believe. Not sure about the first! i will go have a look.

i saved carrot seed last year but found it tricky separating seed from chaff.they werent heirloom anyway.just an experiment.they only flower after the 2nd year

About carrots and parsnips, in Norway it is a thing to sow them in milk cartoons. That way you can start them off before you transfer them into the soil. I tried that with carrots last year and it went ok (I sowed the carrots to late, so they didn’t got any bigger than baby carrots) and I will definitely start them off in cartons this year as well. Because if I sow them directly into the soil the slugs take them 🤯
Oh now this milk carton idea sounds good…….done like peas in guttering? Lay carton on side, sow, wait for goodish growth 5cms, cut off bottom of carton and slide into trench? That sort of idea? Anything to deny the slugs a meal.

You cut of the top of the cartoons and make drainage holes at the bottom. Put the soil in, and sow your seeds at the top.
Let the carrots grow until the slugs can eat them up. Then you cut away the bottom and along one side, and place the whole thing in the soil where you want them. You can leave the cartons or gently move it away.
If you look at Maria Berg Hestad video “så gulrot i melkekartong» you can watch her videos. She talks Norwegian but I think you get the idea just by looking at it
I'm not sure about starting carrots isn't it to earlier 😕. Do U only eat veg from your plot or do U buy veg as well?
Its fine here, the soil is warm and besides these are to start indoors.
