Just for you to know for tge future Emma, first and second earlies are determinate potatoes and main crop are indeterminate potatoes and only indeterminate need hilling up. Saves you all that extra work fir later in the year with the spuds you've planted.
That's awesome how people can find different ways and rules how to grow the same plant. My family growing their own vegetables for whole their life, and my grandparents as well and we don't do any this chipping or anything. Very simply We just put those patatoes in soil, cover them with lots of soil, we make even like a hill over the top of soil. So we can see where is rows of patatoes and they not coming up so easily. And never ever had any problems... As well what we do to make more seed - we Cut up a bit bigger patatoes in half or 3 parts, as long as there 1-2 marks where the stemps gonna come out from is fine. Those little spots we call patatoes "eyes"😅
Emma Farmer's here in the US plant potatoes on Good Friday, March 29th. We go thru what we call "little Winters. It gets colder when Redbuds ,Dogwoods and blackberries bloom. There are a few little winters. It also gets cold around the 10th of May. It's usually safest here to plant after the 10th of May but it can still frost.
Hi Emma, who cares indeterminate, determinate. There’s an old saying „the proof is in the pudding (doing) and your definitely doing it . If it feels right then it is. Carry on chucking them in. You motivate me and cheer me up at the Same time. Greetings from rainy N. Germany 🥰
Just for the spuds, it's only indeterminate that need earthing up, mostly main crop. Whilst keeping them buried is good, it's also because your indeterminate can grow spuds higher up the steams at multiple levels. So the more you earth them up, the more spuds you can get. With earlies they tend to be determinate, so they only grow spuds around the original spud at the same level so earthing up is not needed Of course some exceptions, but just check for determinate or indeterminate
Planting some borage back along the end where you have piled the sticks would be good too. Since they become large plants, they would disguise the sticks and provide a lovely background for your cosmos and bachelor buttons (was that what you planned for there?).
You should train Einstein to feed off your hand, easy to do with patience ✋🐦. Put some meal worms in the palm of your hand near the Bird feeder and look the other way, bit by bit he will get the confidence to come closer and feed from your hand, it is very rewarding when this happens 😀😁.
Hi Emma I hope you are well . I just wanted to let you know that I would pur a good amount of Shultz or hay, or Straw over the covered potatoes not just for slugs but for warmth . You can also put your potatoes in pots or even Shopping bags you just put holes in the bottom of a shopping bag add another bag inside and put holes in that bag. fill with compost pitatoes wack them in 3 small at the bottom of baggs add fertiliser or feed top compost to the top you can add Shuluts Hay or straw and a tag to let you know what your planting and thats it. Emma You WONT get Poison from Shults straw or hay I Use them for all my veg and fruit trees and its Great for feed I ALWAYS use Richard Jackson Root Booster And to feed them Flower Power you get a bumper crop with strong healthy roots and nutrients with the feed you can get it from either Richard Jackson Direct or on QVC Shopping Channel. I hope this helps Sivia Rose if you need any help drop me a line xxxxx
I think snails hide in watering cans in the hope they will land on some plants they can eat that are probably under cover, I’m not sure if they have the ability to think this through, they’ve never told me x
Excellent work, Emma. I planted my first early potatoes today using a bulb planter to get them nice and deep in the ground. I’ve covered the area in a thick straw mulch. Job done.
Firsr day of spring and first day on my new family allotment that looks over a castle feel very blessed! Thank you for the content Emma red rooster potatoes going im asap once plot is planned and prepared next week.
My 1st earlies are in as of yesterday, I grow them in those canvas potato planters. I will leave them in my greenhouse for a few weeks and then move them out. I always have snails in my watering cans, I agree with you on snails 😂
I bought my Barbers from Vinted - still had a ticket on - for £30! Putting my 1st earlies in at the weekend. They are going in pots, 2nd earlies and mains going in beds early April - love seeing Einstein ❤️
I found out recently that you get determinate and indeterminate potatoes, so that some plants grow tubers sideways and others grow upwards as the plant grows.
Did you know each chit you can cut and make sure the sides that you cut dry over and that could have been 3 plants only found that out on another channel I watch as well x Potatoes in dwarf broad beans runner beans peas carrots beetroot parsnips onions kale cucumbers tomatoes peppers chilly and lots more love gardening xx
Hi Emma traditionally we aim to plant First early around ST Patricks day. Easy to remember with association of Ireland and Potatoes. Also as mentioned below not such a problem with first earlies of light exposure however useful to earth up when expecting a frost to protect leaves.
Hi Emma new subscriber here, I will be planting my chitted potatoes this weekend (a bit risky as I have recently moved to Cumbria from Essex) and it's definitely colder here. I am putting mine in a raised bed, I will keep some fleece handy in case the tops come up and frost is forecast. Loving your mantra "just bung it in"!!
Hi emma great video again hope you get good crop of spuds after all your hard work ,like another viewer said why dont you try to feed the robin from your hand ,that would be superb if you could manage it take care best wishes .
Planted so many new potatoes, here in New Zealand, am on the last row started harvesting late November 1.4 metre rows, just two of us, plus occasionally and extra 5 adults e.g Christmas. Main crop maybe by Easter. Grew Jersey Brennes and Swift, main Crop Agria. Grew Rocket 2022, life to change varieties, always plant first week of September our last frost is not until October, but the self sown come through when the soil is warm enough, we can have no frosts for 5 weeks then get a serious one. This Autumn we have already had cucumber killing one, last year we didn't get a serious frost until May. A serious frost kills a certain weed in my garden that germination can be every day!!!
Leaving my pots a bit longer, but the good news my broad Beans are finally starting to grow, on the downside the slugs have eaten my French marigold seedlings 😵💫
I put my potatoes in on Sunday, St Patricks day. I'm daring to grow three crops this year: first earlies; Duke of York, second earlies; British Queens and main crop; King Edwards. I've only ever grown trusty Maris Piper and British Queens before so i'm a bit nervous to try something new! I do know if i have any spare potato seeds i put them in a big bucket or container to grow. When i was a kid i remember grown them in a tea-chest/moving house box in my mums back yard.
I did a super early bag of Rocket (in my pvc greenhouse) and already foliage is coming up so topped up with more compost today 😍 Will be getting the rest of my Rockets out next week I think. How many seeds of Borage did you sow on each spot? I can’t wait to have Borage this year 🐝
I'm a bit worried to put my spuds out. They will go into pots and then outside in buckets in late April. We just plated leggy broad beans and covered them with 5 liter water bottles but still worry they won't survive here in Wales. Emma, didn't you sow masses of borage last year...it worried me then, it is really invasive...lol. It will look gorgeous though.

Emma you shouldn’t water the potatoes until the shoot through the soil they can rot if too wet.😊

Look at joules wellies, they do have short ones and nice designs/colours 😊

Every year I find snails in the spouts of my watering cans 🧑🌾🚿
Looking amazing already!

How many seeds of Borage did you sow on each spot? I can’t wait to have Borage this year 🐝
Emma put my 1st early's in start of feb in pots
Earthing up around the foliage will encourage more tubers but don’t cover them completely. You could grow those extra ones in containers
Only need to hill up main crop (indeterminate) potatoes. No need to keep mounding up determinate potatoes coz the tubers only grow at one level.
I bought some ankle wellies from sports direct very reasonably priced
Thank you !
Do you have B&M in London? They are great for gardening bargains 😊
Spuds, I love em
❤
See Tony O'Neil - Simplify Gardening : the Potato Expert
- no need to earth up first earlies Emma - just bury them😂❤
Emma I love your videos I get my allotment plot on Friday I’m so excited. Do you or any of your followers have any advice for me?
Super Good work te moostuin patatoes planting thans te video Top week ❤🫛👍🧤🥔🌷🪻☕️🌱
Try b&m for boots
Love it ! You rebel

Are you saying, you transplant potatoes?
@seant.r3241 yes, from small pots to buckets.
I suggest that you get some steel toed wellies. Save Emma's toesies. hugs
Yey!! POTATOES ❤❤
😍🌿🌧️✨
Page one of the garden manual says "Thou shall plant thy early potatoes on St Patrick's day or burn forever in hell" .
Emma , you definitely need some new boots. How can I help you?
Robins don't eat seeds only bugs
The robins in my garden eat seeds and fruit as well as bugs
mostly and that's all they'll take to their chicks though we have robins come to our bird feeder eating the fat balls so they are a bit omnivorous
Poor trainers 😢😅
